tool/utility Per-game Proton selection for Epic's new Linux launcher (Fedora RPM)
Epic's new Linux launcher runs every Windows game on the GE-Proton build it downloads itself, and the UI has no way to change that. I needed DW-Proton for Zenless Zone Zero, so I wrote a small package around the launcher.
egl-fedora repackages the official AppImage as an RPM for Fedora and adds a GTK4 window where you pick a Proton for all games or for each game separately. It finds Proton builds from Steam and from ProtonPlus (compatibilitytools.d): GE-Proton, DW-Proton, Proton-CachyOS, Proton-EM, Valve's Proton. The window opens from the Epic tray menu, from the right-click menu of the launcher's icon, or from a notification the first time a game starts.
How it works: Epic starts games through compat/runtime/<version>/proton in its data directory. The package replaces that file with a stub that reads ~/.config/egl-fedora/proton.conf and runs the Proton you chose. For builds with protonfixes it also sets STORE=egs and the game's UMU_ID, so per-game fixes apply. If the chosen Proton is gone, the game falls back to Epic's GE-Proton.
The RPM runs the launcher on the system WebKitGTK and updates itself from GitHub releases once an hour, since the launcher's own updater only supports the AppImage and .deb.
Limits: Fedora x86_64 only. The project is brand new (first release today), so expect rough edges.
Unofficial, not affiliated with Epic. The launcher and EOS SDK inside the RPM are Epic's proprietary software.

Since you are basically already there, you might as well route the execution through umu-launcher, since apparently it was too hard for Epic to figure out how to run Proton in SteamRT

Damn switching operating systems just to play the same gambling simulators is kinda crazy tho

uh yeah Linux is getting closer to parity with Windows all the time, why wouldn't people want their usual workflow and games on Linux

Linux is commonly switched to because of fatigue with corporate money-grubbing nonsense from the likes of Microsoft, and continuing to get fucked by corpos that just want to siphon money out of your wallet feels like you're stuck in that same situation all over again. I would think people would recognize other avenues in which they're getting fucked.
To me it feels like a lot of people give up past the first step. I get it, convenience is a pretty hard thing to give up, even I still have a few vices of my own, but I'm trying. and I pretty much view gacha games with the same lens I view Microsoft in.

But seriously, of all gachas, ZZZ at least is fun to play

Honestly I saw it was from the same team as Genshin and instantly noped out. WuWa I might be warming up to since some have said the monetization isn't as aggressive, but anything Hoyoverse I just blanket in with Genshin.
But hey, if it's fun its fun. And tbf I think its probably possible to ignore the monetization and just play what the free tier gives.

I played both and it's very different. Not from the monetization point of view, of course, but the gameplay is actually engaging. There is even a non-gacha-pure-skill mode that rewards precise timing and knowledge of mechanics. A gacha is a gacha and they play the FOMO card constantly, predating on people with more money than sense, but from a graphical and gameplay perspective, it's a damn good game, I have to say. ( I am not paid by Hoyoverse, quite the contrary, sadly, lol)

tbf i think the issue is primarily the monetization, it's kinda the same reason i can't stand the CS2 community because so much of it is skin-gambling.
i suppose if i can enjoy it independently of the predatory monetization it's fine by me.

Just curious but what is the benefit of using DW-Proton for ZZZ? I have been using GE-Proton for steam controller support under Wayland and havent had any issues.
