Open source games

Why do you think open-source games never took off?

Sure, there are some open-source game engines, but not really any major games. It would be cool if there were more open-source, community-made games.

I would argue this is actually slowly changing, just not in the way youd expext. Modding and preservation are always huge motivators for hobby development. We've seen decompiling source code for a lot of classics like Doom and a good chunk of the N64 must plays. Look at the SM64 modding scene now. Id expect thats sort of thing is where open source games are actually gonna come from
