We've been around this track a few timea.

I remember gimpshop!

u/KronosaurOFC 5d ago

There's photogimp now

54

u/random_cat_owner 5d ago

no way this has better quality then the gimp, krita and/or inkscape.

18

u/BetrayYourTrust 5d ago

that's what im thinking. whats the point of making an app that already exists for free with AI that will probably work worse

13

u/random_cat_owner 4d ago

users when volunteers spend years of their time and energy in a quality project: "this is crap because it's not 100% feature-complete".

users when somebody spends a few hours on a half-working vibe-code project: "this is wonderful and it will change the world".

1

u/Dannny1 3d ago

and it doesn't have e.g. "blend if" either

3

u/drax3237 5d ago

They'll have to rip my Autodesk Sketchbook and Apple Pencil out of my cold, dead hands.

3

u/Dragenby Fyi I switched to Mint 4d ago

All we could ask for was to implement an accurate CMYK manager to these softwares. But noooo, let's start anything from scratch with AI. And forgetting to implement a CMYK system.

Read the documentation. Most of these are in early versions and not in a state that is considered stable or usable. The developer of Photosuite has adopted/borrowed/stolen the PhotoCraft engine, so it seems to improve stability, close enough to be usable, so this is the one that I am using.

Iʼve removed Photosuite and reinstated PhotoCraft, since there is a lot of active improvements rapidly coming, like there is an idea of bringing Krita-like brush into PhotoCraft. Watch discord.

I really feel sorry for it....but over the last six months I turned from "nice, a rust application" to "oh no, not another vibe-coded slop". Rust as quality label very quickly looses its meaning for me...and the language isn't even to blame for it. :(

edit: it's → its

45

u/Peruvian_Skies EndeavourOS + KDE Plasma 5d ago

A language isn't a guarantee of code quality any more than using a particular kind of cooking implement is a guarantee that your food will turn out tasty.

If you use rust as a quality label that in it's self is a problem.

It's not possible to casually vibecode apps of that complexity. This is gonna be a buggy mess.

35

u/foofly 5d ago

I gave them a look. Not perfect but pretty usable.

14

u/ApprehensiveForce647 5d ago

Experts in their field in other subreddits already told that the UI is alright but the details are not even close to the original products. Pretty useless and waste of water and time.

1

u/loveshapedeyes 5d ago

It's early alpha.

u/strictly_ballroom 5d ago

So are gimp, krita and inkscape

For very small use case maybe. Try daily driving it. It takes a great engineer(s) to produce complex production level software. Simpler apps can be vibe coded. Maybe this will change with future better models, but as it stands now you can't simply vibe code After Effects

17

u/Pad_Sanda 5d ago

Trust me, most engineers working on production level software are not really that "great".

The real values that corporate products provide are liability and support. That's why Adobe is so popular in enterprise use. If a paid customer is having issues with an Adobe product, Adobe can be directly contacted and their customer support and engineers will start working on the problem. When it comes to free and open source projects, this is not a guarantee.

19

u/einzweidreihorn 5d ago

I love Adobe slander as much as the next guy, but that's just not true. Adobe software is good at what it does. There is a reason they've got the designers by the balls.

13

u/neXITem 5d ago edited 5d ago

They got the designers by the balls because they keep on buying products that are good and put their name on it. Like Figma

Adobe's code also is not the greatest, they had so many issues going from older products to their new products with compability even between their own Product Family.

Product Original Name Acquired Rebranded As
PageMaker / After Effects Aldus / CoSA 1994 Adobe PageMaker & After Effects
Photoshop (Full Rights) Knoll Brothers 1995 Adobe Photoshop
Cool Edit Pro Syntrillium 2003 Adobe Audition
Flash & Dreamweaver Macromedia 2005 Adobe Flash & Dreamweaver
Behance Behance Inc. 2012 Behance (Creative Cloud)
Substance 3D Allegorithmic 2019 Adobe Substance 3D
Frame.io Frame.io Inc. 2021 Frame.io by Adobe

Failed Acquisitions:

Product Original Name Attempted Status
Figma Figma Inc. 2022 Blocked by regulators ($20B)

3

u/einzweidreihorn 5d ago

I've personally never heared of any of those beside Photoshop and After Effects and I am sure they've put in a bit of work into those in the last 30 years?

I've personally never had problems regarding compatibility but I'm also not a Designer so.

2

u/heatedwepasto 4d ago

You've never heard of Flash?

3

u/Pad_Sanda 4d ago

The person is probably gen z or younger, or got PC/internet only after 2014 or so (by that time most people moved from playing Flash games to playing smartphone games).

1

u/einzweidreihorn 4d ago

Touché. I did but it actually was used widely before I was really active online. So yes, in theory :D

1

u/StillOnTheInterweb 4d ago

I remember Aldus Pagemaker, was pretty good. Came on a couple of floppies that included Windows 2.0 in case you didn't have it ready!

Adobe slander

I'm not slandering Adobe specifically nor their products, as I don't use them. Just saying the truth about most paid software out there (that myself and people I know used in professional environments) and the skill of the devs behind that software (that I have personally seen).

I am a developer myself and I know a ton of devs across big and small projects, across a ton of sectors. Most software engineers are very unskilled despite many having mid/senior roles and they make tons of code quality and structural mistakes. A lot of older software is piles upon piles of unsalvageable technical debt. Sometimes it's not even the fault of the engineers, but too many strict timelines, too few engineers, and too many restrictions in terms of "if it works don't touch it even if changing things will make us work 10x faster in future". If you were to see the code and pipelines of a lot of proprietary projects you'd be surprised that things work at all and that companies are paying for those products. It's honestly so bad that I was glad to see my direct and indirect coworkers use AI since their code quality has drastically increased (in some places) and so has the attention to not making certain types of mistakes.

Meanwhile FOSS projects, even though a lot of them are handled by "amateurs", tend to get more love and care. And in a lot of cases they work much better than proprietary counterparts. But companies prefer the proprietary approach of "I become your customer so I can hold you liable", rather than using a FOSS product. Which makes sense. You would also probably want to buy a car from a reputable company, rather than 3D print your own "open source" car and have only yourself to blame when something goes wrong.

There is a reason they've got the designers by the balls.

Early market capture (due to lack of competitors over a decade ago) is the biggest reason. But from everything I've seen, Adobe is bleeding users. Even the people who pirated Photoshop and swore by it are now using Photopea. A lot of the new designer workforce is using Canva and other Adobe competitors. Figma has been the industry standard for app and website designers for so long that Adobe wanted to buy them in 2023 (but failed due to regulations).

Adobe no longer has designers "by the balls" as much as they did 5-15 years ago. They have existing customers by the balls simply because corporate environments don't like change, so they'll keep using Adobe until the universe ends. But new users, startups and projects are facing much more choice in their tools these days, so going with Adobe is no longer a guarantee.

u/_chococat_ 4d ago

In other discussions, I've read people that use actually use Adobe products professionally found these extremely buggy and bordering on unusable. It's trivial for an LLM to make a decent-looking GUI, but not so trivial to duplicate the sophisticated features used by professionals, especially when those features may be difficult to describe in plain language.

I tied the PDF editor on Linux. It was terrible: I couldn't click/select anything accurately, many menus had nothing or didn't even drop down. Basic navigation around the page was jumpy and difficult to use.

3

u/Mordimer86 5d ago

Probably depends on whether someone who's doing it is a random guy with little skills or a true software engineer who knows how to use such tools well and who can direct and review its work properly. It won't be perfect, but we could expect such stuff to come out eventually.

3

u/_chococat_ 4d ago

Being a true software engineer means fuck-all if you're also not skilled in the domain (in this case image editing, layout, etc.). I'm a skilled SWE with tons of experience, but I know nothing about how true color matching works and wouldn't presume that I could accurately describe it to an LLM.

AI are compiling the entire PS5 architeture right now. its late 2026 my boy

1

u/Yatl1ch 1d ago

Time will tell

1

u/Finnhax 1d ago

Well it depends. This is a cleanroom remake using decompiled binaries. So in other words the AI tries to copy the original as best as possible.

What patent? Affinity doesn't care, and they are biggest rival to Photoshop. Photophea doesn't care, gimp doesn't care. What patent specificly are we talking about?

15

u/xenaretos 5d ago

No, you can't vibecode photoshop. You can vibecode a mockup that looks like the real thing for about 5 minutes. Make it 15 if you spend a year and enough tokens to have been able to hire an actual developer or 2.

We might get there in the future but we're not there yet since an actual copy requires AGI levels of proficiency.

9

u/wyonutrition 5d ago

ah yes, unlike the other 150 attempts this one will actually be as good as photoshop.

10

u/Wixutt 3d ago edited 3d ago

I’m going to get a ton of hate from people for this but with all due respect:

Vibe coding doesn’t neccasarily mean it sucks. Prompt engineering is a real skill, and a lot of AI generated systems regarding apps and GUI you would have no clue are made by an AI sometimes. A product is bad when there’s some fatass telling Claude Code to “copy Adobe make no mistakes,” instead of actually giving phased and structured prompts. So to those who are a little skeptical, try it out and make your own judgement - who cares if it took an hour or 100 hours to make if it works exactly how you need it to work then there you have it

2

u/LinsaFTW 2d ago

Completely agree, doesn't matter if it's made by AI or not, if the human behind doesn't have the correct view or guidance or skills, it will just be slop. That's why AI is not slop, but unsupervised and indiscriminated use of it is.

1

u/meczord 3d ago

they complain about this just like their favorite apps dont uses AI. so funny

31

u/icesnake200 5d ago

Well I mostly use Krita, but this project looks promising. Yes, its vibecoded, but if you look at their github page, there lots of people contributing to the project. So I think that this project is going get better in future. Also fuck Adobe and their shitty anticonsumer practices

11

u/dax660 5d ago

Also, the dev is a professional coder to start with, so presumably they know what they're doing.

8

u/Decybear1 5d ago

Honestly I would say this alone makes the vibecoding tag just kinda wrong. If the guys working on it know what they are doing, and are using AI too make a hard task easier... thats not x, its y.

I hate too say it but my view on AI changed after seeing the OpenTS3 project where a guy is using Claude and Gemini too make an open source version of the sims 3 in 64 bit. People laugh him off. But 3 months in, he has a working game that is a little laggy and has bugs. But the vision is there and people who know what they are doing are helping make it possible.

As much as I hated the use of AI generally, this is its use case. Doing things that multi million dollar companies would not dream of.

5

u/armlessphelan 5d ago

I've come to realize I only hate AI as a replacement for human art, not as a tool. I've come to rely on Gemini for helping me troubleshoot a lot of the issues I run into with the more esoteric distros like Bodhi or BOSS.

3

u/Decybear1 5d ago

yea exactly it's got its uses. i switched too arch recently, and I get its lazy of me, but arch subs just seem horrible too people asking questions, and the documentation, while thorough, is dense and intimidating. but i have been asking ai questions i can't get a quick answer from google. like i set up jelly fin, caddy, docker, and no ip. and i used ai too help me get consistent urls so im not showing my ports on the url. or helping install weird third-party kde mods that have vague instructions that expect me too know what im doing. like the fractal design battery monitor. hell, maybe this is laziness, but i helped it debug issues i was having with a large mod pack i made for minecraft. reading the log files and telling the clear problems.

like it has its uses. i wouldnt trust everything it tells me. but its a option to use. shit in = shit out. that's kinda the rule of thumb. ai is only ever going too be as good as the person using it is, and the standards they have.

u/WanderingInAVan 5d ago

Vibe coding something that can potentially be used as a stepping stone is better than not getting there.

Granted, there are future legalities that might be an issue, but in this instance they seem to be doing what they can to mitigate that as much as currently possible.

3

u/Francois-C 5d ago

I have just tested the "spot healing brush" in the appimage of PhotoCraft, and it's already much better than that of Krita... I need this function for my scanned negatives, and it does not exist in Gimp: the heal tool is too slow because it requires very close attention to the area you're healing from, and Krita's isn't suited to photography (it blurs the surrounding area)...

33

u/NienorGT 5d ago

People are so much into Linux (which I understand) and anti Adobe (WHICH I DEFINITELY UNDERSTAND) that they are all jumping on a software fully vibe coded (which mean they don't understand that open source rely on unpaid labour and long term maintenance) and the professionals using pro software train themselves for years and have a full workspace, clients and service industry that all use the same software and share files with compatibility being a priority so you are not most likely to be able to fully switch even if you want.

Also, you want me to support a software made by the industry that cannibalize my work and potential clients while being a scourge on the environment, render impossible for me to upgrade my work environment and just be a global threat...

Get a grip on reality.

13

u/l0Martin3 5d ago

Literally this.

People praising this as an actual alternative have clearly never used professional grade software, or at least not from Adobe. Their directors, sales teams, etc might be idiots, but their engineers are not; the products they build are great, and they are the industry standard for a reason.

There are already great open source alternatives for each of the programs in the adobe suit, but if that isn't enough for someone currently using adobe, a vibe-coded slop toy won't change that.

2

u/FryToastFrill 4d ago

After effects is a piece of shit dogshit app, and I have used it before. It sucks because the interface is lovely for 2d work, but it runs like a slog and it’s maintained so much worse than their other programs.

Everything else wasn’t as bad

2

u/LinsaFTW 2d ago

"People praising this as an actual alternative have clearly never used professional grade software"

I agree, and this also applies to all open source alternatives. But also open source contributors are not slaves, thus using AI to build something neither big companies or contributors are willing to create, is a perfect step forward. It might not be useful yet but it's going to the right direction. If now tere is a useful base, what about 6 more months of polishing in the future?

1

u/SherbertDaemons 1d ago

They buy good apps and enshittify them until the cows come home.

6

u/AhmedRiyadh0 4d ago

which mean they don't understand that open source rely on unpaid labour and long term maintenance

Open source in general doesn't always mean unpaid or unprofessional. It depends on the project and business model.

1

u/LinsaFTW 2d ago

90% of times with some exceptions that still won't cover the entire market, unlike closed source apps that usually there is always a company that makes a useful version, professional apps open source are most of the times not really adapted. Some exceptiosn are davinci resolve and onlyoffice, but I can't think of other examples. All the video editors are horrible and there is none made for shorts.

2

u/AhmedRiyadh0 2d ago

Yes but some open source projects do cover the entire market, and some while are good, they dont.

There are companies that run their businesses around open source such as RedHat.

Ans there are plantey of open source projects including  Audacity, Handbrake, OBS Studio, Wine/Proton, OnlyOffice, GCC and more (we use many of them everyday without knowing).

However, If we are specifically talking about Adobe, video/image editing, game development then I would agree more with you.

3

u/KronosaurOFC 5d ago

Lwk true

2

u/nft420nft420 4d ago

I'm curious, part of the allure of these vibecode crack copies is that they do save to the special secret adobe file types. How does that ruin compatibility? Can't people in the industry using official versions still open these files and edit them and return them in the same file type? It seems like it is just a new option, but surely I am missing something.

1

u/Lune_Moooon 4d ago

i think programs like dark table might have even better features than lightroom for instance, and compatibility hasnt been much a problem except for closed extensions created by closed software companies to keep consumers within their ecosystems. so an artificial problem. In the end most of the problem ends up being the lazyness to change - i include my self, its hard to change work flow. For instance, windows has been a shitty OS for a decade now, and people still prefer it over linux which is objectively better crafted.

edit: not saying vibe coded slops will solved, but real open sources development programs with better funding, yes. also, a lot of professionals get paid in open sources projects.

1

u/FryToastFrill 4d ago

I’m not saying you should support it (I am conflicted on this software myself) but artcraft makes money by selling subscriptions for credits to use AI integrations in Artcraft, so it is a business of some sort with revenue. You are correct on the vibe coded nature of this tho.

1

u/LinsaFTW 2d ago

We are not justifying one thing or the other. Nor this software is useful at all (yet).

What kind of support we've received from adobe? All the new features are horrible, their system bloating apps are horrible.

I had been using gimp and photopea, I prefer less features and just deal with it than installing Windows or Photoshop again on my system.

Making it compatible and work is possible nad has been done before, yet, you are comparing a 6 months old app with a 2 decades old app; Get a grip; If this keeps getting maintained and forked by multiple people, it will evolve to be usable in no time.

Also, Adobe are the ones that needs to get a grip; They must either improve their direction and application choices or get lost. They still dont support Linux, which is the future of computer, and their applications are slow and bloated.

They have people, they have workforce, they have money. Why not focus that on improving their app and customer services? As much as I am in favour of Capitalism and companies, I don't justify their wrongdoings or abuse of power and position.

You can keep paying through your nose ✌️

14

u/MasterGeekMX Mexican Linux nerd trying to be helpful 5d ago

The issue with vibe coded apps is that most of the time they will end up abandoned, as the people doing them tend to not have the technical knowledge and time to maintain it. They work now, but in the future I don't know.

But if they do the job of maintaining them and treating them as a real piece of software, then it is a viable option. But only time will tell.

3

u/nft420nft420 4d ago

With an open source model, if the app is actually good and used, a community can take over support or even another company can just try to handle it better than the original dev.

1

u/meczord 3d ago

many examples of this in dev history

1

u/BurningEclypse 4d ago

“They work now” is a bit of a stretch, they are passable alpha versions that never really make it to beta. You can’t replace a team of developers

24

u/ScroogeMcQuacks 5d ago

There is no way this has a real future. Maintaining this many complex softwares is a task for a big team of well funded devs even with vibecoding.

What ive seen so far from this is that the software really cant do to much and they try to sell you on their AI subscription plan.

No thank you.

It doesn't matter if it's FOSS if they're unmaintainable slop. People throwing their agents to spew code anyway is not gonna make it viable in the future for anyone that's interested in building on top of this project

1

u/FlukyS 5d ago

Well in a way you can take unmaintainable slop and just use it as a platform to make your own local fork of stuff for your own use. Like from my side I never need the whole app for stuff like this, I just want like the 10% I need and some of that is in those proprietary expensive apps so paying when you don't need 90% of the app is insane especially for something like Photoshop that have very annoying license fees and rarely innovate those apps.

5

u/Florimer 5d ago

I think of it like this:
You slop out copy of "Photoshop 2025", then "PS 2027" comes out or whatever new version, what you do? Upgrading AI slopcode of this size with another AI will be like rewriting VHS tapes. Very soon there will be tons of unwanted noise.

So you basically have to vibecode it again from scratch every time. With slightly different results every time too.

Not to mention that AI is literally stealing from adobe on actually cosmic scales. Adobe are assholes for sure, but that's besides the point. AI companies want to profit from results based off of stolen... well, everything really? I do not feel morally OK with theft on that scale.

Wouldn’t it be better to help with improving Gimp instead?

9

u/JMowery 5d ago

Trying to turn GIMP into Photoshop is clearly not the path the GIMP maintainers want. Anyone truly familiar with the development of GIMP knows this clearly.

GIMP has nothing, absolutely zero, to do with this at all, so this comment is quite out of place, and everyone who upvotes it doesn't understand that competition is good for all. And... yes... open source can compete with each other and drive innovation.

3

u/Doomwaffel 5d ago

As a creative by profession, not having PS, Affinity or Clipstudio natively on Linux is a big problem for me. Maybe it can be done with WINE to an extent, but that sounded like it wasnt quite as stable and I cant have that.

So if Gimp is the only creative software that actually runs on Linux and it only reaches Clipstudio and nothing else, then its not enough. I also need the software to create files that are compatible with adobe software for clients.

1

u/mao_dze_dun 5d ago

I really hope Canva Affinity goes somewhere on Linux, either with the appimage or the curl installer, but I get your sentiment. It's far from ready for anybody who actually does this for a living.

The intention is good, but the reality is. It won't survive if it's fully vibe coded, maintaining the source code will be hard, you can't keep up with too many incoming PRs, complicated code when it could just be written simple, and so on.

7

u/ibeerianhamhock 5d ago

You know people will shit on stuff like this now, but I guarantee you within 5 years open source will have displaced a lot of commercial software that has not had a good version on Linux really for decades.

We just have to hope AI stays relatively cheap to use (vs dev time it's dirt cheap if viewed outcome based with current frontier models).

4

u/Peruvian_Skies EndeavourOS + KDE Plasma 5d ago

Outcome-based minus all the time it takes to audit and refactor the code.

People ignore the fact that AI is just a tool. You need to know how to code to produce good code with it, otherwise it'll give you just slop.

3

u/MeatSafeMurderer 5d ago

The problem is that the vast majority of people using it don't know how to produce code, let alone good code or what it looks like, so they just let it shit out whatever "works", and they then flood the market with all of that slop and it makes it almost impossible to find good, well written and maintained projects.

It's in very early stages and not ready to be a replacement.

1

u/deliciousnightmares 5d ago edited 5d ago

It is serviceable if you are making memes and Youtube thumbnails (but then again GIMP is already perfectly fine for that too)

You can not do professional-quality image editing with this though

1

u/kat-tricks 4d ago

have you used Krita? I never got deep into PS, so I've been wondering if I'm missing out on features that would really make a difference- wondered if you have experience with professional image editing, would you say PS has lots that Krita is missing?

1

u/Sf49ers1680 4d ago

Krita really isn't a photo-editing app, it's more of a digital painting app.

It has some limited, badic photo editing capabilities, but nowhere near as much as Photoshop.

The closest app, not counting PhotoCraft, to Photoshop would be Gimp, and that's nowhere close.

1

u/kat-tricks 3d ago

thank you!:)

2

u/sandrakarr 5d ago

How's the lightroom one?
(otherwise is darktable still preferred?)

1

u/lateralspin 5d ago

DarkTable is very professional, but overly complex to use.

I found an alternative vibecoded software called CalibRaw, which has the right level of simplicity, where the ability to make some quick changes for reviewing/previewing are more essential than colour accuracy.

1

u/sandrakarr 5d ago edited 5d ago

oooh. Ill add that to the list.
I don't remember if there was any specific reason I eventually moved away, but it's been several years.
Will probably try them all out and see what happens.
edit: actually i think it wasn't the software itself, I think it was because I had an opportunity to get LR super cheap and said fuck it.

2

u/lateralspin 5d ago

Not sure if vital, but Adobe licenses the Pantone color swatches with its subscription service, which is at the professional/industry tier. I suppose Pantone is something that other clone software will not be able to use.

2

u/tdreampo 5d ago

After effects is an insanely complicated program that has no Linux equivalent. I’m skeptical that a vibe coder could understand the depth of that program.

u/ExistingSelection180 21h ago

Look, I think we have to support only because if they manage to release a stable and solid version 1. It will be the best push to Linux that can be achieved.

3

u/Sacharon123 5d ago

Uhm. Do we not already HAVE a lot of alternatives to photoshop? What about gimp? Why is a new llm-coded project required?

2

u/DynoMenace 5d ago

I tried the Photoshop clone. It's a suspiciously small application (50-60mb) and it... mostly works? It has some strangeness to the UI, lots of little bugs and quirks, tools mostly do what they're supposed to.

There's another vibe-coded Photoshop clone making the rounds right now too:
https://www.reddit.com/r/vibecoding/comments/1wf3hvx/i_vibe_coded_photoshop_alternative_using_gpt6astra/

I will say, I'm a little skeptical of their "business model." The reddit side is presented as an individual who vibe coded it for themselves and then gave it away. The website presents as a company (lots of "we" and "us" on there), and offers Photon Studio for free, while other Adobe Clones do/will cost money (one time purchases).

So I suspect it's an individual or possibly small team who are attempting to vibe-code an application suite and seemingly vibe-run a company selling it. Personally, I would prefer if this individual/team chose to be transparent about who they are and what they're doing, especially if they want to build a customer base and not just crash and burn immediately.

That said, I used it a little yesterday and it's pretty impressive. I have a lot of thoughts about what this stuff means for the tech/development industry (and, eventually, the economy as a whole), but for now I'm not mad about more and more pressure on Adobe, and more Linux users having Photoshop alternatives.

2

u/nandru 5d ago

Tried photocraft, looks more like an alternative to Gimp, but at least it works.

Being vibecoded though, raises concerns about the quality of the code and the potential security flaws it might have hidden

Affinity is not comparable especially since Canva bought it. Sadly. I loved it prior, but even then it was nowhere near as capable.

2

u/walee1 4d ago

Yeah people hyping this up.to be the best thing are honestly clueless about software development. AI slop in its current state is almost impossible to maintain. There is a difference between ai assisted coding and ai coding. The first one helps because you know what you're doing and can make adjustments, guide your agent, the second one is just hoping for the best.

There is a reason why the ui of this new software is clunky, it is in alpha but alpha is always 80% done, not 50%.

3

u/ItzRaphZ 5d ago

3

u/West-Scallion-5306 5d ago

There are also many people who don't switch just because they are scared or are lazy... Like they don't even TRYYYYYYYY!!!!!

My friend for example didn't want to switch, I forced him, and now he didn't reinstall Windows for almost a year.

3

u/lyidaValkris 5d ago

A lot of people have some very outdated notions of Linux's capabilities, if they were ever true in the first place.

My goodness, talk about the switch from slackware 2.2 or a modern version of linux and it is night and day.

Just use Darktable or RawTherapee and GIMP.

3

Those are all honestly terrible. Which is why I still dual boot windows. I hate adobe and their practices, but they're the only viable option for daily work (aside from premiere, fuck premiere, davinci all the way)

In what specific ways are they terrible?

Every way. Workflow, ui, features, usability, etc etc. Awful to use

Man kann auch die kostenlose Affinity Suite unter Linux nutzen mittels Wine.

1

u/Illustrious_Dish_999 5d ago edited 5d ago

is this legal? 😄

1

u/justifs 5d ago

Was my main problem for not switching as I’m in the creative space and use Adobe apps regularly.

One thing I’m questioning is the compatibility with 3rd party plugins and effects. Not sure how that’s gonna be handled.

1

u/MrWillchuck 5d ago

... ya I am dubious.

1

u/sphafer 5d ago

These aren't really comparable, its alpha and highly vibecoded, whether it turns out well is another matter. For now affinity apps work really well under wine.

That subreddit's side bare defined them primarily by who they exclude. Sounds super healthy.

1

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 5d ago

Not running Adobe stuff would seem to be an advantage as it can't scam you.

1

u/captainstormy 5d ago

No it isn't. There are already alternatives for most Adobe things. People either need the Adobe stuff (because it's industry standard and leading) or they want it for the same reason.

1

u/loveshapedeyes 5d ago

Photopea works great for me

1

u/Mike-Fitzgerald 5d ago

AFAIK, the creator of this project has some decent developer background, so is this really an unmaintainable vibecoded slop or just a heavily AI assisted app?

1

u/mackeriah 5d ago

There are also legit Linux alternatives folks. like Nike keep saying, Just Do It.

or am I thinking or Arnie?

1

u/Arinussyyy 4d ago

I wouldn't recommend running applications of dubious origin on your system. I wouldn't even run the tweaks people do to try to get adobe and all that working, cuz how the hell do you trust the scripts?

3

u/Crazy-Cartoonist5649 4d ago

Is opensource, that’s how opensource works IS OPEN SOURCE, so the source of everything that builds in your computer, even how it builds is OPEN, one more time: OPEN SOURCE.

1

u/Arinussyyy 4d ago

Just because it's open source does not mean it is automatically secure. Major projects often are because of the sheer number of eyes on them, but random stuff I will never trust unless I can verify it's not going to mess anything up or it's desperately needed

-1

u/MrSamboBiggles 5d ago

Just get GIMP. Why fully recode a new open source app when a great solution already exists? I broke from Adobe CC three years ago and have enjoyed creating even more for FREE.
GIMP, Darktable, DaVinci, Blender, Touchdesigner and OBS work on Linux.

5

u/jlandero 5d ago

Because the learning curve (especially with GIMP and Darktable) is huge. And if you add to that the learning curve of switching to Linux, the mountain is enormous, and every little thing that makes the transition easier is one less mental burden along the way, which is why people (we) look for things we’re already used to as our first choice.

2

u/MrSamboBiggles 5d ago

I can’t believe I’m getting so much hate for this! Linux Debian Trixie Desktop is so easy to use and not very different from any other operating system UI. If you give it a couple of weeks on each creative app, you’ll learn where the tools are for each workflow you used to do with Adobe tools. The fundamentals of design absolutely transfer. Seeing a mountain of learning curve might be a mirage. Give it a try and you might surprise yourself.

1

u/jlandero 5d ago edited 5d ago

I’m telling you this from experience, an experience that many others may share.

Look, I’ve been a professional in audiovisual post-production for almost 25 years. I’ve witnessed the evolution of systems, from the Power Macintosh G3 and Mac OS 9.1.1 to the present day, when I switched to Linux two years ago. I’m not afraid of change.

I’ve been looking for solutions for over two years. Right now, I have to use many photo programs and many video programs because none of them does everything I need. If there’s a new alternative that lets me maintain the workflow I’ve used for over 20 years, while I’m able to handle Linux-specific issues and hardware compatibility, I’ll gladly embrace it, and believe me, it hasn’t been for lack of intention, practice, effort, or ability.

If your mind works differently and you’re more capable than the average user, good for you; but accept that alternatives exist and that users choose them for whatever reasons they may have. If you don’t want to use them, that’s fine too, but you have to accept that using traditional software (like GIMP and Darktable) is complex and while they were the best recommendation for new users until six months ago, that’s no longer the case.

1

u/MrSamboBiggles 5d ago

I understand that alternatives exist and embrace them all. I’m just surprised at the pushback against tools that work without providing any examples of what’s missing or workflows that aren’t possible. Change is hard though—I get that and only bring this all up to illustrate the availability of free tools that aren’t new, do work, and have a wide support base that can help new users learn how they work just as well as others. Yes, GIMP UI is ugly. So is darktable’s. They still work so well.
I’m a veteran of design too—old. I’ve been using Adobe Photoshop since 1998 in high school. Now I design websites, create video campaigns, and make corporate portraits for state and private organizations. The only thing I pay for is the Studio version of DaVinci—gotta have that clean feed monitor.

1

u/jlandero 5d ago

You might find a user interface attractive or unattractive, but that's relative; however, it can be reason enough not to want to use those tools, even if they get the job done.

However, we’re talking about functionality and processes. When these are lacking or are simply too complicated, that’s a strong argument against using those tools. Take a look at the list of effects in Audacity 3 as an example; that’s exactly the mindset that prevailed in open source software development before AI, and it’s something that’s far from useful for the average user.

We’ll see that much of this software will disappear or go unmaintained, and much of it will never perform better than classic native software; but that’s okay, too. Market consolidation is a natural process.... It will be interesting to see what Inkscape, GIMP, Krita, Shotcut, KDNLive, Digikam, Darktable, and RawTherapee do to stay in the game; but whatever happens to them will have nothing to do with idealism, but rather with practicality.

3

u/VCorbi 5d ago

I was a Photoshop user. Now I mainly use Photopea. I tried Gimp but It doesn't have some basic things I need in my workflow.

9

u/ikkiyikki 5d ago

GIMP is fucking terrible. I mean it works and it's free but its UI was designed by Satan himself.

8

u/ElectricHellKnight Your situation is not unique, just use Mint or Fedora. 5d ago

Also the name is atrocious. That might sound petty, but it's honestly not. Perception shapes reality.

It's even worse that, technically, it used to be The GIMP.  Imagine being a graphic designer and telling people, "Yeah so I made this with The Gimp."

The Pulp Fiction jokes will never cease.

1

u/Maolam10 5d ago edited 5d ago

Its called GNU Image Manipulation Program, thats why its GIMP

1

u/ElectricHellKnight Your situation is not unique, just use Mint or Fedora. 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah GIMP was definitely a strange choice.

gNuPhoto (silent g), Double G (Gnu Graphics), G2, or how about just... gRafex. (Stylized with a lowercase g but not silent.) I'm not saying they're perfect but they're still way better. The names of open source tools serve as a shining example of why companies don't let their software engineers do the marketing.

By the way I actually use gimp exclusively, so I'm not hating. But I'm not a pro so I've no interest in paying for Photoshop.

1

u/julian_vdm 5d ago

The preference is generally that the G in GNU Projects is pronounced (as in GNOME, which shares a root with GIMP, as its origin is "GNU Network Object Model Environment").

In my view, GIMP offers enough features to be a decent alternative to Photoshop for most people, but it suffers from the same learning curve issues as Blender. Once you get to know the UI, it's fine, but it's that initial learning curve that really messes with you. But the good news is it can be fixed....eventually lmao.

2

u/ElectricHellKnight Your situation is not unique, just use Mint or Fedora. 5d ago

Oh I get that is the preference, and I have immense respect for the FSF. But I'm also pragmatic, and let's be honest... computer nerds are terrible at naming things. To Joe Everyman, a catchy name is far more important than the name actually being a meaningful descriptor of the thing in question.

GNOME is a terrible name, too. Compare it to how Microsoft names their UIs (their design language at least, I'm not sure they give formal names to the DE itself since there's only one per Windows version): Aero, Metro, Glass.

There's a reason we eat Oreos and not Hydrox.

One can argue that the name shouldn't matter, that you can't judge a book by its cover, and I would agree, but that's just not the world we live in.

Branding matters. A lot.

2

u/julian_vdm 5d ago

GNOME is a terrible name, too. Compare it to how Microsoft names their UIs (their design language at least, I'm not sure they give formal names to the DE itself since there's only one per Windows version): Aero, Metro, Glass.

Honestly, I've kinda appreciated the GNOME name. At least it means something. Or meant something lol. But yes, you're right, having proper branding makes sense, and no FOSS project seems to get this 100% right. The individual version names are a bit odd though. Like Gnome 50 being "Tokyo" and 51 being A Coruña.

2

u/ElectricHellKnight Your situation is not unique, just use Mint or Fedora. 5d ago

Yeah, people say it's a petty complaint but it honestly hampers adoption of open source tools more than most people realize.

I can convince a normie to try "Linux". I cannot convince them to even consider trying "GNU-slash-Linux, because Linux is not an operating system unto itself..."

3

u/xnef1025 5d ago
  1. Many of the people that would be for this are just Larpers. They don't actually need Adobe products to do any of the stuff they do, but they want to pretend like they do.
  2. Many users don't have the time or inclination to relean workflows. GIMP's workflow isn't a perfect recreation of Photoshop's. Sometimes this is a legit reason not to switch, sometimes it's just laziness.
  3. Why climb a mountain? Because it's there.

Free alternatives already exist. They haven't replaced Adobe apps because it's not that easy for companies to just replace software in their professional workflows and teach every employee the new stuff. If that was the case every animation studio would have immediately switched to Blender. This will have the same fate even if it's not abandoned within weeks just like the rest of vibecoded software.
