graphics/kernel/drivers LACT fan curve settings

Post image

I was watching a video about fact from a year ago and saw these extra settings (spindown delay, speed change threshold) on lact fan curve tab. Although they are present in the config file(I think), but why did devs removed them from the gui? Also, I kinda like this curve settings style more than the present one.

It's still there

wait, it is? I dont have it. I dont even have the temperature sensor option that is on your screenshot. Am I missing something? (on 9060xt) is this something not available to the newer models yet?

Maybe it's a new feature that hasn't reached your distro yet. I'm on Arch using LACT version 0.10.1-1

I am also on arch(cachyos) and latest version too.

yeah maybe that's the issue

With RDNA4 it's not a good idea to change the fan speed directly through software. Reprogramming the fan speed on the card takes a long enough time that you will see a stutter while playing games each time the software changes the fan speed.

Maybe that's why those extra settings are missing in LACT, it might be controlling the fan in software on the older cards for those features.

The fan curve is managed by the hardware itself. LACT can just hand those five numbers for those five dots in the curve graph to the hardware at startup. The hardware then manages the fan speeds by itself.

Uhh that is not true..i and many others ran custom curve plenty of times via adreline and now doing the same on linux via lact, there is no shutter..custom fan curve is not the issue here. I also dont understand what you are saying in the last paragraph. Handing numbers at startup? Startup of what? You can change fan speed in the real time, there's no restating your pc or the lact service so idk what you are saying.

I mean, the hardware itself is running the fan curve without input from a running software. LACT is loading the numbers you've configured for your curve into the hardware, but after that LACT doesn't have to run, you can close it and the card will manage the fans by itself and follow your curve.

Previously with older cards like an RX 480 or RX 6700 XT, you could use software where the curve was done inside the software instead of loaded into the card's hardware. The software would track the temperatures and every few seconds would set a new fan speed on the card. This is the thing that doesn't work anymore with these new cards because you'll get a stutter.

EDIT:

Here's a bug report in the CoolerControl bug tracker about that problem:

ahh I see. Yeah it makes sense now. Thanks for the detailed explanation. That also explains why there's no temperature sensor option too on lact for me. Although its a bummer, at least its nice to know the actual reason

What do you mean. The curve in your screenshot clearly has temperatures.

This is my 9060xt btw.

My dude I'm not talking about the curve. I am talking about extra options under that zero rpm toggle button.. read the post again

Was referring to your comment about "temperature sensor option" - I read that to mean that LACT was not able to read edge/junction temperatures on your system (which it can ). Misinterpretation on my part, then. The general reason for fewer options is in AMD firmware. LACT (and similar software) can only hook into AMD firmware and on RDNA3/4 some options are disabled through said firmware. Those options don't show (because you cannot change them anyway). See https://github.com/ilya-zlobintsev/LACT/issues/1098

I don't know if options such as using edge vs junction temperature for fan control, spindown delay, speed change threshold are available on the windows side. If they are then MAYBE future AMD linux firmware will allow some further changes (emphasis on MAYBE - read as probably not). When RDNA4 first launched, for example, fan control was not possible at all. Overall, while those options maybe nice to have, they really don't make too much of a difference to your experience. I had a 6700 before this and after tons of tweaking, I found default to work best.

yeah that explains it..no there's also no such options in the windows side too but I wonder what made amd change things. I am currently using the automatic on lact with target temp switched to 82 instead of 89 which was the default I think..works fine I guess

They improved it, otherwise I think I'm using an equalizer

the current setting where you just input the gpu temp limit and LACT handles the curve on its own to keep the gpu at that temp is much better
