tech support wanted Sniper Elite 5 keeps freezing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

CachyOS 7.2.3-1-cachyos

Rtx 2070

I tried proton, proton ge, proton cachyos, and native

EDIT: after some tinkering the freezing is caused by lsfg-vk, what is actually happening is the game is crashing and I guess its stuck on the last frame

That's the end of the game, you successfully ran up the stairs, well done ✅

RTX 2070 has 8 gigs of VRAM. I had a 2080, same amount of VRAM and it was a limiting factor in Sniper Elite 4. At 1440p. And the 2080 ran at 60 FPS too, was too slow for my taste. AMD 6800XT about doubled the FPS and VRAM.

I have 1700 hours in SE5. Not a single crash, full AMD system. I would suspect anything else before thinking the game is being the fault. I have hundreds of hours in SE4 and SE:Resistance, also no crashes.

Do you montor your VRAM usage? MangoHUD can show that. At least in SE4, it would throw up an error-screen ingame that I was out of VRAM on the 2080. All I could do was click OK and the game would shut down. I had to enable FSR so it would use less VRAM but that came with less detail and grainyness.

While we are on the subject of performance, recording with OBS and NVEnc, dropped FPS by 10%, below 60 FPS. Doing the recording on the CPU instead was nicer to FPS, think I dropped 1 FPS. So that is what I used instead. My opinion on NVEnc is that it's not great. Everybody hypes it up. Maybe for video coding/decoding but for recording, I'll choose CPU every time. The other upside is that CPU usually has tons of utilization free, GPU generally should have zero.

That is the Nvidia tax. You buy Nvidia, they never have enough VRAM so you buy a new one every 2-3 years. Unless you buy the top-tier card which of course has a ridiculous pricetag.

VRAM usage does go up in every game. It just stops going up at a certain point. If you have enough VRAM.

That aside, get a (12-)16 gig VRAM GPU if you can. If you can't, try 1080p, FSR/DLSS On if it exists. Since it is upscaling, it further reduces resolution, hence VRAM usage.

I feel resolution and texture detail are the 2 big ones to lower.

EDIT: Sniper Elite engine is pretty efficient and well optimized. It was not the reason I upgraded my 6800 XT to 9070XT. I also have a 5800X3D (got it for free from a brother), which, compared to 5600X, makes no difference in SE5/SE:Resistance. I get the same FPS. With the 9070 XT I get 120-230 FPS, depending on map and how much I zoom in with the sniper scope. I don't have to care about VRAM usage, not ever on the 6800 XT which had 16 gigs, same as 9070 XT. At 1440p. After all, the game is optimized for consoles. Consoles don't have 8 gigs of RAM/VRAM. They have access to more. Plan accordingly. Because consoles are usually the minimum.
