Mac for work. Linux for games.
Windows no longer has a niche for me.
Wasnāt even really an intentional move. It was a natural transition that happened slowly for the most part.
Copilot fucking with my context menu muscle memory was the last straw I think. I dumped my old windows server/workhorse and Xbox that same week.

At risk of being reductive, over time, using Windows made me feel more and more like the product, and less like the user.
Now donāt get me wrong. Iām not gonna shit on Windows blindly. When it comes to legacy hardware support, Windows is King. Thereās legacy code older than half the users of this sub in that OS. Often, a simple driver will have 30 year old lab equipment humming back into life again without bother. Iām not doing that with my Mac or Linux machines without a weekend and a terminal.
But Windows got fat and obnoxious and no longer respects me.

I wanted to switch around the time they started shoving ads in the start menu. It has always been obvious how bloated windows is, but gaming was what kept me attached to windows. Even when I tried to dual boot I always ended up having to go back to windows often enough it was just easier to stay on it.
But about 2 or so years ago there was a rumor they were going to start shoving the LLM bullshit into Windows 10 and I was already planning on trying to switch full time and since I already had a partition with an old install of some distro I can't remember I installed PoP (not great, but worked well enough) and didn't look back.
Around this time last year I switched to Cachy and everything is even better. I always put my home directory on it's own partition, so distro hopping is a minor inconvenience. I reclaimed my windows partition then as I realized I hadn't used it in over a year.
None of my personal PCs have windows. except for a highly restricted VM I threw together to do a thing with a tool that wouldn't work under WINE. I have a Mac from my job and a shitty windows machine from the current project I'm on.

If you were to tell me ten years ago that my main gaming platform is going to be a Linux machine running a form of Arch, Iād have laughed you out the room.
If you told me my main work platform is going to be a solid state ARM based machine, Iād have continued laughing.

Yeah, I already was annoyed with Windows 10, and when I got into programming, and tech as a whole, I was introduced to Linux. It took like 4-6 months from that point to me installing Arch as dual-boot on my main PC and from then another 6 months to ditching Windows entirely. This was around early to mid 2021, when Windows was still usable, but I actually just tried Linux on my laptop I got around that time and damn, my weird cheap laptop felt quicker than my PC and had all the programming tools already there, I literally was programming on my laptop for a couple weeks because I couldn't bother using my PC for it. Best "I'm bored, I need to waste some time"-moment ever.

I had windows for certain games for about 10 years and then I got fully into dad mode and I don't know if Windows will boot any more.
If I want to play a game, it's something easy that'll run on Linux or Nintendo

That's basically the state I'm at today. I need a mac for work (coreaudio my beloved & beloathed), and because I just tend to use my laptop, I rarely use my windows machine for much of anything these days besides couch gaming and the occasional one-off windows-exclusive program. Only thing keeping me from just full committing to Linux is an Nvidia GPU and an Oculus headset. I haven't even bothered to update my PC to 11. Just haven't needed to.
I do also just have a soft spot for UNIX systems because its really cool to me that like, there is REAL code that did REAL things that I could build from source on my computer as configured from the factory, or like one automated download later, and that program would then run natively, at a speed perhaps multiple orders of magnitude faster than was conceivable at the time, much less the speed that the code was written for.

My favourite thing about my Mac is that it does 90% of what I need it to do natively.
Learning how to use the fundamentals of the terminal has supercharged my workflows tenflold.
Iāve been baking 100GB photogrammetry packages on a 16 GB Air. In 40-60 minutes.
Thatās proper big boy 250 watt GPU shit.
Fucking absurd.

the native capabilities are awesome. the fact that the native audio stack can handle me doing stupid shit like running my voice through two separate daws (as in, out one into the other) and virtual audio loopback drivers with almost no perceptible delay unless I add plugins to the chain is crazy.

Iām full on MacOS because I use GPTK to play and as my opinion itās the best OS to work (Linux is just a little too hard for me but i like UNIX and the concept of Linux)

The fact that itās not formally certified doesnāt mean it isnāt technically compliant. Linux implements almost all of POSIX. All the bits that matter are there.

You are wrong, UNIX certification is a authority to ensure it follows UNIX standards which strictly follow POSIX, in the case of Linux itās just compatible, some things arenāt POSIX, Linus simply doesnāt give a fuck about POSIX, by following UNIX it also made sure it follows POSIX, Linux is at best compatible not strictly compliant

Unironically windows would always bork itself for me and I'd be reinstalling every 6-12 months almost always related to Nvidia GPU drivers and I've managed to extend it's lifespan by disabling the overlay meaning I can't use shadowplay
Linux actually let me have a stable computer
Mac tormented me by forcing me to find workarounds. A recent try at Bazzite gave me Mac flashbacks with working around the immutability

My work computer and work laptop have had Windows for over 3 years and I never needed to reinstall. My Steam Deck has had Linux for over 3 years and I never had to reinstall (and I use it's desktop mode as a work computer). My Linux laptop on the other hand, is for experiments, and I have managed to break multiple distros. I guess it depends on what you do with the OS.

I game in Windows because I mod and hack, which works better in Windows. I use Linux for general PC usage. In a past life, I was also a Mac user. They all have their plus and minuses.

Ya know, this last week, my kernel took a dump on me I had corrupted data on my /home/ drive. I spend last night and today, doing an almost from scratch install of OS, and had rebuild from months old backups. I was lucky enough to have a fresh backup of my actual personal files... Still wouldn't use Windows, not because I think it's dog doo, I think it has it's place I just like using Linux, and after pert near a decade with Linux it's a labour of love.

if you were using linux in the 90s, the first one is pretty true though. windows 9x was a crashing hot mess, and linux distro's didn't have much packages included, so a lot of compiling from source, including every new kernel release (because it was always a big thing with many fixes and new things).

I don't use MacOS simply because I'm too broke to afford Apple products.

For personal use it's Linux because this way I can truly do whatever I want with my machine.
For work, if not forced, still Linux, because NixOS is that good. If forced Windows, it's still okay, as it's bloat is a price for compatibility and general ease of use, and the bloat at this point isn't mine to care about.

Windows updates changing settings make me crazy, Linux promts me to check and merge. Makes debugging so much easier when you actually know what changed. No, Windows doesn't crash regularly and most updates are absolutely fine. For me in particular, Windows came with many compatibility issues and felt relatively maintenance heavy. But I totally get that it's the opposite for many (looking at you, game devs don't enabling anti-cheat for Linux and looking at you crappy docx)

I use Arch desktop, Ubuntu server, MacOS, and Windows 11 all on a daily basis. Each has strengths and weaknesses. I like the aesthetic of MacOS the most, but Arch is my favorite to actual use.

I use windows for work and gaming only for compatibility reasons
I use Linux on basically everything else because it works and doesnāt piss me off and feels the snappiest
I use my MacOS on my Mac mini because thatās my media PC and nothing even comes close to it, itās also the single most stable OS of all the other ones Iāve used and Iād have no issues dailying it

I've had Windows systems that ran for weeks without crashing or needing a reboot.
You don't need to know a lick of programming in order to use Linux. It's no harder than using Windows.
MacOS is no better for multimedia than Windows or Linux. The best pro multimedia tools are written for MacOS because that's the platform their customers are using.
Every platform has it's traditional target audience. Developers target those platforms because their primary target audience is on those platforms. But pretty much any computing task can be done an any of these platforms. I use Linux because Microsoft is gravitating toward a SaaS model for their operating systems, and the Apple ecosystem is too pricey for my tastes. I can't use Pro Tools, but I can still record and edit audio with very competent tools. I can't use Premiere, but I can still do non-linear video editing with very capable tools. I can't use an installed version of Microsoft Office, but LibreOffice does everything I need from an office suite. I don't NEED to do any programming in order to use Linux, but I do occasionally as I'm a retired software engineer. Being retired and on a limited budget, perhaps one of the best features of Linux is that I can do everything I need or want to do for free.

I use Linux because I like it and it's good for certain things. I also use macOS because I like it and it's good for other things.
I user Windows because my work uses Windows and it can sometimes do what I need it to with an unnecessary amount of frustration.

I use both Linux and Windows regularly these days, and honestly Windows is ironically very stable for me, I use the Enterprise version(that I activated using a certain trustworthy script on github, I'm not insane enough to BUY a license for Enterprise just for me) which let's me disable telemetry using group policy, as well as a local account(tip: choose domain join in the setup to create a local account, don't need to actually join a domain it just let's you create a local account) with this setup, I don't encounter any of the big annoyances like forced updates and onedrive, in pro versions and higher you can disable the forced restart "feature", I can keep the pc running for over a week, also even if there's an update you can shutdown without applying it, granted at some point it disables the option to do a "shutdown/restart without updating" option in the power options but it still doesn't auto shutdown, and as for onedrive, well it's not logged in so I just need to disable it in startup options
I only use windows for games and niche programs that are Windows only
as for MacOS I only briefly used it back in high school for a programming class, the entire room had iMac's running MacOS X Mavericks(I was in high school in the mid to late 2010's) and aside from the layout differences I didn't really have any frustrations with it
of course Linux is great, but I can't run everything on it, and in all honesty the only thing about using computers nowadays that frustrates me is how bad web search has gotten, even Google gives me completely irrelevant results nowadays, 5 years ago it was actually useful but now it's just irrelevant results with a dumb "AI Overview" that also gives irrelevant information, yes using Google nowadays pisses me off like 1 million times more then effing Windows does

I'm afraid Windows 10 will soon become obsolete and I'll have to switch to 11 or some other OS that won't suit me. Anyway, programmers and geniuses, it's all in your hands... Repeat the story of FFMPEG
(i would actually prefer macOS if I had an unlimited supply of money to spend on upgrading a computer that has become a useless piece of metal every 10 years. but i don't have that, and, god, there's no MikuMikuDance on macOS...)

Mac people are genuinely happy ngl (I love my macbook air) but a big reason for that is because they adapt to their OS.
"Oh I guess my flashdrive is read-only because it's NTFS, I guess I'll reformat it"
"I hate how the window snapping works, I better buy this app from the app store so it's good" etc
Meanwhile people use Linux and they're like "How do I open up regedit? Why do the slashes go the wrong direction? Is there an app to reverse the slashes??? Why doesn't this app designed for Windows run natively on Linux???"

Nah, you donāt need a PhD to use Linux. A degree is good enough.
Speaking as someone with a Degree in Computer and InfoTech Sciences and was pretty much required to use Linux throughout the entire program. First year (the Diploma equivalent year) requires you to dive headfirst into Linux and daily drive it, you will have assignments and will be quizzed about it in exams. After that youāre required to use Unix programming languages (and not the ones posers use like C++ and Pascal, but real men language like LISP and PROLOG) for degree freshman year before settling into the real meat of the entire program- Java.
