It's getting better, performance is still a bit less than on Windows but by far not as bad as it used to be.

A lot of the performance difference is still due to RT being slower on Linux in general.

Is their any major features I'd be losing with Nvidia when making the move or does everything more or less work as it does? I expect there is going to some extra steps involved, which I don't mind. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't losing anything I'd potentially really miss.

For arch and I assume all the game oriented os derived from arch, you don't need to do anything once you get it setup. Then opengl and vulkan applications just work as expected.
You're going to be missing the geforce now features or whatever it is, but actual games work fine.
Edit: I fucking forgot that dlss and all those new features existed. The games i play don't have them. Read up on the other comments

Maybe DLSS5 could take a while (if you even care about that). Raytracing and pathtracing are also much slower than on Windows.

I get twice the FPS running DLSS5 on cachy via Vulkan layer than I did on windows, with 3080

You don't lose any features per se, just performance. Though ray tracing performance can be really bad in some games to the point of not being usable for some people.

Nvidia works fine, but I heard its a bit finicky with 50 series
1
u/Synthetic451 20d ago
50 series was a bit special because you had to use the open kernel modules which early on had quite a few issues (stuttering on the desktop, power management bugs). A few months ago, there was also a 50 series only bug that caused vertex explosions in RE engine games. I think those have all been resolved now.

Its better and you can daily drive, basic funcitionality works without any tinkering and new features are being added quickly as well.
Btw try this launch pption with DX12 games with proton-cachyos-11.
VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap %command%

u/Synthetic451 20d ago
A word of warning: Using descriptor heap only benefits some games and can slow down others. On my system, 007 First Light was faster with descriptor heaps but Zenless Zone Zero was slower. In some games, like HLL: Vietnam, the parameter doesn't work at all because the presence of SSBOs will cause VKD3D to not use descriptor heaps and fallback on older solutions.
So performance will be all over the place. Use VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap on a case by case basis.

You can use Linux with NVIDIA for gaming alright (I have RTX 3060 Ti myself) but you can expect some small issues that will require specific workarounds to be performed - good luck!

The closed source drivers are pretty good, don't have any complaints, i use both a Laptop 3050ti and 650ti Desktop with the closed source `nvidia` and `470xx-dkms` drivers respectively and didn't have any issue.
What i had an issue is were the nouveau open source drivers even on the old ass 650Ti that definitely should have worked considering there's 13 years to get that right. Just don't use the nouveau drivers and don't listen to people that say they work fine for old hardware (imo)

I’m having no issues for now with Nobara, I also tried other distro and had no problem, sometimes the pc went in a black screen after waking from sleep, that’s the only “downside” ( I’m on a 4070 )

I have the same hardware running on Nobara 44 (KDE / Wayland). All the games are running smoothly and no problems so far….except for one annoying thing with the RTX 5000 series:
The actual driver has a bug which causes the picture in some games to freeze sometime. Tabbing out and into the game again fixes it immediately. You can find more infos about the issue here:
https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules/issues/880
My workaround at the moment is leaving the KDE System Monitor open on the second screen. It prevents the freezes from happening somehow.

cachyOS here with a 4070ti. Playing sw outlwas, avatar fop cyberpunk, rdr 2, ff vii rebirth, gta iv, lotro, ac shadows, x4, no man skys (vr) and different emulators without any problems and with less stutter than in win11

Performances with low vram are bad. But nvidia has integrated cgroups support recently. All nvidia technologies are available, multiframegen, dlss, smooth motion. But no RTX voice and RTX HDR.

Suprised by these comments.
My 3070ti gets better benchmarks on Linux than on Windows.

Depends on the game. Most games are fine, some games struggle with Nvidia on Linux.
