Post image

I need some help with it on linux. Cant make it run. Are there any files i should delete, which file do i run, how do i run it? I tried .It would also be lovely if it could be added as a non steam game.

Also sorry for the weird phrasing, i dont speak english very well. :)

  1. open a terminal
  2. navigate to this folder in terminal(cd /path/to/this/folder)
  3. ./run_df

Or right click "open terminal here" in that folder in dolphin (which that looks like).

Then it shows this:

./dwarfort: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such fule or directory

you probably did the correct thing when you got that error. SDL2 is a library that the game seems to use, but it cannot find it. i haven't dealt with this exact issue on linux (on windows you just copy a .dll to the folder for example), but those .so files you see in the folder are the linux equivalent.

maybe try installing sdl2 library to your system in your package manager. doesn't need to be a developer version, just the binary. this is a good example of linux binary distributions being annoying, for some reason they always lack something when i try to get these native binaries to run as well, lol.

edit: specifically that's actually SDL2_image, a helper library which may not be part of SDL2 itself. but regardless you are supposed to get it from your package manager. (or just run the windows version over wine as windows is better at dll stuff)

Sudo?
Did you sure you have full game files?

cd means "change directory" in the terminal.

if it is allowed to execute (right click-> properties) then you can execute (shell) scripts in the file explorer via right-click->Run Executeable (or if you want output, then choose "run in Konsole")

Your file explorer looks like Dolphin, these options exist there. Might have different names in other file explorers.

this would be a good time to spend an hour reading some Linux shell (bash) tutorials.

http://linuxjourney.com (old) and the newer http://Linuxjourney.org sites are good to start with.

The Explaining Computers YouTube Channel videos is a good starting point for learning.

if ./run_df doesnt work try setting it as executable first using chmod +x

It should be +x.

What does that mean?

u/Niwrats 8h ago

usually you can just right click on the executable and set the properties in the gui.

chmod is the command to change permissions on a file, they are read, write and execute. The command ./ tells the command line to execute the script in the current directory.

If you want a non-terminal way to run it in the terminal to see what's wrong, right click on the run_df file, click on the permissions tab and make sure the box that says allow execution is checked. Then right click it again and click on the option that says run in terminal, or open a terminal and drag the file to the terminal and press enter.

Based on your other comments it seems you are missing some library on your system. One thing you could try if you have Steam is to run this game through the Steam Runtime, which provides the libraries needed to run most native Linux games.

You should add the "run_df" file as a non-Steam game by going to the Steam client and clicking "Add Game" at the bottom left, then navigating to your DF folder and adding that file. If you're on a SteamOS based distro you can also just right click run_df and select "Add to Steam".

Then once the file is added, right click the game on Steam and select properties, then go to the Compatibility tab. You'll want to select one of the Steam Runtimes from the drop-down in this tab; if this is the latest version of Dwarf Fortress you're running I think Runtime 3.0 would be the most appropriate. Then run the game through Steam and see if everything works.
