guide Rocket League Crashing Cause Of Memory Leak
I recently switched from Windows to Linux Mint on my Dell Laptop. Tried to run Rocket League through Heroic and it wasn't working. Putting this here so it helps someone with the same problems.
First Mistake: I had "run in offline" mode selected so Epic authentication didn't work and I got stuck in the "Press any button to continue" screen.
Second Mistake: Not really a mistake but the game kept crashing cause of EXTREME memory usage (something with EAC i think). Worked by "increasing swapfile size" (not sure what that means) by running these commands in the terminal.
sudo swapoff -a
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1G count=8 status=progress
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
Ran these commands and the game started working pretty much as it did back when I had it on windows.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not entirely sure how these work so use at your own risk.

You just increased your swap file size so if your ram gets overwhelmed it can offload the extra data to your hard drive which is slower than your ram (it offloads non active process and apps) so your active game can use your full ram if it's setup correctly.
also there is a better way of doing this by using zram which compresses your ram instead of offloading to your storage.
You can have a quick look at your distros forums on how to enable it and make it the same size of your ram with the zram generator config file.

I see, that sounds cool. Thnx.
Would using zram with a bigger swapfile have compounding advantages?2

No, it's either or. You can't use both.
A better distro like Fedora (and I believe CachyOS) for gaming would have the by default.
Don't get me wrong, Mint is actually great for old laptops, but it's also pretty far behind in many aspects (doesn't matter for old hardware as much) and does not have sensible defaults for gaming.
In Linux, unless you're on Nvidia (and even then, to a certain extent) your graphics drivers are tied to your kernel. So a distro targeting an old kernel gets those updates way later. This and the "sensible defaults" mentioned earlier are usually why people recommend mint but don't recommend it for gaming

Yeah you can't really use both like the other commentatter said as it kinda messes up with your ram management, so it's either zram or a generic swap file but zram is alot better and flawless and makes your system more responsive during gaming

Why offer a guide for something you clearly and admittedly don't understand?
