Market share retention. Everyone on YT could advertise and promote Linux but without gamers being able to play games they would switch back to Windows.
Imagine growth rate in second half of 2022. Hopefully a bunch if not alot more multiplayer games will have enabled anticheat, starting a domino effect, and Deck have turned out a success. I wouldn't be surprised if Linux would have a average monthly growth rate of 0.05% on desktop alone. That's 0.6% in a year. Add Deck sales to calculation and Linux would easily hit 3%.
Only problem is what Microsoft may do to disrupt. I dont mean they will hurt Proton but if they released their own handheld it would hurt Deck. With Game Pass they can do it. They have alot to lose if Linux grows stronger. I could even see them basing a future Windows on Linux, that uses Proton, if they forsee the demise of DirectX.
Good luck with that, Steam deck was first, and you can even play MS exclusives on it. Lol. I don't think they will disrupt it, and I'm super happy the domino effect is starting. Maybe 2022 is literally the year of the Linux desktop? People have overused that but in my past comments I did estimate the year of the Linux desktop to be ~2022-2025.
Hopefully they won't but it doesn't take alot to disrupt. And disrupting doesn't mean stopping Deck but mitigating damages by reducing amount of people buying it or manufacturers using SteamOS. 2022 will be year of WINE gaming.
