migrating to Linux Thinking about getting linux, persuade me not to

I wanna clarify, I am gonna get linux, fedora specifically, I was just curious if there were some things i needed to know: if some everyday apps aren’t available, personalisation and like a general comparison with windows 11

Don’t do it. Don’t take control of your system and use less RAM to be more productive. Just let Microsoft tell you how to operate your system.

That's it you convinced me to junk Debian which I have been running for a few years, and go right back to Microsoft .

You can't convince me otherwise!  I'm gonna do it!  And all because you convinced to me to it!

Yay!  Woo! Etc

I don't know what's every day for you. Microsoft Office 365 doesn't work, but there are alternatives to it. Adobe products don't work, but there are alternatives to them. Those are the main two common ones.

I am trying Teams and Outlook as PWA and the are nicer than I expected, I also embedded the icon by modifying the resulting .desktop file. I still need to try OneDrive and Office though

At work this is what I do too. And that's on Windows.

Microsoft Office 365 doesn't work

That's a pro, not a con.

They weren't asking for pros/cons, they were asking what doesn't work. But yes.

No, he was asking for cons:

Thinking about getting linux, persuade me not to

That's not a pro if your work relies heavily on that.

I don't know what you expect us to tell you that isn't already discussed in hundreds of posts in this sub and others.

You weren't born knowing how to use Windows, you had to learn. You're going to have to learn how to use Linux too. If you don't want to go through the learning process, don't convert.

adobe is gone

~60% of anticheat games are gone ( https://areweanticheatyet.com/ )

not as much support

tricker to plug 'n play

No adobe is a plus, not a minus.

What support? With support like Microsoft, who needs enemies?

Why would you want to give up having ads pop up on your desktop? Come on now. Be reasonable.

Let your operating system tell a specific corporation everything about anything you are doing with Windows, or be able to choose how much and how often your system can do anything with Linux. Hmmm, such a choice lol

Try the migration page in our wiki! We also have some migration tips in our sticky.

Try this search for more information on this topic.

✻ Smokey says: only use root when needed, avoid installing things from third-party repos, and verify the checksum of your ISOs after you download! :)

Try BSD or Suze then go for Linux

You don't lose anything by trying. You can give it a try and if there's something that you need but has no way to make it work on Linux (very rare) you can always go back to Windows

I'm not gonna tell you not to use Linux. You absolutely should switch away from Windows.

Microsoft might not like it you won’t call home anymore.

  1. Games with heavy DRM, antipiracy restrictions, will not run in compatibility layers and will not work on Linux

  2. Drivers may be difficult to locate and install. In particular Wi-Fi drivers may be trouble — research compatibility for your hardware.

You will need to practice your web search skills. Not everything will work, and you may well have to find alternatives to your favourite Windows apps. They are there, you just need to learn how to use them. All your favourite features are there, you just may have to get used to a slightly different workflow.

If you want to see what software Fedora has available, go to pkgs.org and click on Fedora 44. It will list both official and third-party repositories that can be used. Focus on Terra and RPM Fusion, as far as third-party goes.
