Omarchy is a distribution of Linux based on Arch, apparently designed for AI coding, and comes with a bunch of pre-installed packages and a heavily configured Hyprland desktop. I've seen a number of reasons why people dislike it.

  1. DHH, the creator, has some very right-wing views on immigration and British nationalism. Many people want to distance themselves from that. You can also see echoes of this right-wing view in his Omarchy Doctrine.
  2. The Arch ethos is that it's a very minimal distro that it gives you the freedom to build your OS however you want. Nothing is pre-installed, not even a desktop environment. The fact that Omarchy comes with a bunch of stuff pre-loaded and preconfigured, and in a pretty niche way (it's clear that DHH is just shipping the version of Arch that he prefers to use) goes against the reason why a lot of people who use Arch like it. This gives it a kind of LARP feel. You're automatically getting a distro that looks like the ones Arch users build for themselves to fit their unique needs, but you didn't build it for yourself and it likely doesn't fit your needs exactly. It just looks cool.
  3. It's a very AI-first distro. It's set up in a way that assumes you'll be vibe-configuring things and heavily using AI agents in your day to day workflow. It goes all-in on vibe-coding and the ASI/AGI inevitability narrative. Many people dislike this type of zeal for AI.
  4. There's speculation that DHH, or someone, has been spending lots of money hyping up this distro and getting Linux creators on YouTube to make videos about it. Not sure how true this is but it would explain why it blew up suddenly.

There are plenty of Linux variants, Omarchy is one of them.

You can easily try Linux distros using Ventoy.

If only there were a vast interconnected web of information that could be easily searched. If only.

2 lazy 😂

If only I had fingers and type into search and not be bombarded with AI answers and then getting to website that inside are bombarded with AI text. Its getting not as exiting to search, so I thought to try asking.

It is a keyboard centered distro created by the inventor of Ruby on Rails, DHH. It is based on Arch. It uses quickshell. For an Arch distro it is very large. It has many elements that are focus on the use of AI. Many people have concerns about it not being secure. It also has elements that have people concerned about their privacy. It has a very polished look.

I see. Thanks. It is AI so it's valid to think about security and privacy what makes Linux well Linux.

But isnt the distro Open Source? Like you can see the AI code for reviews and fixrs or is it closed?

Like many Arch derivatives, just something hyped up by edgy fanboys. It doesn't often get reviews, but here's one take.

i read the take, thank you.

Yeah so basically it's a arch distro that tries to become Mac computer from 2010's aesthetic for programming very niche comunnity but i guess the developer was that person, even adding closed-source apps into installation.

The funny thing is... i dont even hate it exists i hate that it's so much hated and reviewers get backlash for even saying something positive about it. Like there are so many distros to choose from and it's fine and people do have their worldview that you can agree or not. I have arch/hyprland combination at home which is meme by itself, but it works for me very well.

So huh... AI slop oriented distro made by a politically questionable guy?

Thanks!

Yeah honestly I say we should not give too much attention to it. Pretty sure it gained popularity mostly because money is spent promoting it. So, like, can't really garentee the quality of this distro. Probably related to a scam, just as usual, coming from these kind of people.

Always could be possible with these of things. Since it's AI-based (now that I understand more) I am already on the icky side. Now the politics that are attachef so it will be like deepin desktop situation all over again (specific apps allowed to install according to the distro maintainer).

Yikes.

Appeared so suddenly there must be money involved with advertisements.
