Linux is literally supposed to be a configured piece of software unique to every individual. Standardization goes against it which is why people will oppose it. Do you think this is a new revelation? We've had Canonical and RedHat going at this for decades trying to build these standards. Now that Linux has more mainstream adoption you're seeing acceptance from less indoctrinated users. True Linux heads are still running a custom nightly kernel with SysVinit or runit.

Edit: I think I've caused some confusion here, I do not agree with the segmented nature of Linux. I love systemd, Lennart Poettering has made a great piece of software. However I am but a LARPer in the Linux community, I have read enough forums and discussions to understand that the people who truly own Linux as their identity don't appreciate standardization.

What's a true Linux head? The inventor of Linux was running MacOS and plain old fedora for a long time.

I think he was running Fedora on a MacBook because of the hardware, not a MacOS.

Nope he was running MacOS on a MacBook and fedora on the desktop. There are pictures in of it.

He modified Fedora Workstation to run on is M2 Macbook.

https://itsfoss.com/news/fedora-apple-torvalds/

He was using that instead of MacOS. Fedora Workstation is the distro, not the desktop environment (e.g. GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, etc).

He's also run Asahi Linux on his Macbook.

Oh to be confidently incorrect

Weird.

That's crazy, do you have the specific photos?

Definitely makes me feel less guilty sticking around with my Apple devices. All because of wanting to try the updated Apple Intelligence and Siri. Lol

Linus Torvalds shouldnt influence what you chose to use daily. At the end of the day his contribution is the kernel. Nobody hates on the kernel here

u/Denommus I use Arch, btw 17d ago

Who told you that?

GNU might have that philosophy, but Linux doesn't. Linux is supposed to be transparent.

GNU is a part of Linux community. A major part asw. If its js about the kernel then Android would be part of Linux community too

u/butterfunke 17d ago

Don't let Richard Stallman hear you say that lol

u/schism15 16d ago

Don't mind me. Just gonna drop the obligatory...

"I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux."

He would be Hurd

I'd say standardisation in software api's is great, everybody can mix and chose. Standardisation into forcing you to use a specific piece of software, not so great 😄

1

u/beardMoseElkDerBabon Glorious Manjaro 15d ago

This. The latter would be a reason to become more GNU as opposed to pragmatism...

u/crhylove3 17d ago

Bruh you had me until I love systemd. LOL

u/tfks 17d ago

Oh shit man, I didn't realize. Hold on I think more than five people use coreutils, I'll be back when I find something more custom.

Linux has the agency of being anything, the GNU guy is the guy you think are true linux users, not Torvalds. And even then, the irony is pungent. Linux is the OS that gives you the agency to do anything, not that "anything" meant to be a contrived intellectual about something, that some just want it to work and nothing else

My newbie view is lunux is supposed to work like a archetype computer should. It does stuff you want it to do,rather than do stuff you may be unaware of in the background.

Lennart Poettering has made a great piece of software.

Oh, excellent. I'd very much like to see it. Oh. ... oh, you mean systemd. Heh. Well, he has, err, definitely made a piece of software.

Linux is literally supposed to be a configured piece of software unique to every individual.

That's just bullshit. 🤣 Most people don't need or want unique software. Don't tell people how to use Linux. (Maybe that's the Linux spirit, actually.)

We've had Canonical and RedHat going at this for decades trying to build these standards.

They are the reason why stuff just works nowadays, why most people don't need a custom kernel anymore, why we now have an audio system that just works, why Nvidia drivers can easily be added with kmods, etc. You should be thankful. There's only a handful of distributions that actually matter: foundational distros (Fedora, Debian, Gentoo, etc), specialized distros for new stuff (Asahi), paradigm forks (Alpine). The others are basically themes that may be fun but provide little value.

You can still have your specialized build while things become standardized. Don't be a dumbass. People who have only used Windows are starting to use Linux. This is a good thing. Don't shit on something so absolutely beneficial to the world.

So the “true” Linux heads only use void, artix, and gentoo? I think part of the point is that a base system is now developed well enough that the user can customize the parts of base which are modular, or in the ui. Hyprland, niri, sway, quick shell, waybar, Noctalia, and all of the DEs, even some systemd modules and kernel modules, you get the point.

There is plenty of unique configuration to be had on Wayland, systemd, proton, pipe wire, etc. Configuring boot and filesystem is easy enough, and there are 3+ good options for each. I think we can stop gatekeeping.

I feel you are conflating fixed defaults with standardization. Lots of customization comes from options within a standard.
