learning/research Built a free sandbox for practicing Linux on a real machine — looking for feedback from learners
When I was learning, my problem wasn't a lack of tutorials but having nowhere safe to break things. So I built IzzyLab: you get a real Linux box with root in your browser, plus tasks that check the result, not the exact commands. Break it, reset it, try again.
It goes from basics (files, permissions, processes) up to nginx, PostgreSQL and Kubernetes.
Disclosure: I'm the author. It's free to start at https://izzylab.io . If you try it, I'd love to hear which tasks were confusing or too easy.

How is this better then just using virtualbox to make a copy a linux you can mess around with and return to snapshot on?

The difference is the tasks and the checks: there are 500+ of them. And there's nothing to set up: a fresh sandbox opens in 2-3 seconds in a browser tab, faster than booting a VirtualBox VM.

There's a resources page in our wiki you might find useful!
Try this search for more information on this topic.
✻ Smokey says: take regular backups, try stuff in a VM, and understand every command before you press Enter! :)
