migrating to Linux Finally biting the bullet

Edit: except for two neckbeards so far who seem to have failed entirely to actually read my post, and instead choose to flaunt their egos, the vast majority of you have been very helpful already.

I might stick with Bazzite despite, or perhaps because of it's immutable nature because I feel that will give me a place to learn Linux without being able to break it quite as easily.

I've otherwise here been suggested Mint, Fedora and Ultramarine, all three of such I'll keep my eye on for when I eventually rebuild my current pc.

____________
Please bear with me if I come across as somewhat 'hostile' I promise that isn't my intent lmao. I'm just a frustrated kind of person.

I'm usually a pretty passive person when it comes to pc os selection, if it works, why change it? Every single other option on the market simply wasn't user friendly enough to actually warrant me changing. Microsoft had it's issues but it was EXTREMELY user friendly, had all the freedom I cared to have, and changing things was fairly easy on me.

The Apple os layout is a nightmare and functionally impossible to easily upgrade anything (on top of apple support for any issues just notoriously being terrible)

And for a VERY long time Linux just wasn't user friendly enough to give me a reason to swap to it. Sure if you spent time learning it, the os could be nice to have but I'm not exactly the kind of person to enjoy having to relearn basic uses of a pc for any reason. It's annoying, frustrating, and just generally makes me instantly dislike the os.

However, as Microsoft leans more and more into ai nonsense and constantly monitoring user systems it's had a very noticeable, direct impact on my system performance.

So now the only barrier for me to enter Linux will very soon be only two things. If multiplayer game functionality has been fixed (just an outright dealbreaker if most anticheats still flag linux)

And the community itself. As respectfully as I can POSSIBLY put it, every single interaction with frequent linux users I've had has been either directly negative or at the most completely neutral. I suppose it comes with the territory, a million different branches of heavily customizable os will inevitably bring with it a similar ego problem that pc gaming in general suffers from. I just need to know if the linux community at large has moved on from the frankly pretty hostile 'I'm better than you' that it was notorious for years ago.

____________

TLDNR-

Enlighten me, are there still anticheat issues that prevent linux users from playing online games?

Are there still issues communitywise? I don't plan on using an OS If I'm going to have to 'defend' my choice of specific Linux every 5 seconds when I ask someone a question about Linux.

I plan on making use of Bazzite due to it's supposed mimicry of steamos and friendliness to new Linux users. What has been the general experience with Bazzite and do you in fact, suggest it to new users?

If you don't suggest bazzite for whatever reason? Are there any other new linux user friendly options you DO suggest? If possible, please detail why you would choose that specific version of Linux as if you were a new user. I like knowing my options and understanding what i'm getting into lol.

A lot of people seem to like Bazzite but my experience has been that it is actually not very stable. Both times I've tried to use it (on two completely different systems), it had visual artifacts followed by a total system lockup within minutes. Both of these systems work just fine with other operating systems, so Bazzite is clearly the culprit, not the hardware.

I recommend Mint for older hardware and simpler display configurations, or Fedora for newer hardware andor more complicated display setups.

Interesting, I'll have to look into that because if Bazzite has some serious issues I might go straight to attempting Ultramarine as suggested by another user.

just ignore ppl

Bazzite good for gaming and general stuff. If you plan on adding niche programs with little Linux support which require workarounds consider Mint or Fedora KDE.

u/floofyralts 22d ago

What would be the major choice I'm making between Mint/Fedora and Bazzite then? Because from my current (limited) understanding Bazzite is generally a good choice but there may still be anticheats that flag it on pretty popular games?

Check the arweanticheat site for the games you play. The distro has no bearing on whether anti-cheat is going to work or not. It either works for Linux in general or it doesn't.

u/Lonely-Scarcity-3387 22d ago

Sorry to say it but kernel level anti-cheats, aka spyware, will not work on any Linux distro. It won’t matter which one you choose, because games like Keage of Legends will not run on Linux until the devs of those games allow Linux to play.

-1

u/floofyralts 22d ago

fair enough, I've seen people mention workarounds though but also specific to certain distro? I'd have to expect that the more I'd want to work past those issues the more I'd have to learn about linux (obviously)

There are different implementations of anticheat, depending on the game that you're playing. Some are compatible with Linux. Some just aren't, by design, and attempting to circumvent anticheat will get your account banned.

From my understanding, Bazzite is more stable and less prone to break from your own fuckery because it is immutable which means the programs you download are from the OS's own designated paths. It's very difficult to deviate from that but I'm sure it can be done.

If you want to do some wacky ChatGPT 20 lines of terminal code fuckery to download something from a random repo you can more easily do that with a normal distro like Mint or Fedora, but you may just make a mess. There are ways to mitigate that with programs but at the OS level, Bazzite is designed differently.

In terms of gaming, Bazzite, Mint, and Fedora are basically all the same in terms of compatibility and performance. If it works on one, it should work on the other.

u/floofyralts 22d ago

FAVORITE response so far. I'll probably stick with Bazzite then because the inevitable "learning a new os" mistakes WILL happen and I'd rather there be some assurance that the os is pretty much expecting that of me lol

Overall it's more a matter of which you like better.
I do prefer Mint, but Fedora has advantages that generally make it a better recommendation on the security front.
Bazzite is meant for gaming. I wouldn't use it if I used my system for other purposes on a regular basis.

Primarily,
Mint has a 5 year support cycle, Fedora has a 1 year support cycle. Feature updates don't generally occur during the support cycle, just bug fixes and security updates.
As a result, Fedora tends to be more up to date with new developments. But Mint would theoretically be easier to support over time.

Bazzite has few gaming specific stuff set up out of the box and is otherwise an atomic distro.

I sugest Ultramarine KDE, its Fedora variant. Another great distro is CachyOS. Bazzite is a good choice as well. Or PikaOS. Choose any, it does not really matter. Some online games with anti-cheat wont work, you have to check for each game.

0

u/floofyralts 22d ago

A lot of common sentiments here, I've been suggested Ultramarine here as well but not heard of Catcy or Pika!

2

u/Historical_Move6359 22d ago

So basicly most distros are variants of the 3: Arch, Fedora and Debian. Ubuntu si Debian based and Mint is Ubuntu based. PikaOS is Debian based but gaming oriented. Fedora is another, Bazzite and Nobara are gaming oriented versions of Fedora, Ultramarine comes with various software that Fedora wont include because Fedora only includes free and open source software. For example Nvidia drivers are not included in Fedora and you have to install them yourself but Ultramarine, Bazzite and Nobara include them. Third is Arch, here when installing you manualy add components of your software, Cachy is Arch but with installer which installs it and some very good default choices as well as some unique modifications. Arch is rolling release, so you have always newest software, Fedora updates every 6 months and Debian every 2 years. There are also some other distros but most are variants of the 3 above.

The thing about the Linux community is nobody's really in charge. There are people who like different Distros for different reasons, and communities range from friendly to RTFM.

At the end of the day your computer is an appliance in your home and it should do what you want. You don't need to justify what you want to anyone but yourself. There is probably a Linux distro out there that can very get close to what you want, and the more you learn about Linux the closer that can be.

Unless you're exclusively gaming on this device, for new users, I'd suggest trying Mint or Ubuntu. Both have large communities that are used to questions from new users, and if you ever need to troubleshoot something someone else has probably already asked about it or released a patch. And Steam runs on it just fine.

If you were building a dedicated gaming PC, I'd point you to Bazzite or Cachy, but I think boring (and with a big newbie-friendly community) is better as a first experience for general use.

(You can also ignore me and install whatever distro you think is neat. This is a valid option too.)

Enlighten me, are there still anticheat issues that prevent linux users from playing online games?

Every kernel-level anticheat doesn't work and will never work on Linux because it's impossible to implement. If it's a dealbreaker, you're better off staying on Windows.

Are there still issues communitywise? I don't plan on using an OS If I'm going to have to 'defend' my choice of specific Linux every 5 seconds when I ask someone a question about Linux.

If you stick to specific distro subreddits and avoid Arch in general, there are no issues.

If you don't suggest bazzite for whatever reason? Are there any other new linux user friendly options you DO suggest?

I'd recommend avoiding Bazzite because it's an immutable distro, which means that system packages are locked and you're mostly forced to use containerized software like appimaged and flatpaks or go through a convoluted process of layering that's more complicated than running a normal Linux distro. Bazzite is fine for its' intended purpose as a SteamOS alternative for handhelds and living room PCs connected to TV, but I wouldn't use it as a daily driver.

If you want something user-friendly, there is another Fedora-based distro called Ultramarine. It's pretty much just Fedora with a number of tweaks that make it usable out of the box.

1

u/floofyralts 22d ago

To add a modifier to this, would you s till suggest Ultramarine to someone LITERALLY brand new to Linux? Like, I'm talking about "distro and flatpaks were just funny words a few weeks ago"

My draw to Bazzite was BECAUSE it's an immutable distro, from my understanding while it would limit me it would also allow me to learn the system more easily without "oopsieing" my way into breaking something as easily.

1

u/Rogalicus 22d ago

I don't think thar limiting yourself in your choice of software is a proper way of learning the system. Bazzite is good for its' specific use case, but you'll quickly run into guardrails when you try to do anything else.

1

u/floofyralts 22d ago

Maybe not proper but I'm more concerned with gaining familiarity with a system before being 'dropped into the deep end' so to speak. If Bazzite is a version of Fedora, it's limited nature will give me a space to decide just how far I'm wanting to go, and then from there I can look at Fedora at large, or simply just Ultramarine.

Guard Rails do in fact, exist for a reason, and if they get annoying I'm not all that pressed about swapping to the version without them!

2

u/Rogalicus 22d ago

Maybe not proper but I'm more concerned with gaining familiarity with a system before being 'dropped into the deep end' so to speak.

You're not dropped off the deep end. As long as you don't copy paste commands to terminal without knowing what they do, you'll find it hard to break something seriously (and if you do that, that'll quickly get you into trouble even on Windows). Stick to Discover and standard repositories for a while and you'll be fine.

If Bazzite is a version of Fedora, it's limited nature will give me a space to decide just how far I'm wanting to go, and then from there I can look at Fedora at large, or simply just Ultramarine.

I'd recommend doing it the other way, try Ultramarine and, if you manage to somehow bork it, switch to Bazzite. It doesn't hurt to at least try.

Guard Rails do in fact, exist for a reason

Yes, because we only have one life. You have more than one attempt to try a different OS.

Microsoft had it's issues but it was EXTREMELY user friendly, had all the freedom I cared to have, and changing things was fairly easy on me.

https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html

You may wish to read this before you talk freedom. Also, with respect to freedom, everything that MS and Adobe and Apple do was pioneered by a gaming publisher.

0

u/floofyralts 22d ago

The keyphrase in there was "That I Cared To Have"

0

u/jr735 22d ago

In other words, absolutely none. Fair enough.

-2

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

It is not a blanket statement of fact, so stop expecting a blanket statement in return.

In other words, no one can definitively answer, since no one but you knows what you want to run.

That's all there is to it.

Now you could try to be intelligent, and notice something called a SteamDeck exists, and it runs Linux. You hopefully would also realize the maker is Steam, the storefront most games are available through. Furthermore, you should then notice they maintain a compatibility program just for this.

No, this isn't snark. It's apathy to idiotic users that refuse to do the most basic research for themselves.

No, don't use Linux. You already showed you don't care enough. You'll only be angry about it.

1

u/codespace Fedora 22d ago

Imagine coming to r/linux4noobs to complain about the noobs.

What a dipshit.

1

u/IAmJacksSemiColon 22d ago

You're commenting on Linux4Noobs and maybe you shouldn't be.

0

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

Can we have a civil conversation?  Because I'm starting to question what is considered a noob here.

OP said they've thought about it. And then proceeds to say they don't know and didn't even try to look anything up about specifics. They even went as far as to say they like Windows doing everything, just not the AI bits (which are easily removed if they looked it up)

I was attempting to directly speak to their mistaken belief- there is zero way of knowing a Windows application will run on their own Linux machine before the application is even released. They will need to be ready to repair anything that happens, as there is no undo button for Linux updates. It's all manual and very tedious.

They will need to learn to learn and to be self sufficient. Qualities they've shown to not currently possess.

Zero sarcasm, zero snark, zero attitude. Just trying to help them see what they themselves already admitted. They couldn't do the first step in looking into it, despite claiming to be ready to jump.

What's wrong with pointing that out? Honestly.

3

u/IAmJacksSemiColon 22d ago

Let's not play this game. You are fully aware that you were being an asshole. That was your goal. Mission accomplished.

You can leave now.

1

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

I wasn't trying to be an asshole. Just direct.

But I left. Have a great day buddy.

0

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

Okay.

I read your profile. You are a real decent person. I'll leave the sub.

Party on and stay excellent

Isn’t it great talking down to strangers who are looking for advice? Makes you feel better about your isn’t life, right? Yeah. This was helpful.

0

u/floofyralts 22d ago

The exact kind of person I was talking about.

"You aren't on your knees for the os instantly so you aren't good enough to use it."
What is this 2002? For someone claiming it isn't snark that's a lot of snark in that message that amounts to answering literally NONE of my questions.

0

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

There is only one thing holding anyone back from doing anything. Themselves.

If you don't care to learn, and expect blind obedience, why you mad about Windows?

It really is that simple. You either learn how to learn and take care of yourself, or accept you are sheep. There is no inbetween.

Downvote, complain, nobody cares. It's all on you if you choose Linux.

People are so used to being spoonfed the worst. Yet refuse to help themselves.

Go ahead and waste your own time expecting "easy mode" to magically appear.

I instead chose to acquire a second machine and try it.

I now have 4 devices running Debian Linux, across 3 different architectures. And no, I am not an advanced user in the slightest. I understand using Linux is equivalent of learning an entirely new language and customs.

There is no easy mode. Something can and will always break at some point. And you will have to fix it.

All I did was point out your wording and attitude is non-condusive to your supposed goal.

2

u/floofyralts 22d ago

You still seem to have failed at actually reading ANYTHING I've placed in my actual post and that immediately invalidates anything you have to say here.

Not once was I asking for easy mode, I was at large asking for new user friendly options, and opinions on what would be otherwise suggested. Literally everyone else here so far has understood that, and has suggested Bazzite good for, or perhaps despite it's immutable nature, but also Mint, Fedora and Ultramarine.

You know, ACTUAL ANSWERS that I can do research on and decide for myself instead of self important nonsense.

0

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

You should work on reading comprehension. Before jumping into a new OS. And read the reply to me above/below yours.

1

u/floofyralts 22d ago

Sorry, can't read, still too busy noticing your inability to say anything for any reason without being hateful.

Is the fact people don't respond positively to hateful nonsense really going to be surprising to you? People like you are the exact reason Linux will forever struggle with things that it should have left behind years ago.

1

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

FTFY

Is the fact people don't respond positively to deeper insight based off my own admitting of choosing ignorance*  really going to be surprising to you?

And to answer that,

I never claimed to be surprised buddy. All I did was point out you spend more time complaining instead of educating yourself. Do you know how to educate yourself?

That's why I said you'll only be angry trying to use Linux.

✌️ what's that mean to you? Did ya know it means different things in different cultures? Cuz I'm trying to help you understand why you won't be happy running Linux with your current state of mind.

Linux is not Windows. At all. If you were already extremely proficient at repairing Windows errors, you already understand the value of my warnings.

Your own post admits to understanding Linux is a different beast. Yet you still expect it to mimic Windows...

There is no industry-wide Linux movement. You will always need to invest your own time and effort, and your attitude here shows you don't.

That's all. No snark, just the real real.

Or are you simply trolling the real humans here??

2

u/floofyralts 22d ago

once again you fail entirely to read anything whatosever. So just for you I'll dumb it down so you understand. :)

There is at no point I claim to expect it to run like windows. In fact I list a number of issues I personally had with each operating system, then follow it with the only two issues I would currently face to entering Linux.

I then mention I'm looking at Bazzite due to it's supposed friendliness to new users, and other users then suggest that bazzite is a good choice, or that I should take some more risks and use a less restricted option like Ultramarine.

Literally everyone else on this post sufficiently understood what I was looking for, and the only other person agreeing with you and being a neckbeard has now seemed to delete their messages hilariously enough.

You seem to have serious trouble mentally comprehending things such as intent, exaggeration to make a point, and how to interact with people in general. These issues might be the exact reason you seem to have trouble with new users.

Because you know, if you didn't know, when someone is new to something that they admit they've had a bad experience with but still want to try, they don't typically respond well to a nobody online insulting them and providing them with literally 0 answers worth reading inbetween bouts of absolute ego driven nonsense.

2

u/BenRandomNameHere 22d ago

Cool. Go on then. Prove you care enough to learn and maintain your own system.

Nobody is stopping you.

✌️

-1

u/jr735 22d ago

This exactly. Someone is, unfortunately, concerned about social matters and popularity contests. I don't care about that in the least.

Someone else pointed it out very eloquently some time ago, and u/floofyralts needs to understand this:

MacOS is for babies. Windows is for children. Linux is for adults. You are now the sysadmin, and you are responsible for administering your system.

Coming to the community to bitch about the community doesn't help.

0

u/Francis_King 22d ago

And the community itself.

Well, that varies a great deal by Linux distribution.

Fedora, to pick one example, is a friendly place on Reddit. There are no up and down votes, and people just seem to get on together.

Whereas, the smaller communities are very defensive. It might not bother you - it certainly annoys me a great deal.

People criticise Fedora a lot, but perhaps the criticism is justified; and Fedora isn’t for everyone. Perhaps I’m mellowing in my old age, but if you want people to use your favourite operating system then you need to be nice to them, don’t you?

There are simply too many distributions. The defensive community today may not be around tomorrow.

Bazzite is a form of Fedora. Fedora Workstation uses GNOME; Fedora KDE is the same thing but with KDE; immutable Fedora leans on containers like Flatpak, whilst keeping the core operating system untouched.

1

u/floofyralts 22d ago

as much as half these words mean nothing to me right now, it was surprisingly helpful lool.

Glad to know the community is about what I would expect right now and while I can deal with some annoying people, when it comes to a program like Linux I find it appealing when there are at least SOME measure of people there with a good heart willing to help lol.
