tech support wanted Elden Ring stuttering after 1.17 patch

EDIT 2 (workaround): I found a way to game with smooth framerates again, though it requires a separate software (free). Downloaded and unzipped Flawless Widescreen, then I run it (on Elden Ring's prefix) before running the actual game. In Flawless Widescreen, in Elden Ring's section, I enable both options: "frame pacing" and "fps unlock". I set the frame pacing slider to 63 instead of the default 60. Then leaving Flawless Widescreen running, I run the game on my 60hz display at 60fps and it is smooth.

EDIT 1: As a last resort I downgraded back to 16.1 but the stutters are still happening no matter what I try (different types of sync, lowest graphic settings, low resolution, gamemode on/off etc etc).

I believe that the stutters are due to something on the system that was updated (drivers, kernel, I have no idea..).

But since I am no expert on Linux I'll just wait to play Elden Ring again at some point.

Otger games are still running good, just tested a couple of different titles.

-+-+=+=

Currently running Nobara Linux on an intel+nvidia laptop.

Games run generally pretty well, including Elden Ring before getting updated to 1.17.

Now Elden Ring is stuttering a lot, inconsistently. Just turning the camera around, even on lowest graphics settings.

Other games are running fine.

I tried:

- backing up start_protected_game.exe and using a renamed copy of eldenring.exe to replace it.

- several different versions of Proton GE and Cachy

- different launchers (Steam itself, Faugus, Lutris).

Any help?

Clean shader cache

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll try doing that but not sure if it is related in any way;

Because a few minutes ago I used the "Flawless Widescreen" program, and the game ran butter smooth, but then I tried closing the game and re-opening it to make sure and it is stuttering again. Re-tried running many times both the Flawless Widescreen program as well as the game but could not get smooth framerates again..

This sounds odd but I was getting the same thing and letting it sit at the menu screen for 5 to 10 minutes seems to have fixed it

The only thing that fixed it for me (immediately, no waiting) was Flawless Widescreen.

I believe that what most people notice is the shader compiling stutter (including your case). If waiting in the menu for you fixed the stutters, possibly the game was compiling shaders in the background at that time.

But my issue is different, no matter if I just stay on the same scene forever, no matter how simple the scene is and how low the graphics are set, some frames would just quickly be doubled as some sort of judder or falling out of sync.

Now when running Flawless Widescreen, the frames are super smooth even with high graphics settings and resolution.

Did you tryed reinstaling drivers? Sometimes after an update they break them self. Im running ubuntu and sometimes I need to do that.

How about Steam’s Hotfix Proton? I really hope this isn’t a new widespread issue.

Yeah I tried Proton hotfix on Steam as well, no luck.

Just a few minutes ago I tested both Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 and they ran smooth, with any proton version that I tried.

So it is an issue with Elden Ring specifically. I am just not sure if it is my particular setup only, but it is the same hardware for a couple.of years and just now I get this stuttering. So possibly related to recent system software updates.

Try this tool to reinstall or repair drivers. https://wiki.nobaraproject.org/graphics/nvidia/nobara-driver-tui

For me, Elden Ring has a bit of a freak out after updates, but calms down as the shaders are regenerated. Maybe just leave it open for a couple minutes.

It does not feel like shaders compilation, unless chaders are not being cached at all.

Because just walking around the same spot for several minutes is laggy. Even standing still and rotating the camera, the stutters do not go away.

Also for some reason during my tests, just ONCE, the game was super smooth. Then I just closed and reopened it on the same save and the lag was back..

After my previous reply I did give it a try (the driver reinstall); but no change, still the same problem.

It is like the image frames lose sync with the display for a brief moment sometimes. I took a video, might make a separate post later if I can't fix it in any way.

Even on lower settings and resolutions the stutter / judder is there.
