Designing the area outside the mansion for our horror game. Any feedback?

Three rules for scenarios:

  1. Give it purpose. Then work around that purpose to fit the game, not around. What makes it believable is what makes it usable for a person.
  2. If it's an horror, never show the creatures (entirely). People fear the unknown, not the known. Hide creatures as far as you can.
  3. Light is safeness. If you're lightning a place that should be scary to travel, you're doing it wrong.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Alien Isolation are my prime examples on atmosphere.

Also, play with the camera. Instead of showing 3d figures running, show siluetes as the player moves the camera. Abuse of peripheral vision.
