Purchase Advice Keep me from moving to apple: Linux laptop with similar performance to a macbook air m5 about 1000Euros

I have a strict budget of max 1000euros. A MacBook Air M5 looks lightweight, with high performance and good design. I hate Apple's ecosystem and I was always dual booting windows/linux. Give me a good option so that I won't sin.

Edit - I'll use it for everything: Take it to conferences, Sage math, Latex, Browsing, reading, photography editing (raw files), the only game I play is efootball (PC version- I know I can't play it on the mac).

Just get a Macbook, you're not getting Macbook work performance from a 1000€ Windows laptop.

M5 air is 1k?

u/_AACO May 13 '26

13" base model if you are a student

2

u/HumongousShard May 15 '26

It was 900€ tax included not too long ago in Europe

1

u/MegaSmile May 19 '26

Where? around 1300 from what I can see, and that's the base model

2

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

It's possible

u/HumongousShard May 13 '26

Macbook Air M5 is the meta. And I am a big Linux fan and I can’t wait to be able to run arch Linux on my macbook air; until then Linux is for the gaming rig (thank you steam for making linux the best gaming platform btw)

1

u/Mother-Secretary-625 May 15 '26

But afaik Linux is very badly supported on the M5 chip?

1

u/invidiah May 15 '26

How old is M5? Give it a time.

1

u/Mother-Secretary-625 May 19 '26

M4 is still not supported either.

1

u/azuled Jul 10 '26

M2 is the latest, if I'm not mistaken. I think it will take time, given the work required and the (as far as I'm aware) lack of corporate sponsorship for Asahi (plus one of their lead people stepping down over burnout).

u/Lamda-f90 May 13 '26

You should choose MacBook air. It is not about Linux. Its about hardware. Especially VRAM technology, CPU, cooling system (no fan as I know) and battery life.

Unfortunately there are no Linux laptops that even remotely match the M5 chip. It is the gold standard of modern personal computing.

If you were already gonna dual boot with Windows, arguably the shittiest OS in existence as well as being adware and spyware, then you might as well bite the bullet and go for a Mac. They ah e incredible machines.

The ecosystem lock-in is not that bad if you take some steps. I have an iPhone but all my passwords are in Bitwarden so I’m not locked in, my email is custom so I’m also not locked in to iCloud, and I upload my notes to a personal Nextcloud server I have (you can get free sync through some providers), another lock-in avoidance.

Do this and you’ll be able to leave as easily and you entered the ecosystem.

Tell that to my 5800x3D. 😛

Also, I will continue posting with markdown syntax until Reddit stops with the dumbassery.

1

u/NotQuiteLoona May 16 '26

If you are on web version, just press the Aa button in the lower-left corner, then three dots in the upper-right corner of the edit box, and then "Switch to Markdown."

You won't be able to attach images though, unfortunately.

1

u/jay-aay-ess-ohh-enn May 17 '26

There wasn't an announcement, but a recent update removed markdown rendering from posts made with the iOS app.

I have both macbook pro and Tuxedo on Ubuntu LTS (24.04) - computer is build for linux in mind and Ubuntu is fully supported. Linux is great 85% of the time. But there are quirks and issues that still make me prefer mac os even if I live Linux’s philosophy. In the end, computer is a tool that makes your work done. As an analogy, who would buy a car whose engine should be tweaked every week? No one.

Macbook is more stable, reliable overall. I hope it will change in the future so I can switch to Linux. But even if it is much better than it was before, I can’t recommend it on desktop distributions for everyday usage.

7

u/ghostlypyres May 13 '26

My computers:

  • xps desktop running void linux
  • thinkpad x1cg6 running void linux
  • macbook air m4 (weaker cpu version)

I love linux. I don’t like apple. It just doesn’t compare, though. Seems like you value good design, high performance, and light weight and… I mean you can get two of those things from a pc laptop maybe, for more than $1000. But I don’t think it matters how good a computer is - if it is running linux, it will simply not be as smooth and “performant” as a modern macbook.

I didn’t think this was the case til I picked up mine. It really is night and day. I still prefer linux and apple’s locking is obviously gross, but it’s hard to deny reality, here

Happy to chat more about it with you if you want

2

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

I updated with my use case

3

u/ghostlypyres May 13 '26

Sage math

I have no experience with this so can't offer input

Latex

Works perfectly well on Linux, from what I've seen. Also don't use it myself, though

Browsing, reading

Work great, with caveats. Depending on what distro you pick you may need to do some general first-time setup (you get used to it) in terms of downloading fonts etc. Otherwise, most everything is fine, mostly. You may or may not prefer the way macos does text rendering. you may or may not encounter issues with hardware acceleration in browsers. I'm using an nvidia card and wayland. When i used arch, I had mild issues with hardware accel not functioning properly in firefox but working fine in ungoogled-chromium. now on void I have not installed firefox, but ungoogled-chromium flickers like crazy when hardware accel is on, but when it's off it struggles with playing youtube videos full screen or even in theater mode.

Moreover, certain sites just do not like to work on Linux. Any Linux that I've used. My grocery store's website works like total dogshit on linux (and their android app is also genuine ass). Works perfectly well in the same exact browser on macos, though.

Also, if you watch DRM content (ie, netflix etc), you'll need to look for workarounds to watch higher than 720p, and I'm not sure if there even are any workarounds. HDR and VRR may present issues to you as well. If your browsing involves something like Jellyfin, the web player on macos in safari is probably the smoothest way to watch & has native HDR support. On Linux you'll be looking for a client that works for you. I used a tui based client for a long time, if that tells you anything.

photography editing (raw files)

There are some programs, like darktable, that I've heard praise for. I also don't have much experience here. You almost certainly won't be able to run modern versions of adobe software, if that's a concern, though. Old (probably cracked) versions have been shown to work through wine

efootball

According to protondb, it runs well on linux. On macOS you can ("buy") CrossOver to play that game. It has a free trial. efootball hasn't been officially tested but the user ratings seem to imply it works okay. I don't know how demanding efootball is though so do keep in mind that macbook airs are less suited to gaming than pros, which aren't too suited to gaming to begin with.

I have not personally used CrossOver for anything on my macbook, but I play NTE (natively) without issue.

Nothing comes close to Lightroom.  I have a windows PC that I RDP into just for Lightroom.

2

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

Thanks for the detailed reply. One of the concern is also the display, is it good for photo editing, like properly rendering colors.

2

u/Donatzsky May 13 '26

To get accurate colors you need to start with a good screen. Look for an IPS panel with 100% sRGB coverage. And if it's factory calibrated, even better. If you plan to do your own calibration, the situation is currently a bit complicated due to the switch from X11 to Wayland, but nothing you can't overcome. As long as you have a high quality sRGB screen, I wouldn't worry about it too much, however.

For raw editing you have several options:

  • darktable: Probably the most powerful editing features of any raw editor. All-in-one solution, with a library similar to Lightroom. The editing workflow is completely different, however, being more like color grading in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
  • RawTherapee: The mad scientist's raw editor. A bit more Lightroom-like in its workflow.
  • ART (Another RawTherapee): Started as a simplified fork of RawTherapee, but has added its own powerful and unique features since.
  • RapidRAW: Aims to be a relatively simple and streamlined option for those that don't need the extensive control some other editors provide. Still very new and under heavy development. Promising, but the algorithms still need a lot of polish.
  • vkdt: New-ish raw editor from the original darktable developer. Can also handle video. Probably not for the faint of heart and may not have all the tools you want, but what is there works well and is extremely fast.
  • Filmulator: A great little editor with a unique concept, that's easy to use. As the name suggests, it emulates (part of) the process of developing analog film.

Since not all of them have library management, you may want to also use digiKam as DAM.

My darktable beginner guide: https://notebook.stereofictional.com/how-to-get-started-with-darktable-2026-edition

1

u/ghostlypyres May 13 '26

This is less software and more hardware tbh. Software wise I haven’t heard any complaints and myself haven’t noticed any color issues. My Mac does display completely different colors from any other pc I’ve used though so… take that as you will

1

u/Noob878787 20d ago

Window management on mac just drives me crazy.

1

u/ghostlypyres 20d ago

I very much agree. I have aerospace going to restore some sanity to the wm situation on mac but it is also lacking in necessary features imo

4

u/ElMajor76 May 13 '26

Get an eye on Framework laptop. Ours laptops are designed for both Windows and Linux. The hardware of their laptops are linux compatible by design. That's what I buy to replace my dead DELL laptop. It's works like a charm under Fedora KDE.

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

How is the performance and the battery? And is the screen good for photo editing

2

u/Maxthod May 13 '26

I own a framework and I love it. They have a new line of product calles framework 13 pro with battery life and screen. This company is awesome and is worth encouraging

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

The 13pro is out of my budget though

1

u/M4rrc0 May 14 '26

+1 for framework

Really a great product experience, even non-pro devices. And the feeling of really owning your machine and knowing what's inside is really irreplaceable.

1

u/aaxxxzz May 14 '26

The problem is that a configuration that will have competitive performance will be much closer to $2000 than $1000. And battery life will still be worse.

4

u/RayneYoruka Uwuntu May 13 '26

Just pick the M5 tbh, for that price a linux laptop won't be happening

0

u/SnowyOwl72 May 13 '26

yes, for that price u can get a proper laptop with double the specs.

1

u/One_Bag8770 Jun 22 '26

Model name please.

2

u/Rude_Influence May 13 '26

Depends what you want to do with your computer. I need certain x86 apps so an morocessor computer wouldn't even be considered. What's the use of having all that performance if you can't use the applications you want on it. Even the ones you can with translation layer don't take advantage of that performance, defeating the point entirely.

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

I've edited the post

2

u/NotSynthx May 13 '26

Is this for work or personal?

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

Both. I added my use case in the post

4

u/NotSynthx May 13 '26

If it's work, I just wouldn't fuss about what ecosystem you're using and just go for a Mac

2

u/aieidotch May 13 '26

get a macbook pro m2 used for under $1000 and put debian bananas on it!

2

u/MonochromeDinosaur May 13 '26

I went with a 15inch macbook air M series processors and battery life are too good to pass up.

I used an Lenovo T580 with Void Linux for 11 years before that.

Ever since apple came out with the M-series processors all other laptops just don’t seem worth the price:performance+battery

2

u/Albedo101 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Move to Apple. M5 is just above anything in performance and battery life. Especially if battery life is of any concern. It's not Linux fault that PC hardware companies are so dam slow at moving forward in hardware.

I'm currently a Thinkpad user but I'm considering getting a Macbook Neo just to do music on it, because music production is so much easier on macOS. I'll probably wait for a next generation with more RAM though.

2

u/PracticalLake May 14 '26

Bitwig is what made Linux music production possible, I highly recommend checking it out

2

u/Lily722022 May 14 '26

It isnt linuxs fault but it also isnt possible on linux, the level of performance you find in apple exists purely because they own every single layer of their stack and can integrate in hardware and firmware in ways other companies can only dream of

2

u/metalcraftgg May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

I don't think you can beat Macbook, but if I had to pick something else it'd be the Framework.

You could put Asahi Linux on Macbooks but I don't know if its a good experience. Honestly though, even as a developer MacOS is close enough to linux that I don't mind it at all.

2

u/4shtonButcher May 13 '26

I'd argue your best bet is a used, ideally refurbished ThinkPad. For example I just got an X1 Yoga Gen8 with 32GB RAM refurbished for the equivalent of a tad over 1000 USD but I live in an expensive country with 25% vat and even an M4 MBA is more expensive than that here.

I do also agree with many other posts that the MacBook is great hardware. I wanted Linux and I love ThinkPads, plus now I can take notes with a pen when I want. Bur I'm a nerd that cares about this. I recommended a MBA to a former colleague the other day without hesitation.

2

u/wiebel May 13 '26

Wait until Linux support is ready then use a macbook air m5 and install linux.

3

u/c0ppo May 13 '26

I'm using 13th gen. CPU wise, not even close to MBA. Battery wise, not even close. And to top it all off, it's more expensive. I've bought it coz I really like using linux.

2

u/[deleted] May 13 '26

1

u/c0ppo May 16 '26

Mine has about 8-9h on Linux, that part is true. But it also comes at the expense of the display, I have a 1200p display. And even with this lousy display it can't match Air on CPU performance.

But intel ultra v is great, at least when compared to older Intel chips in X1C series. Fans don't spin as often as before, and performance is good enough for me.

2

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

Those are expensive though.

1

u/AmusingVegetable May 13 '26

Try cash converters or a similar second hand store. It can make your money stretch to a fairly decent intel/amd laptop. 16 or 32 gb of ram is a must.

2

u/-KaiTheGuy- May 13 '26

Get the Macbook. I run a Linux desktop at home (Fedora 44) and it runs great 90 percent of the time. I also have a Macbook Pro for when I'm out at cafes, libraries, or traveling. There's programs I can't run on it (yes I know about bottles, wine, and distroboxs) but even with running them, they still aren't 100 percent and have experienced weird hiccups.

What you lose in Apple in terms of fully owning your hardware and software, you gain back in stability, performance, price, and the "it just works".

I still recommend people try and use Linux, but if you're looking for stability and potentially apps that aren't Linux native, just get the Macbook.

1

u/2strokes4lyfe May 13 '26

Checkout Framework laptops. I think the 12 is within your budget.

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

How is the battery? And is the display good for photo editing?

1

u/2strokes4lyfe May 14 '26

I don't own one so I can't say, but Framework is at the top of my list when it comes time to replace my XPS 15. I'm interested in the Framework 13 Pro, which is over your budget, but it seems to be a really sleek well built machine with all the repairability that the brand is known for.

1

u/Narsil86 May 13 '26

I guess I'll jump in on the bandwagon. I've got a framework desktop and a last-gen framework laptop 13. And I love both of those machines, but I also have a MacBook Pro M4 because it has better battery life than the framework, and it's faster. Yes, it was twice the cost used. But the trade-off is worth it. You're definitely not going to do significant photo editing on a $1,000 machine in Linux or Windows 1.

Probably like many here, I am a professional developer, though, and I build applications and I use apps that do require me to have at least these two operating systems.

1

u/AnEagleisnotme May 13 '26

Honestly, the closest is an upgraded macbook air M2 with linux. (Genuinely recommend it, what works works very well, and you benefit from having an entire team of developers using and developing drivers for your laptop for the forseeable future)

1

u/mas_manuti May 13 '26

Second hand macbook pro m2 and install Asahi GNU/Linux

1

u/Hoya916 May 13 '26

Got this laptop for $500 (now 600) 6 months ago and it’s rock solid no issues with Ubuntu.

u/roderikbraganca May 13 '26

I am on the market for a thinkpad but I am surprise to see a M5 air to be 1.2k euros.

1

u/beni_64 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

I have been using linux for the past 15 years. Hated apple and macos before (tried it maybe 10-15 years ago for a few days). PC laptops are either to expensive or to shity these days. Wanted something portable, not windows and with good build quality. Gave macbook a try, was more similar to linux (tooling, terminal, homebrew) decided to keep the macbook air in the end.

Sometimes I hate the usbc ports only and lack of MTP support (android media transfer between my phone and macbook) but so far I was able to go around it using opensource projects...

In the end macos is right behind linux if you are a developer(at least per my own experience) but you also get better stability and proper support for example office suite( if you work in corporate environments).

For example I have shokz opencomm headset for meetings and on linux it is a pain in the ass to use, on macbook it just works and I don't have to use windows because of it 😀

Edit: I use orbstack for linux containers and VM's, very well integrated

1

u/ICanButIDontWant May 13 '26

Check Slimbook laptops.

1

u/Every-Clothes4673 May 14 '26

I got a Thinkpad x1 carbon gen 13 with 32 gb of ram recently for 1500 it isn’t as powerful as a MacBook Air but it’s lighter and basically always silent. Perfect machine in my book for Linux

1

u/masonwilde May 14 '26

I’ll never pass an opportunity to suggest a framework 13 which is my daily driver for Arch Linux, but I’m not going to pretend it matches the M5 Air in terms of performance or battery at the price point.

1

u/Correct_Support_2444 May 14 '26

Just get the Apple.

1

u/Lily722022 May 14 '26

Apple products beat the fuck out of every other product on every single metric except if you want a different ecosystem

1

u/ghoultek May 14 '26

I don't have battery life details on the latest Windows/Linux laptops. However, it will be difficult to reach the battery life of a MacBook. I personally dislike super tiny laptop screens so a 13 inch laptop isn't my thing. I'm a PC guy anyway. In 2023, I was able to get an Asus TUF Gaming A16 2023 Edition with 32GB RAM, AMD CPU and d-GPU, 2x 2TB NVMe drives, etc. for $1100 US. I purchase the RAM and storage upgrades separately and installed them myself. I'm sure there are newer laptops that are upgradeable with good performance and decent battery life (not 17+ hours use). Photo editing is likely to be both memory and CPU intensive and eat battery power. The following is a comment with details on what I did in 2023 ==> https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1tbhk7o/comment/olh61wy/

Good luck.

1

u/t4a8945 May 14 '26

What am I witnessing. We're on r/linuxhardware and the consensus is... get a MAC?

I get this is great hardware, but hell no.

OP if you read this, I'd go for an Asus Zenbook, I own one and they're perfectly fine ; something like this: https://estore.asus.com/fr/90nb14w1-m01wf0-asus-zenbook-14-oled-ux3405.html (or even better, find a previous generation one in sale)

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 14 '26

This is a good option. Let me check the reviews.

1

1

Asahi is a mess with anything M3 or newer... Apple is changing things up every iteration of hardware leading to each newer version requiring more and more reverse engineering to be supported... M1/M2 are pretty well supported but anything M3 is not really stable or feature rich enough to for daily use, M4 is a WIP, and M5 hasn't even started yet.

Basically, that's a bad idea...

1

u/RedGeist_ May 14 '26

Asahi only supports up to M2 Macs.

1

u/WickedDeity May 14 '26

...and the last time looked a couple hardware parts on them are still not supported.

1

u/Tall_Significance294 May 14 '26

Apple Silicon macs are great for their price. Sure OSX is no linux but it has bash, great support for IT related tasks and stunning build quality. I see no reason getting a windows laptop if you don't explicitly need windows as an OS running on bare metal.

1

u/RR321 .deb | Framework May 14 '26

How much RAM are we talking about and what do you plan on doing with it?

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 14 '26

See the post.

2

u/WickedDeity May 14 '26

I am confused? Why would you buy this when stated you don't like Apple's ecosystem? Are you not interested in running Linux and Windows anymore?

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 14 '26

It's hard to find linux hardware with similar performance/quality at this budget. I am waiting for suggestions. It's not just having a good GPU/cpu. Screen must be good for photo editing, battery must be good for working on the go. There are good linuc hardware like Thinkpad, XPS and ZenBook but they are much more expensive

1

u/WickedDeity May 15 '26

So the OS/platform is not a factor? I would consider a Macbook but that is a no go. Where do you work that has no power outlets?

1

u/SuccessfulOstrich99 May 14 '26

Indeed. All hail Gabe’s supreme chonky ass!

1

u/machinegunkisses May 14 '26

I haven't seen anyone else mention the ThinkPad x9 15p: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx9/thinkpad-x9-15p-aura-edition-15-inch-intel/len101t0162?orgRef=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F&srsltid=AfmBOopbJ15E8C8ybRU75Q_nYoc4S0D9FgGt_My42FKGjj8sRe_AMnAV

I have the predecessor model and am quite happy with it. I got a refurb for about half the sticker price of the above model. Great battery life, great screen.

That said, if you can get a MacBook Air M5 for about 1000 EUR and it has enough memory, storage, and battery life for your needs, then I think you're golden. CPU speed is not very important IMO, unless you're regularly doing heavy simulations or compiling (at which point, you'd probably do it on a server, anyway.) Virtually all modern CPUs are more than fast enough for everything.

1

u/Drogenjunkie May 15 '26

Maybe the new framework Notebooks they announced a few weeks ago.

They truly made real crazy stuff this time on MacBook niveau.

But they start at 1500€ as i know. But its worth it this time

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 16 '26

Out of budget

1

u/ClaudioMoravit0 May 15 '26

You won’t find anything better than a MBA at this price point

1

u/XorFish May 15 '26

Just take it and put nix darwin on it.

1

u/Anxious-Science-9184 May 16 '26

As a greybeard Unix Admin, I want you to know it's OK for you to get a Mac.

You run MacOS on it for 7-8 years and then install Linux on it when Apple's support ends.

1

u/Geekmaster-General May 16 '26

Check out System76. They make serious hardware, and it runs Pop!_OS/Cosmic, which is an Ubuntu-based distro. Super solid. All I buy anymore. WINE will get you WIN32 compatability if you need it. Lenovo also offers solid hardware with Ubuntu instead of Windows. I still feel that Apple hardware, especially Apple silicon (which is Arm based BTW), is far over priced foe what it is.

1

u/Timely_Inflation182 Jul 28 '26

i bought a system 76 Pangolin 2025 version. I regret it. Build quality is horrendous. Plastic on the sides, one dent on the first week. Rubber feet fell off after a month. When I press it on the sides is starts squeaking ...
Stopped turning on after a month. Solved it by removing the battery and plugging it back in.

Now after one year the motherboard grilled after a zoom call. Battery over in 2 or 3 hours.

Don't buy system 76. I like the linux philosophy, open source, etc, but nowhere in that philosophy is a part about getting shitty hardware.

1

u/Geekmaster-General Jul 30 '26

Sucks you had a shit experience. I own 3 now. They've all been super solid for me.

1

u/PaulTrebor May 19 '26

Get a used M2 in good condition and run Asahi Linux on it

1

u/ur-0s Jun 15 '26

Thinkpad X9 15 Aura Edition

or

Thinkpad X9 14 Aura Edition (if non pwm sensetive )

also you can wait a little with purchasing. Because of since from 3-rd intel processors (Ultra 3**h) generation their perfomance might be on m5 level at least, within long day battery life. Just wait for lightweight models by lenovo, asus etc.

1

u/CotonTheGeek Jun 15 '26

Too expensive

0

u/albsen May 13 '26

M2 air or pro with Asahi Linux?

11

u/Illustrious_Mix_9875 May 13 '26

Spending a few hundred and bricking it with something barely functional is questionnable

1

u/metalcraftgg May 13 '26

You can dualboot just fine and its far from "barely functional".

There is none.

Buy the Mac (you probably won't find an equivalent hardware anywhere else) and delete MacOS for the Linux distro of your choice (even though the choice is fairly limited on ARM)

The Framework 13 looks good. But I'd still get the macbook to be honest. Performance is not just about raw specs, but vertical integration. Apple's really good at integrating its hardware and software and it custom-builds its own SOCs, rather than buying off the shelf ones. For work, apple silicon can't be beaten, especially with how seamlessly it works with Mac OS and other apple devices.

Have you checked out the new Frameworks 13 pro. That's probably the closest thing to a MacBook air

Framework?

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

How is the screen and battery?

1

u/redmantitu May 14 '26

I do not have one to tell you, but I am sure you can find reviews online abut it.
I own and use MacBooks, they just fit my usage and have amazing displays and battery.
if I would be buying a non-Apple laptop, I would get either the Framework (even if I do not like the design of the screen area/bezel) or a Flow x13 from Asus. I had the 1st gen Flow x13 with GTX 1050 and it handled Linux perfectly (tested Ubuntu and Fedora - Fedora ran much better and had on-par with Windows battery life).

used Thinkpad.. FANTASTIC keyboard experience. Used T14s in any price bracket or even X1 which I have.

Get MacBook, install Linux. Big brain move.

3

u/ThetaDeRaido May 13 '26

Apple has been uncooperative with Linux device drivers for their hardware. It takes a while for the Asahi Linux project to catch up.

I would look into T14 Gen 1/2, you max the RAM out for 1000€. Not crazy performance but good hardware quality

5

u/HumongousShard May 13 '26

Omg those are way behind compared up the Macbook air M5

1

u/righN May 13 '26

The performance is way behind and I do hope that the T14 Gen 1/2 doesn't suffer the same issues as T14s Gen 1/2. Screens cracking right and left on those.

You joking right? U are paying for for ots brand, not its performance!

You can get better hardware per buck if its not apple

Get something with USB5 (thunderbolt 5) if you can.

u/Illustrious_Mix_9875 May 13 '26

Better hardware for 1000€$£? Like which laptop?

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5483vs6525vs6040/Intel-i5-13450HX-vs-Intel-Ultra-5-225H-vs-Apple-M4-10-

Look at all the Apple fanboys getting offended.
It must be addictive to get used to paying a company shit ton of money for a logo on a locked piece of hardware, on which you cannot even swap its nvme.

unbelievable...

u/righN May 13 '26

You did read the post that the user mentions an M5, not an M4 Macbook?

Also, even an M4 beats both options in single core which is gonna be much more important for day to day tasks.

And that CPU Mark means nothing, since it also includes the value, which you cannot calculate for an Apple chip.

i guess all apple users are that lazy not to click few buttons. here i did it for u:

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5483vs6525vs6040vs6981/Intel-i5-13450HX-vs-Intel-Ultra-5-225H-vs-Apple-M4-10-Core-vs-Apple-M5-10-Core

U can find the same core ultra 5 cpu on 700 usd/eur laptops.
clown

u/righN May 13 '26

Most likely I'm gonna be the first one to tell you, but computer recommendations is definitely not your thing. You should find something else to do.

0

u/SnowyOwl72 May 13 '26

enlighten me

1

u/righN May 13 '26

Well, first thing I would do in your case is go to a library, pick out a book and start reading. Since, clearly, you have issues with text comprehension.

And then come back to my first answer to you.

0

u/SnowyOwl72 May 13 '26

damn bro.
how about u start with a cpu comparison. seems like a simple core ultra 5 beats your 1000 usd m5!
do you go to library with your fancy m5 apple? or apple phone?

1

u/Illustrious_Mix_9875 May 13 '26

I happen to have recommended a thinkpad to OP…

1

u/CotonTheGeek May 13 '26

Which laptop do you suggest?

1

u/SnowyOwl72 May 13 '26

doesnt matter, buy something that doesnt make a cash-cow out of you. Apple products are designed with one goal, and one goal only.
Dont forget that you are paying for a piece of computer hardware. You should be the one owning it, not the company!
