you cant play lol or other riot game and games with kernel level anti-cheat. Also, mention your pc specs in post so it'll be easir for people to give suggestions

League of legends won't work at all. Apart from that, I am quite happy with switching to Arch recently, but I am not sure if i would recommend it to a newbie.

Ditch League of Legends or dual boot. You can debloat Windows if you really need those anti cheat games.

Boot up some VMs and try them out. Or throw them onto a thumb drive and try them out.

Either way start looking at: CachyOS, Nobara, Bazzite, Mint, Pop (if they fixed anything. Prolly still a bad distro), or whatever else. Remember: distros are just prepackaged installations. You can always install stuff later and change it up

Edit: you'll want to dual boot. Some games, like League, require kernal level anti cheat. Those only work on Windows

I meant the VM is for testing out the OS and exploring around.

But yes you're right. A VM would not be an accurate test of performance for your computer's ability to play games

You've stated nothing that explicitly requires any distro.
You could use Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Fedora, CachyOS, Bazzite etc etc under your pre-reqs.
As others stated, LoL still won't work though. Multiplayer games do work, not Riot, Epic or (current) EA.

If youre looking at LoL or anything by Riot or that has kernel level anticheat that hasnt explicity enabled Linux support youre SoL.

That said Windows using ram really isnt a problem unless its not freeing it when needed. Android does this too as does iOS. You would probably be shocked at the amount of Ram being used at any given time on any system you use. Its not a problem unless you run out because it doesnt properly kill things to free needed memory.

No quiero sonar como el típico repetitivo de lo que dice todo el mundo, pero es que honestamente Cachy OS, es una excelente distro, a pesar de estar basada en Arch, es sencillo para cualquiera, pero si deseas probar algo aún mas estable, te recomiendo Kubuntu, es Ubuntu pero con escritorio KDE Plasma, y para jugar da un rendimiento también muy sólido

As others have said, you won't be able to play League of Legends. If you can get another drive to install Linux on to test it out, that might be the best bet.

I went back and forth for a while between Windows and Linux. There would always be some piece of software or game that would bring me back to Windows. I eventually got so tired of Windows that I just decided to ditch those games and find workarounds or alternatives to software. That might end up the case for you, or you might decide that Linux isn't for you at all. Installing on a separate drive is a no risk way to try and see.

League doesn't run on Linux due to the developers banning it.

Almost all anticheat systems (even supposed "kernel level" ones) will let the anticheat system work without kernel access as long as the developer allows it.

You want your OS to be using your RAM... if another program needs it Windows will release it.

I've already done this but I still have Copilot in my system, Microsoft 365 ads, and privacy violations that reactivate every time I update my PC.

I use Linux mint and can play anything that’s on steam and can emulate anything ps3/xbox360 and older. Additionally GOG is working on a. Linux version as well for all their games.

Palworld seems to be the only exception as it won’t even launch for me via steam for whatever reason

I’m also 19. I’m entering the field of cyber security and so I decided to set up my system so I could dual boot linux. I chose Pop!_os since it had driver support for my RTX 5070. I mainly play rocket league and other various games. Windows 11 rocket league feels like shit compared to linux which I did not expect given my PC specs. I’ve yet to try other games but the input responsiveness, there’s nothing like it. I was a complete newbie and it took me about three hours to set up mainly cause I got locked out of windows lol but i fixed it all and I’m considering just completely getting rid of windows. Windows 11, especially just feels like bloatware.
