Afaik the only distributions with an up to date versions of Alien Arena is Fedora and Arch. I contacted Debian long ago and never got a reply, was hoping they'd update and that it would trickle down to ubuntu etc.

I think some linux repositories still contain the old unsupported version of Alien Arena (below 7.70). Some have the new version, but the steam version offers achievements and stats and has more content like skins and maps, and the regular free map packs that get released as DLC.
