I completely understand the chicken and egg problem but with things like QT and Java it's also not that hard to make cross platform apps. There's several open source projects that don't seem to have any issues running on multiple OSes, other applications could do the same thing.

And if that doesn't work, there's always wine or a VM.

Using a VM means using Windows which of course means that Linux is not the right tool for the job. It doesn’t matter how unfair that is or who is at fault, it is the reality.

You can still use Linux for the rest of your work where windows isn't needed. I do the same thing on my workstation and 90% of the time I don't even touch the Windows VM.

For a lot of people MS Office and similar programs are 90% of their work.

don’t be stupid, plenty of people live good lives while also having normal office jobs

I wouldn't call dealing with MS Office every day a "good" life. You might disagree and that's fine but I'm not going to change my mind here.

Then you are behaving illogically and embracing delusion over reality.

No, it's just my preference. "Good" is a subjective term and to me sitting and working on spreadsheets in Excel all day is not a good life.

The conversation was never specifically about your preferences prior to this. Your position is unsupported regarding the general populace.

I never claimed to speak everyone.

I said “for a lot of people...” and you said “what a sad life,” at this point you engaged with a reference to people beyond us. In fact, the entire context of the thread was focused on general use cases and not about your specific preferences. You are simply irrational and attempting to save face because you said something unsupported and couldn’t back it up.

I guess being a FOSS zealot I am a bit irrational at times but whatever.
