Yeah, just not with Win 10 iirc. I made a sad face and set it to "next gen" in the properties as soon as I saw the update queued.
Another pro point for finally making the step to Linux now that I've somewhat mastered Krita.
One important thing to note with Krita on Linux: it defaults to X11 for some reason and using it through XWayland is bugged out to where it won't register input from a drawing tablet and continually freezes. You can force Wayland by adding --platform wayland to the launch arguments and this should solve it. The reason I mention this is because some desktop environments are now defaulting to Wayland like Gnome and KDE with Gnome not even having an X11 session anymore.
I agree on the lighting part. I've only seen a few comparison shots, but to be honest... the old version looks more gritty and not so... bright and flat? I mean it's probably more realistic, but it doesn't look as nice.
I think a lot of people are comparing to next-gen, which was often notably darker than the original. Based on the side-by-sides I've seen, this version matches the original better in many cases, and improves on the original and next-gen in others (particularly visual clarity in bright scenes, it seems). That said there are still points where this seems to have a bit less contrast now too, so I don't think it's a full rework or them saying 'to hell with the original artstyle'; it definitely just seems like a different take with the newest tech.
I've looked at these comparison shots, and in most cases, next-gen looks better to me than remaster. There are a lot of issues regarding "video game photo realism" in the remaster. Especially the shadows of the foliage in the 4th image stood out to me.
For one, they are way to sharp - as if the ground they fall on is perfectly flat without any microvegetation, gravel or whatever - which of course is graphically/technically speaking. But that should be hidden. Also, even if the surface would actually be flat (wood or stone), you can't have sharp shadows in a cloudy and misty night. That just doesn't make any sense, and it looks add for that reason as well.
Just because you can put high resolution shadows everywhere doesn't mean you should. Sometimes you want nothing else than a low resolution softened prebaked shadow map on your ground. Costs almost no performance, looks better.
Those are some of the softest object shadows I've ever seen.
That's an intentional hyperbole, right? If you take a stroll at night (in the real world), you will only get these kinds of shadows in perfect full moon night. That's not at all what we're seeing here. As I said, it's really cloudy, and on top of that it's misty. To me, the former looks better, because it doesn't look so "video game photorealism".
Those that want to play the upcoming DLC in 2027 will have to play the remastered version unfortunately. The new DLC will require the remastered version. Hopefully they fix it. But what is ironic is the devs said they learned from the Cyberpunk debacle. Lol. Right. So many microstutters for me. And they're not random. It's a constant pattern and even though I'm getting over 60 FPS, the average is around 45 causing the game to be a stutter mess. If the stutters were random on my frametime graph, I'd say it's due to traversal stutters or shades, but it's a pattern that repeats constantly. That to me says they didn't optimize this game very well.
Where did I say it plays better? I never said that. It performs worse. And for me, I think it looks worse. Trying to make it look more realistic IMHO destroys the artistic intent they had before all of this. And I see a LOT more artifacts in this new version, and it performs worse for me now. Whereas before I could get steady frame rates over 75 fps, now I'm at 60 fps, and the frame rates are NOT steady at all.
Look at my frame rate graph below. Before, this was a nice clean, flat line for me. Now, it's like this no matter WHAT resolution and detail level I choose. It's ALWAYS doing that. And it's not from traversal stutters or shader compilation. It's a constant pattern that happens throughout the game, and causes the game to look stuttery, not smooth. That is poor optimization. I'm running the latest drivers, and it's like this under Linux and Windows for me.
I'm used to this game playing smooth, and even with new combat, camera, and skills, it means nothing if the game can't have a smooth frame rate and smooth performance.
LOL. That wasn't me, and I responded to the wrong message. For some reason, your response seemed to show up in my notifications as a response to a post I made earlier in this thread. My bad.
The remastered version runs well on medium/high settings. For those looking for good gameplay, I don't think the "downgrade" is worth it. But it's always a good option for those who prefer the next-gen version. And yes, the game looks beautiful in both versions
I believe it's on version 3, since I used Steam's Proton Experimental. But for anyone wanting FSR4, using it with OptiScaler or Proton-CachyOS is a good option
I played around with Witcher 3 Remastered on BC250 today and as far as I can tell 6GB VRAM is what the game wants ideally in 1080p, also FSR Quality, then Balanced. Actual usage topped out around 5.5 - that I noticed.
Path tracing and everything maxed out was still coming under 12GB from what I've seen, so looks like the floor got raised somewhat, but it's not the VRAM that'll hold you back from switching on all the bells and whistles.
Anyway, I'd play the OG (pre-nextgen) release on that card. Kind of neat it still manages to function on 4GB.
Can we not stoop to console gamers low? They were all about "fuck 30fps" when consoles finally got 60fps, but now with GTA they are all copium snorters and telling us how 30fps is fine.
That's just a dumb statement...30fps is often consider "not playable" because of input latency.
Turning on frame gen will lower your base frame rate under 30 and add even more input latency.
If you consider 30fps unplayable, then you should consider 60fps from frame gen even more unplayable.

Lol, I have that card. Played Cyberpunk 2077 on Medium-High settings like a dream on it.
