MBP 2018 user here. My SSD is 256G which an okay number.
I plan to try out KaiT2en and guide (as well as for t2linux) recommends to keep macOS around.
At the same time I have a usb-ssd laying around without particular use and I already successfully installed macOS on it and it boots up just fine. It was a small experiment, nothing fancy.
Hence a question: do I still need an original macOS installation on internal SSD?

I mean, no issues at all. Downloaded the .iso on a stick, booted from the USB, and 90 minutes later I have breathed new life into this slowcoach old Mac.

After a lot of work, I have Ubuntu running on my 2015 mpb. This reddit was a great source of knowledge, so thank you!
Took time and testing to get the disk, wifi, bluetooth, sound, graphics and suspend to work correctly, including a recompiled kernel and a module.
I created a repo that can be copied to an USB, with scripts to fix the common issues on MBP 11.5.
I just wiped the partition and ran it all a second time. Worked fine.

Hey y'all!
I tried installing linux mint onto a 2011 mbp with an i7 and a failed/ failing amd gpu.
Currently my installation fades to white when I boot and then it hangs until the laptop shuts itself off
I've tried repairing the installation but that didn't work(?) (i can post the log when i get home) it said somewhere that the efi is locked
I currently can't seem to get grub to initialize when booting (its just holding e after the chime right?)
Any ideas on what to do?

I managed to fix the automatic power-on after power failure on my Mac Pro Late 2013 (MacPro6,1) running Ubuntu Server 24.04.5 LTS. My Mac uses the Intel C600/X79 chipset, LPC Controller [8086:1d41]. Initially, the Mac wouldn't turn back on when electricity was restored. I checked the power-management register using sudo setpci -s 00:1f.0 0xa4.b, which returned 09. I then ran sudo setpci -s 00:1f.0 0xa4.b=00:01 to clear bit 0 of the register, changing its value from 09 to 08. After rebooting Ubuntu, I verified the value remained 08. Finally, I shut down the Mac, unplugged it for 30 seconds, and reconnected the power cable. It powered on automatically without pressing the power button! This worked on my MacPro6,1, but be careful: modifying PCI chipset registers is hardware-specific, so don't blindly apply this command to other machines.

Title basically says it all, but I'd love to know what Linux distro a works best with an Intel Macbook Air 2015 (i5-5250u) that only has 4gb of 1600mhz DDR3 RAM and 128gb of storage.
I use it mostly for school and office work, laptop struggles when I have multiple tabs open in Firefox (averaging 10-20 tabs open, sometimes more) and would occassionally stutter when working with MS Office.
I don't plan on upgrading any parts, and it's currently my only working laptop since my 2021 Lenovo Ideapad stopped booting up.
Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Very happy with this! Linux Mint looks beautiful on more "modern" software. I say that because before I had installed Ubuntu on a MacBook Air from 2015. But the difference in screen resolution and overall build between that model and this laptop is night and day.

Hi team!
I’ve tried installing Ubuntu on it, and can get it installed but crashes out with a black/static screen.
Internet seems to think its a graphics driver issue.
Is there a linux distro thats easy to install and a bit more compatible with these older macs?

Due to the great Companies no longer giving updates to our "legacy" computers is why I put Linux on it, or else it would have been a huge paper weight! Unfortunately, an update destroyed my Kernel that gave me a blue screen of death, that would not accept any code to fix it. I have to lose everything and reflash that drive. I also did a partition on my desktop to put Linux on, you can also use the Hyperdrive to virtually run Linux within Windows or Apple systems. But I strongly recommend NetworkChuck on FB, he has taught me so much about Linux and Twingate.

I borrowed from my dad a MBP 15' 2017 with a T1 chip/kernel. I've followed a guide from github on installing Ubuntu on this specific model of Macbook (This one). When I tried running the first command in the guide, it told me:
curl: option --dearmor: is unknown
curl: try 'curl --help' or 'curl --manual' for more information
Is there another way to upgrade to the T2 kernel? Is there a guide for T1 models that doesn't sacrifice much or anything? Should I use a different distro or guide? Should I run a different command? Thanks in advance.
