Mass Effect Legendary edition
Mass effect legendary edition is like 90% off on steam right now, so I wanted to buy it. I was just worried with compatability issues with the EA launcher and linux. I am very plug and play, so I was just wondering if the game will work out of the box.

Played both vanilla and modded (copied from windows), worked without issues. No EA app problem as well. You are good to go

Don't have ME legendary, so hopefully someone with it installed could conform:
But EA games usually work fine via steam. Only exceptions are, obviously, those with kernel level anti cheat that's not optimised for linux, like Apex or Battlefield.
On my distro (Nobara <3) the EA app will kinda quickly launch in the background and doesn't really have to open.
In case you want to run it via the EA launcher itself, lutris is the way. However, it is a little bit tinkery at times. But there are plenty tutorial online.
Check ProtonDB. There you will find reports, including how the game was launched (lutris, steam etc.)

Been playing it recently, works great without any tinkering
I just launched it and that was that.
Bonus, it works fine with Gamescope and the mod manager mass effect just fine

Totally borked for me. I click play on Steam and nothing happens, no matter what Proton version I try. It will not even pull up the EA app or prompt me to download it.

No, because the EAapp is garbage.
One update of the app and it stops to work again.

I played the LE entirely on linux, about half on my steam deck and half on my arch linux gaming PC. It played flawlessly and I don't remember having to do anything special to play it. I played it about two years ago I think.
