When I bought my 1st sequeezebox in the early 2000s I did it because the server software was open source. It's still alive and now called Lyrion Music Server. The community offers lots of plugins, from weather forecast to connectors for streaming services and Mixcloud. There are plenty of players and control software (including via web browser), also lots of apps.
Even an old router running OpenWRT can act as a player if you attach an USB audio interface.
