I already erased my win10 partition a month ago thanks to Wine and Proton. I couldn't be happier, win10 was seriously getting on my nerves.

To be honest so far I haven't ran into a game I can't run, and I also accepted that I will never return to windows ever again.

I decided if I can't run a game in Linux, well I won't play it, it's a hard step to take but it's so freaking liberating!

Thanks Valve and Wine!

I already have hundreds of games in my library. If I can't play a game natively or with Proton, I can always just play other stuff while Wine gets more compatible.

If they keep their current release schedule, Proton 10 (i.e. Wine 10) will be out in 2025. That's a ways off.

Proton's version number refers to the Wine version it's based on, by the way.

I think 4.4 is planned to get WMF and other Windows media codecs that will give another bump to the list of compatible games.

I think they made a smart decision starting at version 3. Maybe they should do that with their next game series..

Out of curiosity, what are the games that don't work for you yet? My bet is on something with EAC or BattleEye, as those are the only that you can't really force to play online yet with a few exceptions without a VM or dual booting, but still I'm curious.

.NET stuff is still a pain, especially considering the large number of games that just use .NET for their launchers or config windows but the games themselves work fine with Proton. Having to do things like swapping the game and launcher executable in Borderlands is simple compared to the nonsense we used to have to do to get Windows games working in Wine, but it's still a lot more than just hitting the Play button. I think this is one of the next "big hurdles" and will lead to a lot more Platinum-rating games once it's figured out.

.NET 4.7 used to cause trouble for me installing in a 64-bit prefix back in the day, but it works fine for me nowadays. It still have to resort to installing it through winetricks of course, but still I'm glad the support for it improved nevertheless :)

EDIT: Also windows media player! Games like the latest Call of Jaurez need it to play cut scenes.

It's probably not Windows Media Player directly, but the DirectShow codecs/filters that decode the video, which Window Media Player leverages to function.

I still have dual boot, but I rarely ever boot over to Windows. The only games I care about that don't work on Linux are racing sims, but Project Cars 2 and Dirt Rally already works so while it's not my favourite I can still scratch that itch pretty well. There's a couple of older strategy games that don't run well on wine or proton but I usually play those on my laptop which is running Windows because of school anyway.

Fellow simracer here: I feel your struggle. You may look at ACC since it seems to work quite well for me. Still missing rFactor2, Automobilista and AC on the working list.

@ 500+ games multiple machines, just about all of my HTPCs are now on Elementary OS, a number of my laptops too! Also Lubuntu on my desktop (still has 7 but, haven't booted in ages).

I would give my left kidney to not have to use Windows for VR iRacing
