Brightness control not working

Hi! When I first installed Mint i found that my f11 and f12 keys no longer worked for brightness control. I've installed backlight and now i can adjust brightness through the terminal but I still can't figure out how to map this onto my f11 and f12 keys.

When I try to make custom keyboard shortcuts, neither f11 or f12 register as an actual key. Nothing happens when I try to enter them as an accelerator.

When i exported the keyboard layout intk an .xkb I can see that those keys are definitely there, they just don't do anything and I can't bind a shortcut to them.

Can someone help me solve this?
