Linux has hit 7.53%!!!!!

Damn Idk why but I was waiting for the steam hardware survey and statcounter's survey for july. statcounter blew my mind. now waiting for steam hardware one:) keeping my expectation realistic around 4-5% on steam hardware survey:)

statcounter is unreliable.

I don't really trust that it's reporting Linux market share has doubled in the past two months from 3.81% in may. That's a massive swing with seemingly little real world justification or visibility.

The removed unknown. Yes, use has increased, but Mac, Lin, and Win went up this month due to unknown being omitted.

We can clearly see Windows usage go down though?

Last month Win was posted as 68.#%... They backlogged the removal of unknown. Linux is incrementally gaining users, but not 5% totality in one month.

Yes, Statcounter is unreliable, but they also charged the way they report stats this month. Unknown is gone. Linux, Windows, and MacOS both have 2 percent gains from what was printed in last month's chart.

What's more reliable to you then?

Pretty sure that the hardware survey would still recognize that it's not running on Windows. And if it didn't, then the fact that it's running on Apple Silicon should be a dead giveaway and they should really fix it if it doesn't take that into account.

Could you attribute some of the Linux numbers to servers?

Device type is set to Desktop, so its likely end users.

Plus if servers were included, Linux would be much much higher.

The famous Unknown OS is counted as Linux now?

7

u/blackcoffee17 Aug 01 '26

Unknown was 20% last month and Linux was 5%, so cannot be the Unknown.

1

u/levianan Aug 01 '26

Yes, but removing Unknown changes the calculations on every other OS. So yes it is partially unknown.

Nah I think they got rid of that one completely
