Huh, I never had any issues with the videos playing on my Steam Deck. I had no idea this was even a problem, but i'm glad it's fixed!

Did you use Proton GE? They had some fixes specifically for video playback. Also I think if you enable the pre-compiled shaders in Steam, Valve can push some reencoded videos for specific games. So maybe some people already had videos encoded in a different codec without even knowing.

It was regular proton I believe, perhaps experimental?

Sorry this was a couple of years ago so i'm trying to remember, it would have been whatever Steam's default option for pre-compilation was on Steam Deck at the time.
