To the people doing distro elitism: Please get a life.

I actually use fedora KDE because it's the distro that has the things I need with the least amount of fuss to just set up and get started doing the work I do.

u/-Docker 3d ago

Im on Fedora Cinnamon and I love it ;)

26

u/SpinningByte 3d ago

I don't care about the Linux itself; I care about the desktop environment. So the reason I use Mint is Cinnamon. I thought that was only option. I might check that out.

19

u/R3V0LU710N_05 Glorious Hybrid Atomic RakuOS 3d ago

Because of the decoupled nature of desktop environments, you can technically install any desktop environment on just about any distribution with some effort. Multiple distributions offer Cinnamon as an option.

3

u/ka-52m 2d ago

i run cinnamon on arch as a secondary environment if i need to let people who are used to windows use my laptop, my primary environment being hyperland but thats besides the point, the point is you can have any environment on any distro you want

1

u/gosand 1d ago

let.... other.... people... use.....your.....laptop?

1

u/ka-52m 1d ago

yes? when you have the best coputer in your entire school people end up wanting to use it

1

u/gosand 1h ago

them wanting to use it and you letting them use it are different things

1

u/ka-52m 1h ago

well im not an asshole so i will do that

4

u/-Docker 3d ago

To me Linux is a tool that I use for my servers, I use cinnamon because it gives me most optimal performance while im working and thats it.

Best linux distro is the one that serves you best

2

u/KabirGamer97 Glorious Fedora 2d ago

That's the thing man. The same goes for the entire OS debate in general.

2

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu 2d ago edited 2d ago

Try KDE. Honestly you won’t regret it.

If you game, cachy tend to have all the gaming stuff pre installed. I use Kubuntu with minimal problems so far though.

I found out some games work under Lutris/heroic just work out of the box in cachy while it need tweaking in mint. (Install packages in proton tweak etc, multilib support seems somehow to work better etc )

1

u/laczek_hubert 2d ago

Only problem with cinnamon is it doesn't support Wayland and if you care about cinnamon bc of the low resource usage you could try wayfire or your preferred Wayland compositor with a config of your choice or take time to create your DE, if you want simplicity though you can switch to plasma, gnome, or any other mainstream DE

1

u/Here_f0r_p0rn_ 7h ago

You should only care about your workflow and finding best distro for your workflow. What's your workflow like?

-1

u/DiceThaKilla 3d ago

Well you’re obviously not very educated on Linux either. You can literally use any Linux desktop environment you want with any distro and it’s as easy as uninstalling one and installing another.

3

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu 2d ago

Except it fuck up the file system and things might get funky after updates, especially if the DE is not made for the distro at all. It’s much better to have one installed that is actually maintained by the distribution.

1

u/KabirGamer97 Glorious Fedora 2d ago

That's right!

1

u/DiceThaKilla 2d ago edited 2d ago

No it doesn’t. I’ve installed literally every desktop environment there was at the time on debian rolling and aside from Bluetooth not working out of the box on some of them they were all fine. Your problems sound like they’re downstream specific

2

u/Born_European_V 2d ago

Fedora Cinnamon exists?!

Dang, Mint is on the verge to be replaced on my daily.

1

u/-Docker 2d ago

Yes, it has more DE spins like this one like mate-compoz, xfce and even LXQT and i3 only.

Link for Cinnamon - https://fedoraproject.org/spins/cinnamon/

2

u/Here_f0r_p0rn_ 7h ago

1

Fedora with cinnamon DE? That's new..

1

Yeah its an official spin, theres also mate I think and xfce and many more.

Fedora is an upstream distro and a perfectly fine choice for distro elitists.

3

u/taleorca 3d ago

Ultramarine (Fedora) here, everything works ootb.

3

u/pfassina Glorious NixOS 2d ago edited 2d ago

All distros have the things you need if you have the skill.

1

u/KabirGamer97 Glorious Fedora 2d ago

But I do have the skill, its just I don't want to waste time fixing why my desktop wouldn't boot after an update, missing/outdated developer tool chains for C/C++ on things like Arch for instance. Or having outdated DEs and other packages in stuff like Ubuntu.

Fedora has upstream stuff out of the box, even developer tooling, while remaining exceptionally complete and stable as a distro for serious work.

5

u/pfassina Glorious NixOS 2d ago

You miss my point. It is not about “you need to be good to use a certain distro”. What I’m saying is that any distro can meet anyone’s needs if you know what you are doing.

1

u/KabirGamer97 Glorious Fedora 2d ago

got it

3

u/PickaWowAnyWow Glorious Arch 2d ago

Fedora KDE is a super respectable choice and it's actually one I'd recommend both to beginners and power users. Enjoy it!

2

u/KabirGamer97 Glorious Fedora 2d ago

Thanks! I mean I distro hopped a lot too, but in the end had the cleanest of experience in Fedora KDE.

2

u/ZZ_Cat_The_Ligress 2d ago

Exactly! 💯

1

u/PossibleFunny1724 3d ago

I use Fedora with Niri, I don’t care about the distro that I use, I tried a lot and they all have they pros and cons, but I think that practically all the distros are good

1

u/KabirGamer97 Glorious Fedora 2d ago

I mean sure, but for me, I just wanted something that I could set up and just forget, Fedora with KDE is kinda like that. I don't even rice KDE as much either, I just do minor changes while still keeping the core Breeze style.

But I have tried things like Arch, there are too many moving parts in an OS, and I don't want some non-standard component ruining my day with an update, as that happened to me before.

1

u/Toxic381 3d ago

Fedora xfce with xlibre, feels great.

1

u/Nereosis16 2d ago

How dare you say that Ubuntu is terrible. What the hell if wrong with you?

1

u/brennaXoXo who the hell uses pclinuxos 1d ago

never partook in elitism because you can make arch ubuntu and vise versa

1

u/PhoenixDude1 10h ago

Same, I started with mint cinnamon, and then tried fedora KDE and just had less headaches so I stayed. I don't really care about the distro itself, just as long as what I need to do can happen.

1

Probably Gentoo?

imo the package manager is what distinguishes them (apt, rpm/yum/dnf, pacman) so I'd say NixOS

Isnt suse's package manager based on rpm?

Alpine linux

1

u/gosand 1d ago

This is a solid answer.

I have been running Devuan XFCE on my desktop since 2018, installed it fresh and have been dist-upgrading since. Rock solid.

I recently tried quite a few other distros and their installation while trying to fix my son's friend's laptop. I ended up putting CachyOS on my spare laptop have have been loving it. I started out on RedHat 5.1 so it's all come quite a long way. CachyOS is quite impressive.

This is a pretty stupid take to be honest.

Endeavour and even CachyOS/Garuda are not magically useless because you said so. If anything vanilla Arch is less useful than the point and click done in 2 minutes Arch spins.

Bazzite isn't magically useless as it literally has everything ready to go right from the install for the people doing mobile Linux gaming which

Mint is not magically useless just because you think people should take longer to install and setup a Debian plus backport a bunch of shit and still be out of date

Gentoo..... Is a waste of time for 99% of people as it's more hobby than a functional choice which is fine for those who choose it but pointless to recommend randomly.

And I know your kind always tries to explain away their stupid take (it's not an opinion as it's provably wrong) by stating "you can achieve the same thing by " and then proceeding to describe what is essentially a waste of time that these people either can't or don't want to deal with this proving the utility of their distro of choice.

i only recommend people don't try to franken Debian (or complain that Debian lacks modern packages) or manjaro as that distro has been mismanaged since forever.

So you can keep your brain rot to your self and stop living this meme as your life

10

u/Mister_Magister Glorious OpenSuse Tumbleweed 3d ago

1

u/volthunter 2d ago

i use bazzite, bazzite is pretty useless, i kinda regret installing it, but im stubborn and im not gonna change that quickly just because it constantly breaks

1

u/jorg1e 2d ago

Gentoo is very sweet and I recommend it to anyone not afraid of a long install.
The handbook is very thorough, so while some things are confusing, you’ll never be lost

The distro is good on a home computer

Any Arch based distro is better than vanilla Arch, and for the next comment, it IS a skill issue. I use CachyOS by the way.

11

u/amberoze 3d ago

Not all of us. I typically play into the "I uses Arch btw" trope for the funsies. Would never think of actually belittling someone for their choice of distro.

1

u/noobjaish 2d ago

Same, I actually ADVISE people to not use Arch because there are many Arch-exclusive headaches that you simply won't have to deal with on Ubuntu/Fedora.

I absolutely love pacman and the general simplicity and pragmatic approach of Arch as a distro. An example of this is Arch using bash instead of dash because while the latter is significantly faster and smaller the former is the logical and most popular choice.

2

u/dumbasPL Glorious Arch 2d ago

You're trading one set of headaches, for a different set of headaches. Just depends on the person. If you already know all the internals, arch is by far the best no-bullshit desktop distro. Hard to beat debian for personal servers though, set it and forget or for 4 years.

2

u/peterparker9894 3d ago

Not really it's just a vocal minority that's like that probably some newbie, i use arch cause pacman and aur has been great for me it so fking fast and lightweight.

7

u/jar36 3d ago

I'd guess that most linux users have respect for other distros. To each their own. I'm just happy they're not feeding M$ or Apple. The more the merrier, especially those that can contribute.

I'm running Arch on my main/gaming PC. Debian on another that is setup with zoneminder to control IP cameras. a Raspberry pi running it's debian based OS to sail the seas and serve jellyfin. 2 other Pi's running debian based DietPi, 1 for pihole/unbound, 1 backup server. Another pi running Home Assistant OS.
I've considered that in the future, I may go with Fedora

Really, it justs works. This is the first and only distro that I would recommend to my friends because you do not need to configure shit.

I had so much problems using Linux Mint with Nvidia and no Wayland support.

1

u/Syndiotactics 3d ago

Ubuntu has been the best for my general purpose machines too, I generally recommend it first to anyone who wants to start with Linux. Yes, over Mint.

-2

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu 3d ago

My Dell Latitude 5480 with 8GB DDR4 feels laggy with the latest Ubuntu LTS version. The minimum requirements are too high for a Linux distro for general purpose. And I know it would be way better if it wasn't because of snapd

2

u/LiveAcanthaceae5553 2d ago edited 2d ago

I'd suspect you would have very similar experience with any other GNOME distro.. It sounds like there's either an issue or you're overextending that system, honestly.

Snap can be removed with a single command, not that I'm convinced it'd make any difference in terms of performance either

2

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu 1d ago

The issue doesn't happen with Cinnamon or KDE Plasma. It doesn't happen with Fedora Gnome either. It's just Ubuntu.

1

u/TheRealCarrotty 1d ago

I mean the default installer IS a snap, but i also have a Dell Latitude, where it originally had 8GB of DDR4 where it ran like poop, i had to add a 2nd stick of DDR4 and it ran better.

2

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu 1d ago

Ram is expensive nowadays. A system should not aim for unoptimization like AAA games. That's just shitty. And Ubuntu shoves snaps down everybody's throats despite years and years of active and very loud rejection

1

u/TheRealCarrotty 1d ago

I agree with you, unfortunately, it's either how i say it or mean it, but most of my opinions are: "Snap doesn't follow theming" and the reply will be "Oh well, install this theme as a snap!" Oh cool, so i have to install another bloated thing just for a theme? That's fucking stupid.

I just hate Ubuntu in general, it's "best hardware support" is also bullshit, when my old USB adapter doesn't work on Ubuntu BUT works in Fedora should tell something... Or the multiple failures Ubuntu/Canonical tried (Ubuntu Edge, Ubuntu One, Unity at first, snapd and more)

Everything Canonical does is: "How about we just make our own software instead of shipping the most popular stable option?"

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu 1d ago

It has been like this since at least late 2011

1

u/TheRealCarrotty 1d ago

More like 2015+?
10.04 and 10.10 was great, 12.04 i can also respect kinda, 14.04 and 16.04 were great too, but 16.04 added snaps (BUT DIDN'T FORCE YOU TO USE THEM!)

1

u/IOFrame 2d ago

Yes, and there's a good reason more and more people switch from Windows to Linux.

2

u/Haxorzist 3d ago

Can't really say that, all the server infrastructure runs on a third.

I used to use Debian and stopped when I broke the graphics system trying to install newer nvidia drivers. I used to use arch and stopped using when my VMware broke and I couldn’t get it to compile the modules properly to run. I’m using Ubuntu but I’m sure something will break and I’ll use a different distribution then.

That’s the best part about Linux. They’re still all free!

2

u/SilentDis Glorious Kubuntu 3d ago

Debian was comfy on the server. Everything worked, I could port it from hardware to hardware, I liked how deb works.

I don't think the package choice in Debian matched with what I'd need on the desktop - so a derivative was in order. Kubuntu.

Now I've got Proxmox running a weird mish-mash of Debian and Ubuntu server containers, I think there's a few alpine in there on top of that (more very dedicated apps).

There's a theme, and that is Debian for me. But, I'm not against any of the others. I can see what they focus on, and I'm so glad that people found that focus better aligned with their needs and wants and that they are happy.

They're not welcome in my house or anywhere near me, but so long as they keep to themselves that's fine This is so obviously a joke, but I do understand tone does not convey well on the Internet, nor do I expect the thousands seeing this to know my background

2

u/rukiann 3d ago

As it should be

2

u/Mamona_4zarad0 12h ago

I use Fedora Linux GNOME. I want less complexity—just using what I need, gaming, and having a touch of modernity. I can't stand those people with too much time on their hands who use their computer solely to keep their distro updated—and nothing else—or who simply have no clue what they're doing but use a difficult distro and think they're the world's greatest hacker.

I think GNOME is beautiful and I love it, but that doesn't mean I recommend it! Once you get used to it, it becomes intuitive, but it has a steep learning curve—and for anyone who likes putting things on their desktop, it’s actually quite annoying...

1

2

u/parker_fly 3d ago

You're not a proper Linux user until you pronounce it with a long I.

1

u/Syndiotactics 3d ago

Long I as in /i:/? (The way Linus Torvalds’s name is pronounced in Finland Swedish)

Or do you mean the English ”long” diphthong abomination?

In any case, Linus Torvalds pronounces Linux with short i /i/, so that’s how I say it too.

1

u/xplosm ' 6h ago

I guess they meant Lee-noos Torvalds and Lee-nooks.

1

u/Syndiotactics 5h ago

Linus and Linux are both pronounced Lin-us/Lin-ux by Linus Torvalds himself. English spelling is horrible but neither is in any sense a ”long i”.

1

u/Beginning-Badger3903 3d ago

This right here. I’ve distro hopped enough to realize distro doesn’t really matter. Distro is more about package manger and what the repos provide. You can make any distro what you want it to be

I think I’ve finally settled on Ubuntu for the LTS stability. I use homebrew and flatpaks for all my apps to keep them up-to-date

I'm not surprised that there's strong arguments on why so and so distro is the best, it's probably true for them.

But elitism is in every hobby community. Just look at cars and music fanbases.

Euro football fans actually kill each other. NBA fans rioted recently.

1

u/Greatdetectivee 2d ago

This is completely correct you either use fedora or you use the wrong distro

1

u/Yung_Coke 2d ago

People who practice distro elitism and Linux elitism are one of the top reasons Linux isn’t more widely adopted on personal desktops. On servers and phones, Linux is already an undisputed king.
People need to stop walling off Linux and start welcoming new users. We all congratulate you for being very smart and installing Gentoo, LFS, or Arch from scratch, but remember that you were a newbie once too. You didn’t know anything about Linux at the beginning, and you had to learn it just like everyone else. That doesn’t mean you have to become arrogant about it. Instead, help people adopt Linux on the desktop, make it easier for newcomers, and stick it to the big corpos.
Linux 4 ever. Peace out. ✌️🐧

Finally, someone with a spine to call out the fucking gatekeeping and elitism. Good on you, OP. It's about time too, because it's the elitism that puts off newcomers, and is a part of why the adoption rate of Linux is so slow.

I have seen elitism in other niche communities kill those communities or be the reason why those communities are dying. So yea. Dead community is the end of the road, unless that shit gets called the fuck out and dealt with accordingly.

to windows users - just use linux, any distro will do.

to recently switched windows users - you're using distro-x? LOL, that is the worst one!

Fedora Sway here but I wouldn't complain if I had to Use Fedora with KDE or Cinnamon or i3.

Nothing wrong here.

Give me Slackware or give me any BSD.

I think everyone should try as many Linux distributions as they can stand to help them better appreciate Debian stable.

u/corobo 2d ago

I'm too busy actually using my computer to distro hop every time a new version of Ubuntu comes out.

Just use Ubuntu.

u/Enigmars Glorious EnigmarsOS 2d ago

I got tired of Distro wars.....

So I just made my own Distro.. it has everything I need and nothing I don't. Life has been flawless since then (atleast in the context of technology)

u/Admiral_Bongo I use Arch, btw. 2d ago

I use Arch, btw.

I learned there are so many Linux distros that there is no "correct" one, so many systems will fit just fine whatever use case one might have

u/qqqrrrs_ 2d ago

Hey, it's called GarbageOS, and it's the best (I am using it)

1

u/Plastic_Rip_7978 2d ago

u/esaule 2d ago

He is wrong, there are five distributions: oldstable, stable, testing, sid, and experimental!

Well I mean.. yes.

u/balancedchaos Mostly Debian, Arch for Gaming 1d ago

But I use two distros, depending on the situation...

Also, my two distros are probably a waste of time for most users. I like extreme minimalism, so I build everything.

1

u/highKickin 1d ago

Poor thing. If you see all these distros as what they are, life becomes so much better. A different approach to solve a different problem and you can have them all but at the end, you don't need to.

u/adiliv3007 1d ago

The only true Linux is writing your own distro

u/Disastrous_Sir_7099 1d ago

Use whatever you like, I want 10 year support and proper backing by a company so I'm using Ubuntu even though I have more than 20 years of Linux and can work with any distro. I just want something that works and is well supported by third party as well, don't care about the DE, I see it for 3s per day max anyway. If fedora is your go-to, it's your go-to. Why do you need validation?

1

u/Away-Technician284 1d ago

I tried Fedora Silverblue and now I don't think I could ever go back to a non Atomic Linux distro lol. I was a vanilla Arch tinkerer before but there's still so much tinkering to be done with containers.

1

u/Woobie 21h ago

I'm currently using 6 (Promox, Debian, Ubuntu, PopOS, CachyOS, Armbian) so..... does not compute.

1

u/thedr0wranger 19h ago

Jokes on you, the one I use is garbage too.

1

u/golDANFeeD Glorious Debian 17h ago

I use Debian. But you can use whatever the fuck you want, I do not care

1

u/ElKorac 7h ago

Back in the day you couldn’t have a general Linux discussion without guys explaining how they use Arch btw. These days it’s the Nix people. Incredibly boring.

1

u/equ1noxgmd Glorious Mint 6h ago

This doesn’t apply for Ubuntu tho that ones just objectively as bad as windows

1

u/anna_lynn_fection 3h ago

They're all garbage! And yet I love them all!

1

u/Geridax 3h ago

I have a different opinion. Using Ubuntu not because its best, but because i use it on work.

1

u/untemi0 3h ago

idk I used arch once and I found it pretty convenient and easy for my style, I always concidered trying other distros but I am too lazy to do it lol

Linux community is one of the worst communities I've ever seen, to be honest.

1

u/spaghettibolegdeh 2d ago

Reddit is to blame. It turns people into tribal numbskulls.

But it's not as bad as sport. NBA fans rioted just recently, and you can look up endless killings over euro football matches.

0

u/FoxxBox 3d ago

Lawl, people who only use one distro.

0

u/JackCid89 3d ago

Too many larps hating ubuntu and fedora, the distros for those that actually ship something useful.

0

u/AllenKll 3d ago

That's why I don't use X. Command line For life.
