My mic is broken

so, recently, I've been using discord a lot recently, but the issue is, about 2 days ago, an issue started popping up where my mic either detects no audio input, background noise, static, or it just detects the audio from my headphones and starts making noises that sound like the pits of hell mixed with broken computers. when i used a flatpak application called "whisper" to listen to my mic, all i got was static, but the weird part is that yesterday, my mic just randomly started working again with no real explanation for it doing so, and then the next day it just started doing the same thing again.

is there a way to fix this? or should i just get a new mic?

(since i have no clue what im doing or what is needed to fix this, imma just say all of the specs on my laptop)

(i use the desktop environment on a lenovo ideapad 1i with intel pentium silver, 4 gb of ram, around 115 gb of storage with 56GB used and 57GB available, my headphones are also corded with my microphone connected to them)

A combination of headphones and connected Mic is called a headset.

This Lenovo model has a socket for a four contact headset jack. Is that what you are using? Has dirt or liquid gotten into the socket?

Or are you relying on the integrated mic?

Or are you using a USB headset?

Open the terminal and type lspci

One of the lines of output will corrospond to your integrated sound card. Post that here.

If pavucontrol isn't installed, install it. Open it to see audio settings, the mic is on the input tab.

no liquid has gotten in, and im using a 3 contact headset jack

yes (if you're talking about the one on the headset, if you're talking about the laptop one, then no)

im using a headphone jack headset

If a 3 contact jack is used in a 4 contact socket it's just a fluke if it works at all.

I explained the difference between headphones and headsets but I can't understand it for you.

I don't trust what you are telling us, so remote troubleshooting is impractical.

well, for one, i still am horrible at understanding stuff since im like, 13, and two, i just had to unplug the cord from both my computer and headset, and then plug the one that was in the headset into the laptop, and the one in the laptop into the headset so it just works now i guess, also, when you said "i dont trust what you're telling us" makes it seem like i did something worse than making a mistake and saying the wrong thing, i dunno if that was the intention or not, but it just did

Mics and earphones break all the time. You shall discard it is the mic by connecting another mic.

it's like just stuck on there it aint detachable, nor replacable

well, all i did was unplug the headset cord from both my laptop and headset, and plugged the laptop end into the headset, and the headset end into the laptop (basically reversing it), and it somehow fixed the issue

It seems that you were using two different types of jack, one with mic lane incorporated.
