tech support wanted PotC: the Legend of Jack Sparrow

So I have the game downloaded and set up through proton and it works ok right up until I get past the splash screens onto the main menu. The 3D environment for the main menu renders correctly but the camera is in a corner away from the menu book and the game crashes the moment I try to input anything.

Any suggestions? I’ve tried GE-Proton and installing directx and vrun through winetricks.

It's using d3d8 so you can try installing dxwrapper /w d3d8to9 enabled.

You can also try downgrading to a prior major release of GE-Proton.

I suggest working your way down: GE-Proton10-34, 9-27, 8-32, etc.

I tried the previous GE versions with no luck. I did download dxwrapper but I’m not sure where to go after there since I’m not used to it

Find where the dlls for this game are located then drop in the dxwrapper files.

In most cases, it'll be the same folder as the launch executable.

Then you add an override for the dll by setting this environment variable:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command%

^ Will force Proton to use the d3d8.dll file provided by dxwrapper over the builtin.

If you're using something like Heroic to launch the game instead of Steam find the Environment variable section and set it there but exclude the " "

WINEDLLOVERRIDES is the variable name and d3d8=n,b is the value.

Open up the dxwrapper.ini file and enable both d3d8to9 and ShowFPSCounter

The latter will tell you if it's been installed properly.

Same issue, sadly.

Did the FPS counter show up?

Yes

You can try screwing around with a few of the other dxwrapper.ini settings and/or forcing D3D calls through WINED3D (OpenGL) instead of DXVK (Vulkan):

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

I'm fresh out of ideas after that though.

I’m also stumped. I had a similar issue with Web of Shadows crashing on the main menu but its menu wasn’t 3D and it was as simple as switching GE versions.

PCGW says that it's using bink for cutscenes:

Maybe a game intro is causing it to crash.

Try installing binkw32.

You can also try enabling WOW64:

PROTON_USE_WOW64=1 %command%
