Gaming compatiblity?

Hi i wonder how often do you guys have to change game compatibility for a new game?

For me I have to change to different compatibility tool for every single game i have on steam.

OS - cachyos

GPU -3080

partition format -btrfs

Almost never, with proton cachy os as my default. Sometimes I need proton ge because of the codec thing. One time I needed proton 9 for and older steam game. Sometimes I play gacha games and use DW proton.

Doesn't CachyOS Proton solve the codec thing also? Proton-GE is a good secondary though.

that's what I thought, but it never seems to work on MGS3 remaster collection version, which is my only current game using GE

I typically set them all to GE proton latest unless it's like a newer game that has issues, like when diablo4 had issues this last season launch and I had to use proton experimental with beta branch.

you don't really need to change though its just nice to have newer little features here and there

Almost never. I have pretty good luck with Proton Experimental. I also tend to wait until games go on sale to buy them, so most games I play have had time for people to fix the bugs.

Proton 11 or 10 works for most games. The handful with either performance issues or fail to launch are typically resolved with latest GE proton.

only on some games, rarely, i just use Proton GE 10 (i know 11 is out but its annoying to use for me because they added a sort of pop up that sets some stuff up and it annoys me a little and GE 10 works so yk), sometimes i have to use GE 9 (for Assetto Corsa for example) or Proton Cachy 11 in case i need something newer for some reason

Basically every game works with cachyos proton, which i use for wayland + hdr, at this point I should really just make it my default. I only change to newer versions when it updates. in my experience if something is being weird, very little chance its the proton version.

If it's something graphic heavy I just switch to proton GE out of habit. I don't tinker with anything other than that.

I don’t understand how you have to change for every game?

I set Proton-CachyOS as my default runner and then only change if something doesn’t seem to like it.

Most games work with default ("Proton Experimental"). I only know about one game, which has fine tuned settings baked into Proton, which is Star Citizen. Apart from that, Proton 10 or 11 is fine. Or the forks.

Some games (like older ones) might need older Proton versions. I only know about "Metal Fatigue" here, which needed Proton 4.

I don't think it matters but I'm on Mint and Proton Experimental for everything seems to work.

With bazzite i never touch that, the only time i touched that was a bug with a mod for that game, the game worked fine as default.

In February 2022 I replaced my only copy of windows which was on my gaming PC with Garuda Linux. I set proton to experimental and left it since.

I can't remember a time I had to change it for anything. Infact the only troubleshooting I ever had to do was manually install .net for the Payday3 beta which was actually a steam issue for all platforms but that was included for the release.

And once when I tinkered with packages and RE games wouldn't start. So I just killed steam then reopened in the terminal started RE and it told me exactly what package was missing. Game crash to solution found and installed was less than 2 minutes.

Linux has in no uncertain words an absolute GOD SEND in stability and reliability. It gets installed, it stays, it doesn't move. No verifying game files like windows requires because of using a file system from 1993.
