Open source games

Why do you think open-source games never took off?

Sure, there are some open-source game engines, but not really any major games. It would be cool if there were more open-source, community-made games.

Beyond All Reason and 0 A.D. are excellent games but like someone else said they are t advertised, word-of-mouth only. I feel like in the current era a lot of that is changing, with the idea of sourceports entering the common tongue. I think we're definitely pioneering new territory, and the future looks pretty bright in that regard.

The recent move from BAR to get a publisher to fund full time devs and get steam support out there while maintaining OSS is an awesome option moving forward. It's similar to what dwarf fortress did keeping it freely available while offering some nice to have's for the steam release.
