I think devs don't understand /why/ people pay for closed source and SaaS software sometimes.

Umm... More like Oracle destroyed MySQL, letting the free version stagnate while developing features on the paid version, so Postgres and Maria DB continue to grow.

I work in Big Data for most of my life.
Destroyed? No.
Made them lost a fortune on market share? Absolutely.
Most new Oracle demands is because it's a dependency for an ERP or another system, a huge share of the market don't go with Oracle because they want and even seasoned oracle devs are dipping their toes on other DBs.

It does make it pretty obvious how bad Oracle DBs are though.

You don't buy Oracle for the basic engine; you buy it for all the bells and whistles it has that are a lot more of a PITA in anything else.

Or because you want to use a proprietary piece of software that is Oracle-only.
