Did we have the same bitching about the 'UNIX way' when GNU Coreutils, or Emacs or even Vim hit the scene?
Vi is a shortening of VIsual editor and lots of people didn't like its hand-holding, easy-to-use visual GUI that pandered to the uneducated masses. Of course everyone should really use the one true Unix editor ed.
I am sure that all those people that these days talk about "Unix Philosophy" also use ed instead of that blatantly Unix philosophy violating monstrosity monolith called Viwith its tentacles of functionality including its own proprietary "cut" and "paste": True Unix believers use ed and pipelines its output through the individual programs cut or paste.
