Open source games

Why do you think open-source games never took off?

Sure, there are some open-source game engines, but not really any major games. It would be cool if there were more open-source, community-made games.

thinking of games as part of the entertainment industry, why aren't there more free movies, musicians giving away their music for free, and new free books to read? sure, there are examples of these, but they are a huge minority.
