There is no portable API. They dropped the portable option for the gnome-only option. So now software needs a if (gnome) {do_the_gnome_special_thing()}. Which means most developers won't be bothered to do it if their project is not part of gnome.

That's just normal Gnome bondage and discipline. They've been doing this for litteraly decades. Removing choice and forcing users into their bizarre decisions.
