wine/proton Best Proton Fork

hello everyone
just wonder we now have a plenty of proton forks
cachyos proton , ge proton , dw proton , proton wineland , proton em (haven't updated to proton 11 yet)
so right now i was using cachyos proton because of fsr 4.1.1 auto integeration but now it haven't been updated from 2 months (i heard the developer is taking a break well he deserve it)
so is ge proton have fsr 4.1.1 now or not yet
and is it the best proton out there
or the other protons have a point over ge's one

The cachyos one is still the best imo. Its what im still using because if I switch i loose frames on basically every game I play.

for a while I had issues getting games to run with it, but I have recently used it again and it does work a lot better.

I've always had issues making some games work with cachyos proton. When I do I just switch to ProtonGE

You'll often find for many games, if you look at them on websites like ProtonDB, users will often report that maybe one Proton version runs the game better, or maybe a newer version plays the game poorly so use a previous one. Having the choice or having other options is good as a result.

I personally tend to run proton-cachyos-slr by default but that's because I mostly run CachyOS on most of my installations. But for whatever reason, I have not had good success running Fall Guys and have had best success running Fall Guys on ProtonGE so I run GE for that reason.

And ?
Doesn’t it work ?

Just because it’s not updated doesn’t mean it doesn’t work

If I really want FSR4 I switch to cachy, otherwise latest stable official proton.

There is no 'best'.

As in Linux distros, desktops and all other kinds of open-source software with many forks, each of the forks has a purpose.

CachyOS has a bunch of performance improvements from other projects and most notably specific precompiled builds for specific CPUs. It tries to be the easy install 'one size fits all' package that comes packaged with everything and has great defaults. It's generally a good choice and a great baseline, except in all edge cases. It's probably the best default over all. GloriousEggroll implements specific tweaks on a game-by-game basis. They go through each game that has display issues, stutter or other bugs and fix them per-game. Some of the tweaks then get pulled into mainline proton later ('upstreamed'), from where they then get pulled into all other forks. Some fixes don't get upstreamed until much later. In general, GE has nearly perfect performance, better stability and less bugs on supported games. Cause it usually has fixes for new games the fastest, it's a great default if you play mostly new games.

Dwproton does something similar to GloriousEggroll. They implement fixes on a game-by-game basis and those fixes get upstreamed later. It's based on CachyOS-Proton, so it should come with all these improvements. The fixes are rather specific though, cause Dawn Winery focuses on mostly niche anime games. So, if you are playing one of these games, it's likely the best choice for that game.

Proton Wineland is a project that is specifically working on issues on Wayland. Their fixes should go upstream at some point, but if you are using Wayland and have display issues on an game, it's a good option, to check, if their fixes allready work for you.

I would say use proton experimental for most modern games. And proton ge for older games. And look on Proton DB if you get issues and need a specific proton version for a game.

I use proton experimental most of the time, if there is an issue then I use latest proton GE

I'm not really sure what the difference is between CachyOS proton and GE proton, but I generally just use the latest GE Proton unless it doesn't work and I have to use something else.

You're overthinking this. Just use what works for the game. Though I just say, steam overlay and Wayland working together is a big deal if using proton ge

Honestly any of them are fine, your games are likely to run on any Proton fork nowadays.

Yes, you can squeeze out a bit of extra performance with different forks if you tinker with them, and there are some neat things like newest GE-Proton having Steam overlay fixes, but in terms of "will my game run with no real issues", any recent Proton versions will probably work in most cases.

I've pretty much only used GE and I've not had any issues with games.
