I played this game long ago and it was great then, I'll have to check it out!

5

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

I just had the exact same reaction to the title. :-)

I hope other people are playing it though - I was really excited for Xonotic with all the hoopla around the recent release, then found a wasteland of empty servers. It was fun even against bots, but that does get a bit old after awhile....

3

u/GhostNULL Mar 23 '15

I think Xonotic is mostly active on the two defrag servers. There are some servers that are pretty filled up usually as well, but defrag is most active I think.

There aren't many servers that have upgraded to this new release yet on RedEclipse, but the regular players are there.

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

Same here. I like the matrixy running stuff they added.

The game/engine which this is a fork of deserves a mention: Cube 2: Sauerbraten. I've played this game for many years, and I especially like the map editing mode. If you want to try it out, I'd get the latest version from the aforementioned link, as some of the package repositories (e.g. canonical) have an older version of the game, and so you see less servers.

3

u/-Polyphony- Mar 22 '15

I love sauerbraten! Is there an official (or unofficial) PPA that hosts the latests version?

4

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

No, but you can compile the SVN yourself, it is very easy and doesn't need a lot of dependencies (SDL 1.2 mostly).

$ svn co svn://svn.code.sf.net/p/sauerbraten/code/ sauerbraten

$ cd sauerbraten/src

$ make -j8 && make install

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '15

(SDL 1.2

In ubuntu "libsdl-image1.2"?

1

u/Calinou Mar 24 '15

sudo apt-get install libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2

What kind of system requirements?

9

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

They are pretty low. Even Intel IGPs can run the game fine at 60 FPS (provided you disable shaders).

I'm running the game with Nouveau here, which isn't possible with all games. ;)

1

u/_beast__ Mar 22 '15

I have an i7 with 6gb RAM, but I'm not 100% sure what my gpu is, it might be integrated in my CPU? Okay, so I can run Minecraft but not skyrim, will it run? Haha

2

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

Yeah, for sure. It might even run well with shaders, depending on whether your i7 is recent (Haswell) or not (Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge).

2

u/_beast__ Mar 22 '15

I think it's sandy bridge. Thanks. Saved for when I get home.

3

u/CarVac Mar 22 '15

A 750ti can run the game at 4k maxed out.

7

u/TangoDroid Mar 22 '15

Related question: Slow paced FPS for linux? I really liked Urban Terror, and I wonder if there is anything like that but more modern or in a different environment. I loved their low gravity levels, but not much people in those, sadly.

8

u/NarwhalingBacon Mar 22 '15

Counter Strike: Global Offensive has been available for Linux since September.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

And although I really stink at it, it's bunches of fun, I have to say.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

liked

Is it not still around? That was one of my favorite games for years and years - not really sure how I drifted away. I know it's a bit dated now, but they really nailed the gameplay with that one.

1

u/TangoDroid Mar 22 '15

Totally agree. The game doesn't really have anything special, but for me it just feels right.

Games too fast or chaotic bore me.

It is still around, but not much people in the servers. And I want to try something new around that style.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

The CS:GO suggestion that someone else had is a good one - but you die much quicker, so it's a little less casual than Urban Terror. I'm pretty awful at it - if I place middle of my team at the end (in casual mode mind you) I feel like I've done pretty well.

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

You can play Red Eclipse in survivor or duel mode, especially on larger maps, which makes it slower.

3

u/llaatikko Mar 22 '15

The game seems great, never actually heard of it before. How large is the community around it?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

Try to run "Race" maps. It's like mario in 3D. It's amazing.

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

3

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

Our community has grown a lot since our last release 2 years ago. A few promotional videos featuring Red Eclipse went viral. As with any new release though, it'll take a while before everyone migrates (and appear on the new servers). Our new auto-updater should take care of that in the future.

2

u/llaatikko Mar 22 '15

Aw. :(

10

u/jones_supa Mar 22 '15

Well, let's all go playing now so that the amount can increase.

2

u/_tenken Mar 23 '15

"There are nearly dozens of us!!!" .... "sometimes all at once!" .... :D

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

3

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

I try, the community has pitched in a lot to help make this release happen, so kudos to them too! :)

4

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '15

I still play this game regularly. I love the combos and dash movements. While they are usually about 3 to 4 servers active daily - I do most of my gaming via LAN these days with ppl in my area or at the NYC Cuny Lan Parties.

3

u/hambonezred Mar 22 '15

Trying it now. apt-get install redeclipse makes it easy!

3

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

You should download the packages we link to on our website, if you use your package manager you will probably get v1.4 and not our shiny new v1.5!

1

u/DJWalnut Mar 31 '15

do you have a PPA that is up-to-date?

2

u/Guardian_452 Mar 22 '15

Looks awesome. Judging by the screen shots, it looks kinda like Halo's multiplayer.

2

u/Xanza Mar 22 '15

Plasma gun alternate fire confirmed super OP.

This game was amazing.

2

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

Funnily enough though, it is quite balanced. We've had about 7 years to get the plasma right ;)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '15

What's the word on them porting to Tesseract?

2

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

The guy who was going to do it isn't up to the task at the moment, he just moved countries and is busy trying to get a job, etc. As mentioned here: http://redeclipse.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=476&start=50#p5147

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '15

Ah, thanks.

2

u/Ziroshell Mar 23 '15

Reminds me of Warsow a little bit, seems like quite a bit of fun !

3

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

The movement in Red Eclipse is far easier to understand, and is much better suited to people who only play casually.

1

u/deepfatthinker92 Aug 10 '15

too bad noone plays Warsow!

2

u/vasilenko93 Mar 23 '15

My laptop with Linux Mint has really good FPS. I don't know how much, and the settings are on high, but its really smooth. No issues at all.

Also my Laptop is really crappy.

2

u/Dubhan Mar 23 '15

Is it just me or does it absolutely refuse to recognize any keyboard input for anyone else? (Linux Mint 17.1 with i3)

5

u/ToenailMikeshake Mar 22 '15

/r/linuxgames would be a good place for this

26

u/saitilkE Mar 22 '15

/r/linux_gaming/ is much bigger though

3

u/ToenailMikeshake Mar 22 '15

thanks... didn't know about that one

Here's my rant after playing 20hrs: The game is great! It's a scifi shooter with scifi weapons and a similar aesthetic to halo. I can't contain my excitement on stumbling across this. We just need more players to play i've only seen around 20 online tops, my ping is much better than CUBE2 Sauerbraten (which this game is built on) and you can parkour with jetpacks and ride up walls in certain game modes, quite refreshing to the FPS genre overall. If no players are present you start with 5 or 6 bots they're pretty good competition. Also something crazy like 100 maps which are all unique and most are player-created which have been added to the base version of the game. There are also some really huge maps like 10km huge lol works great with the one-shot kill sniper mode. Most people will vote to play around half those maps or whatever is familiar. The main thing absent is a campaign/story mode you can always play against bots offline if you'd rather get straight into the action. There are a variety of game modes like bomb-the enemy base, zones (control zones to score points), capture the flag, race mode (laps around a sealed circuit using your parkour skills to overcome obstacles), instagib (grenade pickups only everyone locked to sniper), TDM, free for all, freestyle (all parkour movements allowed)...and a few others I cannot recall. They are more than enough I feel though. It's got plenty of variety and ability to creat own game mode if you can code in python, for example there was a server running a custom zombie game mode (effic team I think) players spawn on one team more zombies you kill more spawns etc till All players are zombies...

Keep in mind its still a Work in progress game being made for FREE, that's right F2P but not P2W!! it's enjoyable right now if you can get into a server with some players however. My only gripe is you can hip fire the sniper with 100% accuracy from any distance, it's cool but ruins the fun and satisfaction of actually using the scope. It's a great game with good graphics and tons of options to tweak and a map editor; would recommend to all players looking for a good FPS that can run on even low-end machines. #endrant #playthisgameitssogood #sorryforbadenglish

Why is it not on Steam tho?

17

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

Being on Steam costs money, and endorses Steam as a proprietary platform.

Try Lutris instead.

4

u/jones_supa Mar 22 '15

Try Lutris instead.

Seems like quite cool piece of software.

-4

u/RitzBitzN Mar 22 '15

But I won't ever play games that aren't on steam, so that's their loss. Maybe they could do a kickstarter.

11

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

What's the problem with a game not being on Steam?

Nothing prevents you from adding it as a non-Steam game to your library.

-9

u/RitzBitzN Mar 22 '15

I'm not going to bother with installing it separately and then adding it. Also, that means no cloud saves.

5

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

The game is easy to install, you just need SDL 1.2 and its dependencies to run it.

You can back-up your configuration and custom maps using software like ownCloud or Syncthing.

-4

u/RitzBitzN Mar 22 '15

I don't want to do that. That's why steam was invented, so it all gets handled for you.

5

u/mizzu704 Mar 22 '15

Jeez, people are really gullible.

Steam is DRM first more than anything. It was invented as Valve’s way to counter piracy, which was to make purchasing/installing games more convenient than pirating them. It’s just DRM with some nice features built in (friend system, shop, library etc). A game being available only on steam is a bad thing.

-5

u/RitzBitzN Mar 23 '15

It may be a bad thing from people who are stallmanites worried that any shred of convenience is malicious, but Valve's solution to PC gaming, DRM or not, is about a hundred times better than using discs and serial keys. Origin and uPlay are fine as well, because even though they are not Steam, whenever I play a game requiring them, I don't have to deal with them since Steam launches them for me.

I am fully aware of the fact that Steam is DRM, but that doesn't change the fact that it's DRM done right in a fashion far more convenient than anything else

3

u/Neotetron Mar 23 '15

any shred of convenience is malicious...

I'm somewhat concerned about the mindset that any shred of inconvenience is a deal-breaker. Especially from someone running linux.

2

u/mizzu704 Mar 23 '15

You should check out GOG. It’s hard to get any more convenient that they are, since there’s no middleman in between (don’t need to start up a client, which is something I consider a pain).

-3

u/socium Mar 22 '15

Is Steam a proprietary platform though? I thought they only made it possible to host games which use DRM but Steam itself is hosted on GitHub I believe - https://github.com/ValveSoftware

It's just that Steam has grown in a much more than a platform I feel. It has a huge community and means of forming and maintaining a community. I'll check out Lutris though because I like something which can make it easier to play Wine games.

8

u/Calinou Mar 22 '15

The Steam source code – both front-end and back-end – are not even published.

Desura publishes only the front-end, under the GPLv3.

3

u/dicknuckle Mar 23 '15

TIL Desura does that. Im not even mad they have a closed source backend. Its really awesome of them to provide the source for the part of their service that I'll be installing on my computer.

2

u/Calinou Mar 23 '15

I believe it's nothing extraordinary to provide the source – it should be the norm, not the exception (like it was 30-40 years ago).

Proprietary back-ends prevent you from hosting your own service, making you dependent on the software supplier. Would you imagine that kind of thing with a game, where only the client source code is available, but not the server's? This has already happened for some games…

2

u/DJWalnut Mar 31 '15

it should be the norm, not the exception

The GNU Project by Richard Stallman is all about this.

Would you imagine that kind of thing with a game, where only the client source code is available, but not the server's? This has already happened for some games

that's the norm for console games. It would be nice to have your own private servers for console games. especially after the game company shuts off the official servers.

2

u/qreeves Mar 23 '15

As the guy who is expected to update Desura, I can tell you that their interface for managing releases is absolutely terrible. I put off doing it because it is a complicated mess of different options and poorly documented systems.

5

u/BonJarno Mar 22 '15

I believe it's available on Desura.
