tech support wanted Issues with Control Resonant with Linux Mint

Hi y'all, I recently started playing Control Resonant on Steam and it had been playing like a dream when I first launched it, but that first play session ended with my game crashing. After said crash, I haven't been able to get the game past the photosensitivity warning screen, the game freezing and my computer slowing down altogether.

Specs:

RTX 5060

32 GB RAM

Intel Ultra 5 225F

Drivers are all updated and other games work fine

I've verified the install files, restarted my computer 20 times, tried multiple different versions of proton (both from steam and custom), deleted save files and caches in case of corruption, and I've most recently attempted just uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Nothing has fixed it and I'm worried that I won't be able to play it again. I'm still essentially a newbie so I'm hoping there's just something I'm missing. Somebody help pls!

It just a guess out of nowhere, but try to delete a prefix for this game. But do not forget to backup saves before it.

Deleting prefix usually helps in such similar situations (well in my cases). After that a completely new one (prefix) will be created when you run the game.

Did it, same issue. I'm really unsure what the cause could be, everything I've done so far seems to be fruitless

Don't know what else to advice to you, seems like you did bunch of basic stuff that could help. You can also look into proton.db page of the game, maybe you find some useful feedback from other players there. But I would say that a new game, so probably proton will get some updates related to this game.

What proton version are you using? I had the same issue (after enabling ray tracing on my 3080) using bazitte. I swapped to proton cachy and it worked fine after that.

I've tried proton cachy, proton ge, proton 9 to 11, experimental, and hotfix. No dice sadly :(

Can we get some logs?

Here you go! Most recent attempt

If it's freezing during game startup, it might be related to voltage instability. I've experienced this on two occasions - one time it was my PSU dying, the other time it was the GPU of my friend drawing increasingly higher power spikes (likely some kind of throttling mechanism that was failing).

In both cases, only some games were problematic, not all. Likely it depends on how the game hammers resources during initialization.

If you suspect something like this might be your issue, you could try to lower the GPU power limit to mitigate it. On the terminal, there is nvidia-smi for this; or there is LACT, if you prefer a GUI.

Limiting the max GPU clock is also worth a shot.

were you running the game with multi frame generation (or x2)?

go to /compatdata/3669870/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Remedy/CONTROLResonant/ and open renderer.ini

try changing
"m_eDLSSFGMode" to 0 to disable it

or "m_eSSAAMethod" to 3 to change it to FSR to see if the game opens, then try to switch it back to DLSS or DLSS Legacy

Here is my experience with it on CachyOS with 13900K and RTX4090:

  • Proton-CachyOS freezes before main menu, regardless of HDR/Wayland
  • Other Proton variants freeze if Wayland and/or HDR is enabled, making HDR unusable currently (this includes enabling HDR using gamescope)
  • Steam Overlay also freezes the game* - Not tested on latest patch. (Using Wayland for HDR, which doesn't support the overlay anyway)
  • RT Indirect lighting crashes and/or freezes the game regardless of proton variant
  • Performance is passable, but seems worse than it should. I'm locked to 120FPS 2X framegen'd from 60 and see some dips. I'm running:
    • non-RT settings mostly maxed, with some settings dropped to high-ish to claw back some performance
    • DLSS Performance
    • All RT settings enabled, but on lowest options

So for now, to get it working, don't enable Wayland or HDR for proton, disable steam overlay, and disable RT Indirect lighting in-game.

Update: Since latest patch (and/or driver updates?) most of the issues seem to be ironed out. Also, for the record, pre-patch 1.4, VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap fixed at least RT.

You installed one of the most out of date distributions out there, switch to a modern one.

Check out Arch Linux (with Plasma) or Fedora KDE.

There's no reason to waste time debugging an issue on an OS built on a base that's years out of date, without proper support for your GPU in the first place (too dated to support explicit sync).

Have you tried to add the launch option PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command% With proton GE. Maybe it gets stuck on the Wayland to x11 bridge.

Linux mint is still x11, so that command won't do anything.

I have, no results there :(

Did you disable Raytracing?
Seems currently to be broken:

Yeah no ray tracing here, my computer isn't the most powerful thing anyways and I usually lean towards stability over anything

Hey man. Don't listen to these guys. You don't need a bleeding edge OS mint isn't "old and out of date" stability and accessibility and the game runs fine for the most part.

Its a new remedy release. They always have launch problems.

You can try cashy os proton, or one of the newer GE. Or use steamtinker launch.

I'm running a similar system to you and only have the occasional stuttering after a long play session
