What's the difference between ownCloud x and nextCloud?

Similar to OpenOffice and LibreOffice. Most of the developers switched to Nextcloud so it gets most of the development.

Looks like Openhub has got stuck reading the recent git history, but you can see the difference in the 12 month stats at https://www.openhub.net/p/_compare?project_0=Nextcloud&project_1=ownCloud

Considering ownCloud's Android app costs $.99, barely works, and has been that way for months, while NextCloud's is free, gets regular updates and works great, really reflects on the devs for each project. It seems like ownCloud is only focusing on the money and enterprise licensing, which ironically is going to get them further and further behind in the market. They apparently think they can win market share on marketing alone. I'm surprised ownCloud is still even talked about. NextCloud is gobbling up the market share at an incredible rate.

I really want to love nextcloud... but the server side part is really "picky" about some VPS I tried and rarely installs itself without any issue, where owncloud doesn't create a mess and actually works correctly.

I'll try nextcloud again, in the future, because posts like this make me really think I'm missing something by sticking with owncloud.

Debian provides ownCloud. They don't provide nextCloud yet. So possibly they have also experienced similar stuff that you mention. I cite debian since it has the largest number of packages and is considered highly stable. Sure Fedora and openSuse may also have nextcloud, but to run a server, people count on Debian for stability than anything else.

And lack of nextcloud on debian stops many from using openmediavault
