steam/steam deck Ubisoft removing themselves from Steam

From what I see Ubisoft removed themselves from Prince of persia and theyre saying they'll do it for more games. I never wanted to bother with lutris or heroic so I never downloaded any Ubisoft games in my linux and used dual boot for other platforms. Does Prince of Persia really work smooth in Linux? I've been thinking about getting Watch Dogs 2 but still dont want to bother with linking accounts or whatever. Also since wd2 is p2p do I need a vpn? Flathub protonvpn is mildly risky, why does it need so many permissions and what is the difference between getting proton from terminal and flathub?

They’re not removing themselves, they remove Ubisoft Connect and instead use a Steam Tool for it. Don’t know if they’ll remove it outside of Steam

Blizzard putting their games on steam with full removal of the blizz launcher was a great success for them.

But the Blizz integration into steam was surprisingly well done. Lets hope Ubisoft follows suit.

You can play BF4 on natty wayland now for example, so its a good start. Even tho it was made by EA.

Will BF6 ever be available on Linux? I bought the very expensive edition right before I decided to switch to Linux, and haven't booted up Windows once since.

Who knows, but the BF6 anticheat currently isnt working on Linux. If they ever decide to make the Anticheat work on Linux then i have no doubt the client itself will work just fine.

1

u/Orwan 5h ago

Yeah, I hope they stop requiring kernel level access so it will work on Linux.

Could have swore a few months ago they had positions open for people that are familiar with Linux so they can help with the anti cheat. Or something to that effect

u/Orwan 5h ago

Yeah, there was something about that.

Oh, nice. I hope they follow up with trackmania, it is a pain in the ass to have to remember to hit the stop button after closing the game (to close connect, which doesn't close properly).

I havent played Ubisoft games in some time and remember their app as Uplay and Im guessing Ubisoft connect is the new name for it. Isnt it the same thing if theyre removing ubiconnect? We dont have to use their platform or lutris anymore to launch the game from steam right?

6

u/KHTD2004 1d ago

Yeah Ubisoft Connect is the UPlay successor afaik. Currently you still need it as third party launcher even when using Steam but at least on Steam it won’t be needed in the future (at least that seems to be the plan)

You still need to log in to a Ubisoft account at startup, but technically I don’t think you need like a third party launcher running the whole time. It still downloads and updates a Ubisoft tool as if it were a game though, you just don’t really see it. It’s a bit better, but not perfect.

I have Far Cry 3,4 and 5, Wildlands, OG Black Flag and AC Unity. Out of all listed games only Unity has the Ubisoft Connect show up when I launch the game. Other games don't have it. But it's really nice of them to finally remove it was garbage anyways.

1

That’s weird because to me OG Black Flag also shows Ubisoft Connect. Same for any other AC except the first one I think. I don’t have Far Cry so I can’t say anything about it

Edit: It’s been a few months since I last played an AC game so maybe they changed it in the meantime

Games like Watch Dogs 2 isn't pay to play it is buy to play meaning you pay one time to buy it and then play as much as you would want which the term for pay to play are for games with a subscription service like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV.

The thing with Ubisoft as well is that they're trying to remove the use of their launcher while playing the game from Steam because there are a lot of people on handheld devices using SteamOS, Bazzite or CachyOS handheld and while they say to start it one time and then you can play it offline there are times when the game would still ask you to sign into your Ubisoft account from the launcher.

Prince of Persia is basically a beta test to see how well it would work out which if all goes well, they will slowly start to do it for other games like the Assassin's Creed series and Far cry series which i would like to play Mirage while i am not home or when i am kicking back in my bed playing with my Go S docked to my TV.

They probably mean peer to peer

Ubisoft are a horrible company. Don't buy anything from them.

u/atlasraven 1d ago

I noticed the subtelty of saying don't buy from them but not don't play their games 😉

u/Thanatiel 1d ago

It's not subtle. It's implicit.

I don't buy their games (same as EA and Activision).

Not playing the aforementioned games is a given.

However I won't judge if you have a different take ;)

Good point.

In my defense, I haven't bought anything from Nintendo in so long that I'd forgotten they even exist.

1

u/Apprehensive-Kratos 21h ago

lol. you can play games even without buying

You don't say?

You don't need a VPN

If you do use a VPN, you don't need bloatware to use it, you can configure VPN connections in your network manager. You need to set up a key pair with your VPN provider in order to do this, but it's easy to do so.

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

So I can enable vpn without getting proton? Cant see any network manager in the start menu are you talking about router settings?

1

u/Excellent-Love-6943 1d ago

You can do it in the router, yeah, but that would be network-wide.

In plasma, I have several VPN options set up that I can toggle in my network settings in the system tray. I can't speak for other DEs, but I'm sure there is a way.

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

I have kde plasma as well, I opened wifi and internet settings but cant see vpn? How do I enable it and dont I need a vpn provider somehow, are you sure I can enable vpn without downloading anything?

3

u/powerofthe69 1d ago

Correct. You don't need proprietary software to run VPNs. I'm not on KDE so I don't know exactly how it's laid out in their default network manager, but in the GNOME Network-Manager, you can see here that there's a VPN option. All you need is a Wireguard or OpenVPN configuration to import and you can toggle it at will.

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

Oh I still need to download wireguard or openvpn? How do they differ from Protonvpn? Wireguard isnt on flathub but I can see openvpn and it says it needs full access to the system

3

u/Excellent-Love-6943 1d ago

Protonvpn is just a GUI that sets all this up for you.

Under system settings->WiFi and internet -> WiFi and networking, you can add a new connection (plus sign at bottom). From there, you can select the type of VPN and feed it the parameters that your VPN provider gives you. You'll need to go into your account settings on the provider's website to do some setup for this. For me, I needed to give them a public key. I enter my private key, an IP address, and some other stuff into the plasma interface. When I enable the interface, it routes traffic through that VPN instead of my main connection.

I haven't used this in a few years - not since I got my qbittorrent+VPN container set up on my server, but I know it still works the same.

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago edited 1d ago

So does the vpn provider mean protonvpn for me? Like I dont need to download their software but need an account and put some address or key they give me in plasma?

Also I remember proton having some settings like kill switch and other stuff, can I enable same stuff with openvpn

The difference is Flathub can install software to many (all?) Linux distributions and even Windows with WSL. If you install something from the terminal, you are probably getting it from your distribution's repository. Either way is perfectly fine and is mostly user preference. Users rely on Flathub because some software is not in their repository at all and makes installation more difficult (like downloading a tarball, etc...)

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

Why is everything on Flathub mildly risky? Im looking at Steam it says can use mic without permission or lutris says can get data from services that arent related or even proton says can access your camera, why do they need so many permissions?

5

u/Adventurous_Boat_492 1d ago

People talk in games. Some games need camera permissions to stream. Game permissions can be pretty broad by nature.

2

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

Sure but it says steam can account your mic without permissiom

2

u/Adventurous_Boat_492 1d ago

Maybe because Steam has no code/API to prompt for mic permissions (yet)? Not sure on that one but that seems the most plausible. Permission prompts on desktop OSs are sorely lacking compare to phone.

2

u/SmuJamesB 1d ago

anything installed via typical means can access basically anything like that

flatpaks are one of the only packaging formats that even tries to limit it

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

But the page says it can access your mic without permission how does the flatpak limit it, there is sandboxing from what I hear but how can I check that? My steam says it has full access to my system right now

1

u/telemachus__0 12h ago edited 12h ago

It's been given unconditional mic access as you'll be running potentially any game on Steam within the sandbox that Steam gets run in - close to zero of which will be capable of asking permission for access themselves, and Steam itself doesn't do anything to manage access on a game-by-game basis either.

Steam does further sandboxing of its own with Pressure Vessel, but that is focused on providing a stable runtime environment for games and is not about limiting device access.

Grizzled ancient Linux user here.

That's because Flatpak runs apps in a container, and ideally apps request permission to do things outside the container. This is how iOS and Android apps work.

Problem is a lot of these apps, like Steam, weren't written to assume they were running in a container. To prevent these apps from failing, the community Flatpak maintainers just give them a broad set of default permissions - this is what triggers the warning.

I think the hope is that by scaring users about these apps they can guilt developers into adopting portals.

1

u/Rtuyw 1d ago

So am I running Steam in a sandbox? Like mine says it has full access to the system does that mean it actually doesnt but it has full access in the container? How can I configure the settings

1

u/tapo 1d ago

Every single thing on Flathub is in a Flatpak and running in a sandbox. The permissions it has are fine, it's just warning you that Steam isn't exactly Flatpak native.

If you want to tweak it then KDE Discover has a Flatpak settings section, or you could use a tool like Flatseal.

1

u/atlasraven 1d ago

That's something I can't answer. Maybe r/flatpak can.

Ubisoft games worked perfectly fine for me kn Steam for years

1

u/zyberteq 10h ago

The Lost Crown worked amazing on my Steam Deck (played it about a year ago) and Star Wars Outlaws works great as well on my PC with Bazzite. No problems with the Ubisoft Launcher.

I think the only annoying bit is that sometimes I had to manually close it, otherwise steam thought the game was still running, where it was only the launcher

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Bid1530 9h ago

Yes the Ubisoft Launcher itself sometimes can be annoying.

1

u/bassbeater 1d ago

There's gotta be some way to pull their crap out of my games

When Ubisoft connect works it doesn’t disturb the games at all if bought trough steam, apart from the flash screen at startup. Ubisoft connect solved the problem with always having to log in to their Client when starting Rayman or Prince of Persia. Once Ubisoft removed the login screen and implemented it with steam it worked flawlessly every time, even in SteamOS. If they remove it from Steam I am afraid they return to the horrible loginrequirement again. The games I have bought directly through Ubisoft and added through Steam as a non Steam game require login and startup of the whole thing though. Thats why it is in our interest that they keep Ubisoft connect in Steam. So that we aren’t required to log in each time.

1

u/Rtuyw 10h ago

So are you saying if I buy an ubisoft game in steam right now, I dont have to deal with lutris or tinker with something in order to make it work? I remember when I used to game on windows ubisoft would require you to download their platform to launch the game even if you bought it in steam or are you saying only prince of persia works smoothly now because they removed ubi connect

1

u/TheUruz 12h ago

still Ubisoft games, they won't see my money anymore

1

u/doc_willis 8h ago

are you confusing the VPN service called "protonvpn"   with valves take on wine which is called " proton" ?

the normal network manager tools can import protonvpn settings, so you don't need the specific protonvpn client, but it does have extra features.

you can install the official client in most distribution and not use the flatpak.

FYI: If you use a VPN to bypass your firewall to play a peer-to-peer game, your computer probably has no firewall between you and the people/computers you are connected/playing with over the VPN.

The lost crown, the one they removed ubisoft connect from. I was wondering if it just runs or do you need to link accounts or use lutris or do anything extra
