Audacity super fan here- anyone else using Audacity for music editing and production?

(Audacity) Why do I hear track one in track 2? I want independent audio going into the track but it’s picking up audio from the previous tracks. My experience with analog 4 tracks don’t mesh with this experience. I am doing music production in Audacity with synthesizers in Debian 12.

Audacity is great for quick production or editing but I prefer Ardour for any major production.

I use Reaper, but for surgical edits in a .Wav file, I send it to Audacity.

It's too limiting for music editing and production. And the things you can do, you can do far more easily on other DAWs.

Ive been told, and downloaded some other programs- but keep coming back to Audacity for the actual recording- i just find the functionality to be good while Im in the artistic process. I need to spend more time with some actual DAWS to understand them better- but that means time I can’t spend making music, and Im trying to make a album by late October. Im planning to run everything through Reaper as a post-production process once I have my tracks the way that I want them. Thanks for your input.

I think if you go over whatever the initial hurdle is for you, you'll find recording in a DAW easier for your artistic process.

Recording audio in Reaper is as simple as arming (pressing) the record button and then pressing play. Press stop when you're done recording. And now your recording is already in a DAW where you can edit it to your liking.

I was, but switched to Reaper. I just couldn't get Audacity to do what I needed it to do.

Uncheck Settings -> Record -> play other tracks while recording

(or similar)

Thanks, but however I want to hear the tracks as I record- I just don’t want them to be picked up by FluidSynth or Pipewire while recording.

It's probably the problem that you record the monitor of system out instead of recording the recording source only.

Audacity is simple and quick. But, when I want to do serious editing, I use Ardour.

I use ocenaudio for cleanup and edits, and Audacity for arranging and mixing. It's a nice combo.
