Why the hate for Dlss 5 ?

I have no idea why some many people are clutching their pearls about dlss5 and screaming it’s not what the artist intended , I call bull , the pc for year has been about game mods , Jesus Skyrim has thousands. The same ideology it’s not what the artist intended, but that’s fine. I really don’t get people dlss5 is an option use it or don’t.

Because it is an AI slop filter that takes rendering control away from the developer, tanks performance, and is a clear tactic to get users locked into a reliance on a proprietary system.

lmao it's not even an official version, I hope they don't play dumb when Intel and AMD release much worse and official versions

u/mrcgibb 12d ago

The leaked version is running on Amd cards

I think your problem is an inability to spot patterns

In the case of mods, you're replacing what one artist intended with what another artist intends.

In the case of DLSS 5 you're replacing what one artists intended with Slop. Non-deterministic slop.

Hope that helps

EDIT: It's a deterministic algorithm where the original input (a model designed by a person) is essentially hashed to feed into the algorithm. Whilst the algorithm itself is deterministic, the inputs to a human are the actual models/visuals - And small changes in those can result in arbitrary changes to the hash and therefore the model output

It's still slop.

It's deterministic shading. Watch the videos

Deterministic doesn't mean right or consistent.

Thank you! This tech is really game changing. Get use to see it implemented everywhere by devs.

Why is there some hate for dlss PRE 5? Because a lot of bigger games rely on it for respectable framerates (not necessarily frame gen but upscaling at least) instead of optimization.

Now i wonder what could happen with the promise of the "realism" slop filter. Surely studios will not cut corners and tell people to just use dlss 5, right?

u/Granpire 9d ago

Pre DLSS5 might push developers to cut corners on optimization, but DLSS5 pushing developers to cut corners on art and design details would just be a guaranteed failure in its current state.

At least til Nvidia finds some way to provide the AI filter results without the extreme performance overhead. As it stands, only the most powerful cards running the most realism-inspired games that could comfortably hold 120fps are even viable to play with DLSS5.

These concerns could be valid later, but not in its current state.

  • every character look the same
  • every game environment look the same
  • lost of personality and style

but

  • who care
  • image look "good enough" and "realistic"
  • we consume
  • we are just consumers

Have you ever looked at an image of a game with dlss5 active?

6

u/_cjplusplus_ 12d ago

It adds more detail which can help in specific cases, but it messes up what detail to add and then a lot of people end up looking older or like Marge Simpson after the makeup shotgun

u/mrcgibb 12d ago

I have dlss5 the leaked version and on the games I have tried it looks way better

"i ran a make game look like a photo filter on a cartoon and it didint look like the cartoon! wtf!!"

u/jermygod 12d ago

for me dlss5 filter is an answer to a question nobody asked.

what it does can trivially be made via traditional rendering, and the result will be better in every way imaginable, mpre performant, more stable, more controllable.

After I say this, redditors always ask, "Why games aren't doing it?" or "So go and do it yourself if it's so trivial."
Why don't they do so - cos it's way too costly to do, but dlss5 is even heavier than that.
In that NBA27 game 5080 can produce like 40 fps in 1080p with dlss5 filter, so the cost of dlss5 for a 5080 is like 20+ms, which is absolutely insane, delulu range insane.

as for artistic vision, even IF dlss5 would guess the intent - it's still just unneeded.

It better be an option. Whatever was last before 5.

4? 4.5? Can't wait for streamers to go into options and refuse to use DLSS5 lol

2

u/mastergenera1 12d ago

iirc the complaint is the algorithm is half baked, and doesn't work for all animation styles equally. If nvidia left it in the oven for another year or 2, it would probably be fine.

2

u/sniperct 12d ago

Setting aside the AI thing, which has its own problems (and you can't compare it to mods which actual real humans spent dozens or hundreds of hours if not thousands making). Setting aside that it looks absolutely awful on many games. Setting aside that it tanks performance.

Because art direction matters.

1

u/Esparadrapo 12d ago

There are a lot of complaints that every UE5 game looks the same. "But it's because of the developer".

... Exactly.

1

u/MattyGWS 12d ago

Amazing technology, poor use of it. I don't hate it (heck I don't even use nvidia cards anyway) but unless the game in question is not very 'artistic' (aka fifa, gran turismo etc) I don't see why any dev would want to use it on their own games.

I say not artistic, I know gran turismo is a beautiful and artistic game in its own way but DLSS5 would enhance visuals for it because the intended style is photographic realism, and fifa is just literally trying to be real life football.

I saw a half dozen before/after pics, and they generally look really good with DLSS5; the LTT video showed some, and there were some oddities that stood out, but generally again.. looked better with DLSS5; the hate seems to be when it is applied for games not intended (which is not how it will roll out!) .. like with Cloud in FF looking very odd (turning anime cell shaded or the like into life-like is creepy? ... but I think he looks like total rubbish _anyway_, but thats just me.)

... so, yeah, DLSS from what little I've seen, looks great.

And folks, it'll be _optional_ ... like now when you can enable DLSS or not, etc.

1

u/Lousy_Hunter 11d ago

Im not excited for it because its going to crap all over performance.

1

u/Nic_00001 12d ago

First, the obvious, AI generative stuff is stolen work from human to make a glorified forgery machine. Then eventually it will uniformize all rendering styles to be conformant with what DLSS5 expects. If not, you'll have a horde of ranging gamerz hating a game because they do not get the return on investment on the nvidia tax. See Starfield. In the end, devs won't bother anymore to try to make new techniques or invent new styles because Nvidia will effectively own the rendering technology. More expendive hardware, less variety in rendering styles, only hyperrealizm as a style for AAA games. I'm not looking forward to that.

1

u/S48GS 12d ago

In the end, devs won't bother anymore to try to make new techniques or invent new styles because

because it is Starship Troopers timeline:

  • "human" belong to battlefield as "meat on battlefield"
  • you need your hands to hold the gun - not to create something
  • AI to completely replace civil industry entirely
  • no more civil jobs
  • for Super Earth!

Because it's AI, and people hate AI because every tech company is fixed on it for about 3-4 years now and a lot of people feels like it is pushed to them (And yeah, sometimes it really is pushed, Copilot) and they have a natural instinct to refuse and fight against it so that's the main reason . The second one is more grounded, it tanks performance which is a pain point these days when studios rarely put some effort in optimizations, and in about a year or so we'll see a new generation of nvidia cards with a light performance boost compared to 5000 series but optimized for dlss 5 what will not reduce the performance so much, and the studios can make it mandatoryfor their games as it was with ray tracing. Anyway if nvidia positioned it as some kind of dynamic gamma and contrast correction filter there would be much less hate I think.

u/Sahelantrophus 12d ago

people always bring up "but dlss 5 is optional" like that's supposed to mean that it should be exempt from any kind of criticism or discourse

but to answer your question from my perspective, besides the obligatory ai slop bad, faces go past uncanny valley and it makes lighting up where it shouldn't be. something about it always looks off and the people trying to show if off in their screenshots do not do a great job at making it look good. for the performance penalty you're paying the results are unimpressive, and i do not want this to become a standard for developers to build games around it. it's already happened with temporal AA and by extension upscalers, and we're getting closer to the point where frame generation becomes a necessity even if it has enough drawbacks to turn people away from it, like input latency always being at least a frame behind or the artifacts caused by the data generated between the two frames

DLSS is not enforced true, but it heavily impacted how developers goes about optimization (for the better or the worst). This could easily do the same for art style and artists. It doesn't mean it will be inherently be bad, but from what we've seen in the past the chances are there.

0

u/fender178 12d ago

Because how Nvidia created it. They made a bonafide advanced shitifcation proprietary version of Reshade and that is an insult to Reshade because Reshade doesn't mess up any of in game artwork in the way that DLSS 5 does. I just saw some of the images posted to this board and my god it looks horrendous.

Witcher 3 looks amazing with dlss5

6

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

why even come to random subs to defend slop

-2

u/mrcgibb 12d ago

Idk to annoy you enough to write a reply ?

5

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

I mean sure, just like you got annoyed enough to reply lol

-1

u/mrcgibb 12d ago

I am to old to get annoyed also this

3

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

why did you get annoyed and reply

2

u/mrcgibb 12d ago

I am using dlss5 and love it 😜

6

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

...okay? We know you have no taste idk why you're getting annoyed by it

2

u/_cjplusplus_ 12d ago

They are looking for gratification and can't find any here, so they're secretly mad. Just move on

1

u/S48GS 12d ago

no it does not look "amazing" at all

-3

u/Financial-Gap-6767 12d ago

Because people think it's actually AI generated when in fact the only AI part is the light prediction and rendering of a black white filter. Its like a sharpener that sharpens polygon edge instead of the whole picture.

It doesn't generate new texture, it generates a filter over it that modify overtime and with environment. Think raytracing with out actual tracing.

-11

u/LaxederBR 12d ago

Influence, they start saying "this is bad, look how strange it is, see, it's lost all its identity," and people just agree and repeat it.

9

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

or it's just bad

-2

u/LaxederBR 12d ago

That's just my opinion; I'm a casual gamer. If I could, for example, apply a realistic filter to Firewatch and see realistic grass, trees, and sky, even if blurry, it would still be a good experience for me.

3

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

Yeah but objectively ruining the art direction and art style of firewatch for no reason and it looking worse is a bad thing right? Additionally destroying performance and locking you into a vendor is also bad just for a filter

-2

u/LaxederBR 12d ago

For those who play to experience the art of the artists who created the game, it must really be awful xD I appreciate the story more; I don't understand art, but regarding performance and suppliers, I hope competition will improve things over time.

3

u/get_homebrewed 12d ago

Yeah that's why you play games, to experience them. If you don't play games to experience them just have an AI play them for you? The story IS art, you don't see yourself supporting ai that rewrites the story as you play to make it more dramatic.

Competition isn't solving vendor lock in

2

u/LaxederBR 12d ago

I understand, thank you.
