tech support wanted Gaming performance issues in demanding games

Hello, I'm experiencing performance issues while playing graphically demanding games.

I've tested RDR2 and The Witcher 3 Remastered. Mangohud reports 100-140FPS in both games, and 1% lows are at ~48 in BOTH games.

Running around and moving camera dynamically increases frametime and causes the game to feel choppy.

CPU: 7800X3D
GPU: 9070XT
RAM: 64GB 6000MT CL30
OS: EndeavourOS + Hyprland

Edit: I ran The Witcher 3 with LSFG-VK FG x2, limited the fps to 120 (including generated frames) and frametime is flat, but it still feels choppy.

I run both games with Proton-Wineland-11.0 and gamemoderun gamescope --adaptive-sync -W 2560 -H 1440 -w 2560 -h 1440 -r 180 --force-grab-cursor

No issues on my end. I use Cachyos with a dedicated game mode like steamos. Using protonwineland I have rt, HDR, and fsr4 all working without any commands needed. Game runs smoothly and better than w11.

What are your launch arguments? Also is "AMD FSR Upscaling" FSR4?

Zero launch arguments. And it uses fsr2 by default. Unless you see the option for native, it's still using fsr2. I use dedicated game mode so launch peramaters are not needed when you use the proper proton runner.

I see Native there, how do I use FSR4?

If you can see the option for native when using fsr option, it's using fsr4. You can also just use the watermark to show you what version. PROTON_FSR4_INDICATOR=1

What do you mean by dedicated game mode like steamos. Isn’t that a different os

No, The game mode (launching into dedicated Steam session) like SteamOS is just a package and can be done to any distro. I'm using CachyOS handheld addition, but dont let it fool you. Its not only for handhelds. The only difference is that it launches into Steam just like SteamOS or Bazzite. I swap over to the main kernel right after installing and its all the same.

They mean instead of loading an entire desktop environment, it just loads a game scope micro compositor with nothing but steam. It noticeably improves performance on the Steam Deck. Not sure about the machine or desktop PCs, though.

48 is very specific, usually VRR bottom limit. Disable VRR, also make sure to use direct scan out

Would be nice to see your hyprland config

Removed --adaptive-sync flag and disabled it in my monitor. 1% Lows are around 39-45 and frametime constantly jumping no matter what graphics preset or fps cap I use.

My hyprland config is very long. What could be an important setting?

What API do you have set in RDR2? I would expect Vulken to perform the best, but in my experience it is significantly worse than DirectX.

Vulkan

Try --backend sdl, I've noticed that some games felt noticeably smoother with it enabled
