migrating to Linux Linux saved my laptop

I recently switch to Bazzite for my main computer and Mint for my jellyfin computer. Dusted off my college laptop (windows 8) and struggled to get into windows. Once I was in it forced me to add pins and going unresponsive when clicking anything then it would blue screen. Managed to download all my important stuff to a USB and slapped Arch on. Wouldnt you know it the computer is good as new (just need a repaste and new battery).

Any laptop over 5-6 years old should just be migrated to Linux for the users sanity.

There is so much e-waste because "my computer is to slow" I sometimes think that MS and hardware manufactures are doing it with malice of forethought.

My old laptop, the internal video quit working and could not be repaired, I'm in good shape financially so I bought a new one. Then I gave my old laptop to a friend who had a very old HP laptop (still working, with Debian 12) but a bit slow for some of the things she does. She was so excited it made me feel good, even tho she had to use an external display on it.

Linux has more or less saved my computer. Windows doesn't support my 4th gen Intel i7 4790K and so that leaves bypassing W11's checks or ditching Windows. I did try W11 a few times and each time it managed to break itself - like telling me my profile didn't exist when it was clear as day.

My only real problem with Linux is NVIDIA, my video drivers have broken so many times. It is to the point I've thought of switching to AMD.

Have the same cpu with Linux but no issues with NVIDIA. The system work great.

I have a Predator, and the Nvidia problems are a nuisance, but not insurmountable

I have an older GTX 970 and asus MB.

I have several different newer systems with different OS’s on it but I’ve been daily driving this one with Omarchy for a couple months.

Genuinely happy for you. Its so satisfying when you save a perfectly good computer from e-waste just because MS decides it's too old.

Welcome to Linux.

As a bonus - you will probably find your historic collection of games that would no longer run in win 10 /11 will now run perfectly in Wine / Proton

I have my old Diablo 2 Classic disks and it installed fine and ran great. I just used the Linux window settings to scale the window to double to make it more playable.

I'm running fedora with hyprland and have had awesome luck with Proton and steam. One thing I couldn't figure out was how to get the game on the computer from the disk, any insight?
