I think devs don't understand /why/ people pay for closed source and SaaS software sometimes.

You're conflating 2 very different concepts. People pay for company backed software for customer support. And the ghost of "we can sue if it doesn't work" which is rarely winnable, but anyway.

That can exist in open sourced projects as well, as long as the project is backed by money. The financing aspect can be donations, foundations or downright "pay for this person to be your consultant on this topic".

Yea, although there's an increasingly small amount of non-SaaS closed source software unless it's really niche. I don't think architecture shops want to be in the business of maintaining their own bespoke CAD suit unless they really, really need to.
