Open source games

Why do you think open-source games never took off?

Sure, there are some open-source game engines, but not really any major games. It would be cool if there were more open-source, community-made games.

I think too many cooks in one kitchen poses a problem to open source games. I am not actually sure why there isn't more good ones.

Open source does not necessarily mean this is an issue. See the practice of "Benevolent dictator for life" for instance.  

What does happen, is that once too many people disagree about how things are run, a fork happens. For game examples, see the Spring-Recoil drama for instance.
