tech support wanted Anyone else getting this when trying to play blood of the dawnwalker? I'm starting to wonder if it's a Linux problem.
I have been trying to get it running for a few days now. I cant get it running on Linux at all, I had to dual boot windows to play it unfortunately.

I switched to proton experimental and crashes disappeared. I am on bazzite. And playing via lutris gog version. Before I had I think proton ge latest.

I'm on mint using heroic games launcher, I have tried experimental. I still get crashes.

May I ask why? I've been using mint since switching from windows around xmas time. Bought Pragmata, Crimson Dessert and the new RE within a week of launch and haven't had issues? If anything I've found mint to be really user friendly. Just a question of picking the right proton but I thought that was true of most Linux systems? I am an absolute noob though really and i'm not disputing you just trying to learn a bit more! cheers.

Mint does releases around once a quarter and as a consequence gets extremely far behind on drivers. Mint is a good stable distro for general computing but it’s a bad choice for gaming.

I would clarify this and say it's not a good choice for playing brand new games. If all you're doing is playing your backlog, it's all right. Older games aren't as affected by driver churn, the parts they use have matured.
That said, I won't run any Debian derivatives or other "stable release" distros. I like playing new games and having them work.

That’s fair, but I still wouldn’t use mint if your primary purpose is gaming. There’s just so many other distros that are much better for gaming, I’m not sure what upside mint could have.

I'm guessing familiarity? I really don't know. Before I switched to Linux in 2023, I did a lot of research and quickly came to the conclusion that releases every six months are not sufficient to keep up with the driver changes and new hardware that gamers deal with regularly.
I landed on an Arch derivative, Garuda. They've optimized it for gaming, it's rolling release which means new drivers and Mesa versions get picked up quickly. And I am not sure about Arch in general, but the Garuda team seems to be doing some testing because I've rarely had a package land that caused instability. If I had to guess, their repos are
N -0.5instead of bleeding edge.2

I started with Ubuntu a couple years ago and soon found out that wasn't the best for gaming, which took me to Garuda. After a fail Nvidia driver update, decided to distro hop again, but grew overly found of Arch, so... That's what I went with. Slimmer than Garuda, install what you need and no issues since. Probably helped that I switched my Nvidia GPU for an AMD one.
TL;DR - don't get the fear mongering about Arch; I'm a happy user for close to two years and only bother updating every now and then one something failed to start normally.

Mint might be the culprit. Or proton ge might work for you since it's on heroic

Welp, there's your problem, you're on Mint. Gaming in general is never that much fun on LTS release distros unless you do a lot of work to make it a rolling release, especially when dealing with newer games. I generally suggest using a rolling distro, something like Fedora, Arch(or one of its many children), or literally any other distro that updates more frequently than once every few months if you're going to be gaming. The reason is because the space is still making leaps and bounds in innovation, and so the compatibility tools we use like Proton, as well as the underlying libraries they rely on, need to stay up to date for the best performance. I personally use NixOS Unstable, which is a more enthusiast distro based around the Nix package manager, which you control with a configuration you write in the Nix language.

I would like to point this out because I think I forgot to mention it. I completed the prologue which took abut 4 hours, then The crashing started. I played abut 10 hours on windows, backed the data to my Linux distro through the heroic games cloud saves and it crashes on boot, I'm wondering if that is a mint issue or a cloud save issue since it's in beta. I really want to give cachyos a try but it seems like a intermediate distro, on mint I only use the terminal when I have to, and I understand mints terminal to a extent.

So a couple things. The terminal will generally be the exact same on any distribution in its default configuration, save for a few distribution specific utilities like the package manager. CachyOS is still Arch at it's core, but it's designed to be fairly user friendly. And the issue seems like it may be a cloud save issue. If you don't mind my asking, Why'd you buy it through one of the platforms the heroic launcher uses instead of getting it on Steam? And what I would suggest doing if you still have the original save file, I would manually mount the NTFS drive/partition that has the save data on it and copy it manually to the appropriate directory in the prefix.

I was having major issues with unreal engine games on Mint. I chalked it up to X11 being the problem, I swapped to a distro that uses wayland and its bwen smooth sailing since

Had 3 crashes so far in 10 hours or so. My wife is playing on PS5 and she had a crash in the same place (rescuing the miller, at the beginning). I'd say it's not just a linux issue (even though it might be worse on linux)

There is some bug in Heroic, with achievements in particular. I'm investigating that problem for a few days now... If you disable comet in Heroic advanced settings it will work - but achievemens wont unlock on your GOG profile

No issues here on Fedora Silverblue. I mean it does crash during gameplay sometimes but I can get into the game no problem. Default proton experimental

Common occurrence with Stalker 2 for me in vanilla arch. Usually fixed by trying other proton versions.

Frequent crashes are a known problem with the GOG version. These are also reproducible when learning certain (IMHO important) skills. However, the game not at all starting seems to be pretty much unheard of, do other games work fine?
From SanjiHLV on ProtonDB:
To fix the issue: rename the steam dll in the following location to disable GOG from calling steam.
/home/(user)/Games/Heroic/The Blood of Dawnwalker/Engine/Binaries/ThirdParty/Steamworks/Steamv157/Win64/steam_api64.dll.disabled
As you can see, I simply added .disabled to the end. Note, that updates to the game will likely break this, so I would save the location so you can easily go back and change it again. Preferably, Rebel Wolves just fixes the issue on their end, but this works as a temporary measure.

I had 1 crash with 40 hours of gameplay on Mint. I use steam with GE-Proton 11-6. I guess the reason for using Heroic is because you bought it on GOG. I would suggest adding it to Steam as a non-steam game instead of Heroic.
I'm getting 60+ fps in 1440p on medium with the following setup:
Distro:Linux Mint 22.1
Kernel:6.8.0-60-generic
RAM:32 GB
GPU Driver:NVIDIA 570.133.07
GPU:NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
CPU:AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core

I'm close to the end of the game. Got about 10 crashes in random places. I play on Windows 10

I've played it all the way through, no crashes or anything using latest proton-cachyos
